I just noticed the way Kate leans into him as he’s walking towards her

There’s something so special about Kate, who tries not to lean on anyone at all if she can help it because she doesn’t want to be burden, physically leaning towards Anthony before he’s even all the way there for her to actually rest against him.

It’s an expression of belief and trust and love and it’s so important to me that Kate finally knows that she is so completely loved that she can lean on him unconditionally

the beautiful thing about derry girls is how it made me feel. i laughed of course, it's a comedy. but i cried with them, i loved with them, i got pissed with them, i rolled my eyes at jenny joyce with them. i just felt so involved in their lives, so protective over them, as if they were my friends. it all felt so real, and the fact that a show made me so engaged with only nineteen episodes speaks volumes.

I feel like I'm seeing only one interpretation of "Who We Are" and the iconic line "To hold me like water/Or Christ, hold me like a knife" and as someone who has done martial arts and knife work, as well as an English major, I'd like to throw in my two cents.

So what I've seen are the metaphorical interpretations (mostly on TikTok too) where they compare water to life/sustenance and a knife to death/injury to the narrator, and so the narrator wants to be held like something life-saving or, in a desperation to be held at all, held like they're something dangerous.

I think the opposite.

From a martial arts perspective, if you're the one holding the knife, you're not a danger to yourself. Obviously, if a weapon is involved at all there is a level of danger, but it is way more difficult for the person/thing on the other end. They have to be concerned about near 360-degree mobility of the wrist and the ability to change hands quickly, so targeting the hand holding the knife becomes trying to completely isolate it from the other side of the body while also preventing the wrist from rotating. I'd much prefer to be the one holding the knife.

Meanwhile, there are other lines in the song to suggest that the knife is more valuable than water.

The opening lines are:

You only feel it when it's lost Gettin' through still has a cost Quietly, it slips through your fingers, love Falling from you drop by drop

This is what it sounds like when you're trying to hold water. No matter how tightly you cup your hands, it will find cracks and spill through. And you'll feel it when it's lost; your empty hands will be wet.

Now look at the chorus:

We're born at night So much of our lives Is just carving through the dark To get so far

The knife is being used to carve through the dark. It is vital, a means of survival.

And also, just think of how your hands are when you hold something like water versus something like a knife.

One is loose and gentle, open. The other is gripped, tightly. If I were touch-starved, I wouldn't want a gentle hand to cup my face, I'd want someone to hold me in a vice as if doing so would mean they are protected from danger, ready to face the darkness.

This is the circle of anger, after all.

my problem with slb's filmography is that he romanticizes events so much that his movies/shows don't have the desired impact on the people. in padmavaat he glorified jauhar to the point that people started defending it and even sati. in gangubai, he made everything so grand that people forgot that the lady herself wasn't an all around good person. now, he's done the same thing with heeramandi. like i genuinely saw someone say that they wanted to live a life like in the show where they have 5 attendants to lift their skirt for them and whatnot. the people are so enchanted with the clothes/sets/etc that they have failed to grasp the main premise of the show. they fail to realise that the women he has shown had to go through innumerable brutalities and were just glorified mistresses with no power of their own. and living their life isn't gonna be fun and aesthetic.

you know what i think about a lot? i think a lot about the romanticization of henry winter from tsh on social media platforms and how the creators of these posts are charmed, much like richard papen, into the idea of a stoic, tall, handsome academic who fits their ideal definition of the "dark academic" aesthetic. richard describes henry in a romanticized way BECAUSE he is enamoured by him and i've seen such few tsh fans who have recognized that papen is an unreliable narrator. just goes to show how convincing donna tartt's writing is 😭

TSH spoilers:

I feel like we as a fandom do not talk about Henry’s symbolism in TSH enough. Like, that dude is the literal embodiment of death, and I just think it’s so damn cool. I mean, his whole obsession with language and literature stemmed from the fact that he almost died in a car accident. And then every death we see in the book (the farmer’s, Bunny’s, and his very own) is directly at his hands. The others were accomplices, sure, but Henry’s the one who takes action every time. And in Francis’s failed suicide and Richard’s near death in the epilogue, they both see Henry, not Bunny or Charles or what have you.

Henry is not only obsessed with death, he IS death. He’s the reaper who’s friends toy with their mortality all the time through drugs and booze. The reason they all admire him is not only because of his size and stature and brilliance; it’s because he’s dangerous. If beauty is indeed terror, than he’s the most beautiful of them all. They all have the life preservation skills of a fly, so of course they love Henry. And of course his actions constantly bring them closer to danger and death.
