Astarion copes with his trauma by being selfish and callous about everyone else. No one looked out for him when he was suffering and he was actively pitted against the other spawn surviving the same hell, to compete with them for the reward of being tortured a bit less, so he thinks the only way to survive is to anticipate everyone else looking out for number one and beating them to the punch.

Wyll copes with his trauma by never thinking of himself once and defining his worth by being of service to others, fully in risk of losing himself into the role of the Blade and accepting the hurt so others don't have to. He wants to be free of Mizora's pact but not from the Blade protecting the sword coast, who he states is his "best self" and feels guilt over not living up to the ideal. He has no healthy boundaries when it comes to his heroism and keeps thinking he's not doing enough.

Wyllstarion is therefore a dynamic where you might think they'd be too different to work out. But Wyll's ability to not lose hope, nurture relationships and be ride-or-die loyal to his partner results in Astarion being gently exposed to how people respond to kindness with kindness and trust in not being betrayed. In turn Astarion would insist on Wyll thinking of himself and nurturing a healthy amount of selfishness and boundaries (and also being ride-or-die by the end of the game), resulting in a surprisingly balanced relationship that could be good for both of them.
