Why did Tyrus break up for four month and how did they get back together?

so freshman year happens. Cyrus is going to UPenn and TJ goes to the University of Maryland. they’re closeby, only a little over a 2 hour drive, but freshman arent allowed to have a car on campus. luckily, one of TJ’s upperclassman friends lets him borrow it to go see Cyrus

Cyrus has a crappy freshman year and TJ has an amazing freshman year. and everytime TJ comes to visit he seems so happy and doing so well that Cyrus just wants to focus on that

bc the fact of the matter is, for the first time in his life, he’s somewhere without a best friend. and he feels SO alone. he was pretty good at making friends, he always was, but theres a depth that he’s missing. none of these people are buffy or andi or jonah. and that takes a toll because he’s always been with at least one of them.

and if that weren’t already bad enough, Cyrus’s first semester he takes intro to psych and even though he does well, he hates his teacher. he hates his class. and he hates this school. and the whole time he’s so stressed bc of the stupid prophecy from his barmitzvah that he’s gonna fail out that he kind of goes overboard. he declares a film major bc maybe, just maybe the prophecy could’ve been referring to him making a major motion picture and that’s why he’ll leave, so he sets himself up for that

The harder he works, the more he tells TJ not to visit, and the more TJ gets frustrated. but they make it through freshman year, though its a little rocky, and they only see each other in person like once a month at most

now its the summer. they’re all back in shadyside. things are weird all around. buffy and marty have now been broken up for a year and they’re kind of like okay, but marty just started dating a new girl and buffy’s trying to pretend it doesn’t bother her but it definitely does. and by comparison, andi and amber have been dating for a year now and are in the honeymoon phase still and a bit excruciating to be around. jonah feels a little awkward, TJ is very aware of the difference in lovedoveyness between his and cyrus’s relationship and andi & amber’s

Cyrus gets this unpaid internship at the local news station and it works him to the bone. insane hours and everything. TJ works too, at Jackson St Gym. but things get a little better regardless.

that is, until the weeks leading up to them returning for sophomore year. cyrus gets overly anxious and it starts to drive TJ insane

sophomore year begins and TJ comes to visit. he gets there and cyrus barely pays attention to him, focusing on his film project.

TJ loses his temper and confronts him about “not even really liking filmmaking anyways” and cyrus is like “how can you say that? i need to make it big so i can leave UPenn instead of getting kicked out” and TJ’s like “cyrus you arent gonna get kicked out! is this really all about the fortune teller at your barmitzvah??” and hes like “YOU’RE the one that believed her first, buffy told me!” and TJ was like “we were kids cyrus and i asked her a yes or no question, c’mon.” and cyrus is like “im not taking any chances. buffy’s came true too”

and TJ snaps and hes like “well then why did you even COME to this school” and cyrus is like “bc theres a chance it’ll give me the tools i need to leave halfway and be a great filmmaker!” and TJ’s like “CYRUS no it wont! because you arent meant to be a filmmaker, we both know you dont love it as much as you pretend to!” and cyrus is like “well SORRY you and buffy and andi all know exactly what you want to do and always have! some of us aren’t so lucky!”

and TJ’s like “cyrus you DO know what you wanna do. you wanna do psychology! you have wanted to do it ever since i’ve known you” and cyrus gets FURIOUS and hes like “oh NOW you want me to do psychology!? you always told me it was bad, that i got too involved in other peoples problems!” and TJ’s like “but if you studied it you could learn how to balance that stuff! helping people isn’t a problem cyrus, its just that you focus too much on other people and not enough on yourself!” and cyrus, tears roaring in his eyes snaps “well maybe i’ll start then!“

and TJ’s like “good! you should start by transferring to a different school you clearly hate it here!” and cyrus is like “see. you DO believe the fortune teller. you do think im not meant to graduate!” and TJ’s like “i dont give a FUCK about the fortune teller. whether shes right or not, you arent happy here! you gotta go!” and cyrus is like *long pause* “no, i think you should go”

and TJ’s like “what d’you mean i should– CYRUS i just drove two hours to come here and see you! in fact i always come to see you! you never come visit ME” and cyrus is like “its not my fault im afraid of driving on highways!!” and TJ’s like “cyrus ive gone with you! you always do a good job!” and cyrus is like “yeah but i cant do it alone” and TJ’s like “yes you do, you just have to practice!”

and suddenly cyrus looks at him, and theres a long, long, LONG pause. and then finally he goes “okay.” and TJ’s like “…okay?” and cyrus is like “okay. in the past five minutes you have told me to focus on myself and that i need practice being alone. and i think you’re right.” and TJ’s just looking at him bc suddenly cyrus’s tone is making him nervous. and cyrus continues “i’ve spent most of my life trying to keep relationships together. but i’ve seen that time apart is actually the right thing sometimes. my parents needed to get divorced and they’re so much happier now. andi had to leave us back in highschool and she was better off for it because she got to follow her dreams. marty and buffy broke up and i thought that was the end of the world but they’re both doing good.” and TJ’s like “…so?” and cyrus is like “so maybe you’re right, and instead of focusing on keeping everyone else together, i should focus on keeping myself together.”

and TJ laughs and is like “lmao it kinda sounds like you’re breaking up with me.” but cyrus doesn’t laugh, he just looks at him. and TJ stops laughing, and stares back, shellshocked, and stammers “are you breaking up with me?” and cyrus is like *flustered* “no no no, im just more thinking maybe we shouldn’t be in a romantic relationship anymore.” and tjs like “. cyrus. thats what breaking up means” and they stare at each other and tj can feel his face getting redder and redder and cyrus is like “please dont be mad” and goes to comfort him, and apologize, and explain, but tj just holds up a hand, his whole body shaking and cyrus stops and starts to cry and TJ turns away from him because he cant look at cyrus crying rn and theres a pause of like FIVE MINUTES with just the sound of Cyrus’s sniffles and finally TJ’s like “you’re really breaking up with me.” and cyrus cant even say it again so he just nods, tears spilling down his face. and TJ’s like “what did i do.” and cyrus sobs “you didnt do anything, TJ, i just cant be with you rn.” and TJ’s like “but. but i need you.” and its like hes speaking through a tunnel as he continues “i literally dont know who i am without you.” and cyrus is like “then this is probably good for you, too.” and tj’s like “no its not. no its not.” and cyrus just goes “yes it is. you’ll see.”

and tj just stares at him and he’s about to speak but just then cyrus’s roommate walks in and hes like “oh fuck sorry dude i forgot your boyfriend was coming–” and then realizes that cyrus is crying and TJ is standing there like he’s been shot and hes like “uh. is everything, uh– look, i just need to grab my backpack and ill go–” and tj’s like, lips barely moving, “no dude, im leaving rn anyways” and cyrus WHIMPERS and is like “Teej i didn’t mean you had to go right this second– we should talk more–” and TJ’s like “no no, you told me to go. im going,” and he BOOKS it out the dorm

Cyrus dissolves into tears on his bed. his roommate has no idea what the fuck to do so hes like “uhh… *pat**pat*”

TJ runs outside and punches a tree

Cyrus calls Buffy. While they’re on the phone, Buffy gets another call– from TJ. she ignores it bc shes ACTIVELY on the phone w cyrus and shes not gonna hang up while her best friend is scream-sobbing into her ear

Since Buffy doesn’t pick up, TJ calls his mom. he doesn’t know how or why, he just does. She picks up and is like “hi hon! :) you with cyrus rn?” and he goes “hey mom.” and his voice sounds cracked and desperate and shes immediately like “what’s wrong?” and he opens his mouth to say “cyrus broke up with me” but he cant say it bc instead he sobs. he just sobs and sobs and says nothing and his mom lets him cry

a week goes by. Cyrus calls TJ. they talk for an hour, hang up, and then don’t talk for another week. a month goes by. Cyrus and TJ talk every once in a while. it sucks.

a guy at TJ’s school hears he’s single now and asks him out. TJ says the harshest “no” he’s ever uttered.

a guy at Cyrus’s school hears he’s single and kisses him at a party. Cyrus kisses him back but later cries in the bathroom.

2 months go by. Cyrus decides to transfer to Swarthmore, who originally accepted him back in HS.

he reaches out to TJ again. this time, they talk for two hours. “feeling more focused on yourself?” TJ asks. “Yeah,” Cyrus says, “Still not a bully, even without me?” “Yeah,” TJ says, “still good so far.” “Told you,” Cyrus says, smiling, glad TJ can’t see the tears running down his face. Cyrus doesn’t mention the transfer thing. TJ doesn’t mention that he misses Cyrus with every cell in his body.

And then, 2 months later, TJ’s walking back to his dorm from the gym, and hes crossing the street right by a bunch of cops– seems there was a small fender bender

TJ almost just walks straight by when he hears a familiar voice anxiously explaining “im so sorry officer the roads are so icy and i was so tense and well i had just come off the highway where i had gotten pulled over by one of your colleagues for driving too slowly so i was trying to heed his warning and drive faster but i guess i forgot to slow down in the residential neighborhood–”

and TJ’s like “….CYRUS?” and cyrus turns from the officer and is like “TJ! Thank god.“ and TJ’s like “what the hell are you doing here?” and cyrus is like “i borrowed my friend’s car” and TJ’s like “you drove here? you drove on the highway alone?” and cyrus goes “i had to.” and TJ’s like “why” and then cyrus goes “im transferring to swarthmore.” and TJ stares at him and he continues “you were right. i wasn’t happy at upenn. swarthmore is small and so its easier to make friends and its still close it’s only 2 and a half hours away from here and– and you’re right i like film but i dont LOVE film.” he takes a shaky breath and then says “but i do love you.” and TJ’s like “what” and cyrus is like “i love you. i had to temporarily end our romantic relationship but i never stopped loving you.”

and TJ goes “are you serious” and Cyrus goes “i understand if you’re too mad. i understand if you stopped loving me and fell for someone new because, well, you’re the most attractive college sophomore in the entire world, but–” and TJ goes “cyrus shut up” and cyrus is like “what” and TJ’s like “you’re so annoying, you’re just– you’re so annoying–” and then grabs him and kisses him.

the officer is like *clears throat* “okay boys that was beautiful and everything but mr. goodman here did do $300 worth of property damage to this parked car.” and tj’s like “bill me” and the officers like “no this is deadass just a fender bender. leave a note on the windshield and figure it out with the car ower lmao” and tj’s like “then why are you even here” and the officer’s like *roll eyes* “the kid called the cops on himself.”

TJ’s like *smirk* “yup sounds about right.” and the cops are like aight peace and they leave. and TJ hands cyrus a piece of paper to put down his info, and then they walk off hand in hand to his dorm. they have 4 months of stuff to catch up on, after all
