Cultural Cuisine: Five Flavor Soup
Tumblr media
Considering the prevalence of Chinese culture in Avatar, I get the feeling that the Southern Water Tribe’s “Five Flavor Soup” might be a reference to five-spice. Five-spice powder (五香粉) refers to a spice mixture used in most branches of Chinese cuisine. The five spices commonly used are:
Star anise (八角 / bājiǎo)
Cloves (丁香 / dīngxiāng)
Chinese cinnamon (肉桂 / ròuguì)
Sichuan pepper (花椒 / huājiāo)
Fennel seeds (小茴香 / xiǎohuíxiāng)
The flavors represented are sweet, bitter, sour, salty, and savory. Since I don’t know what else is in five flavor soup, I’ll just post a recipe to a five-spice soup here.
Like what I’m doing? Tips always appreciated, never expected. ^_^

A brief Avatar moment I always rather liked was Toph's off-hand mention of the "Dragon of the West" during the Fire Nation's drill attack on Ba Sing Se. Obviously, she met Iroh earlier in the show, and it's entirely possible that she pieced together who he was. In the encounter she had with Zuko along with the rest of the gang, she could sense that it was Iroh who had been struck by Azula. And since her friends had likely told her that Zuko was the son of the Fire Lord, it was only a matter of time before she put two and two together.
But aside from that, it was always interesting to me that she continued to regard him highly after such a revelation. After all, as one of the upper crust (pun intended) of Earth kingdom society, she'd have likely heard all about this man. The one Fire Nation warrior who managed the seemingly impossible task of breaching the walls of their nation's capital. Few others would have been as notorious as Iroh, yet despite this, Toph continued to think positively of him. I guess it was just a testament to how much of an insight into people's natures she had 😊

this is my favorite "iroh interacts with the gaang" moment in the whole show. because he isn't kind, or encouraging, or imparting gentle wisdom. he literally just snaps at her, even though he doesn't even know her. except.... he does know her. because he's spent the past three years on that fucking ship, and he can immediately recognize that she and zuko are kindred spirits. doesn't even know her name but he can sense her Incorrigible Nephew vibes from just a single look and he's already fed up with her.

“Hello. Zuko here. But I guess you probably already know me. Sort of... Uh so, the thing is... I have a lot of Firebending experience, and I’m considered to be pretty good at it. Well, you’ve seen me, you, know, when I was attacking your. Uh, yeah, I guess I should apologize for that. Bu-But anyway, I’m good now. I mean, I thought I was good before, but now I realize I was bad. But anyway... I think it’s time I joined your group and taught the Avatar Firebending.”

“Excuse me. The Boulder is confused. Isn’t the point to invade *during* the eclipse, when the Firebenders are powerless?” | “The eclipse only lasts for eight minutes. Not enough time for the whole invasion. And the Royal Palace is heavily guarded by Firebenders. So that’s where we’ll need the eclipse advantage the most. When this is finished, the Avatar will have defeated the Fire Lord. We will have control of the Fire Nation capitol, and this war... will be over!”
