Weekly Bookish Question #148 (September 29th - October 5th):
When reading a book that you’re really enjoying (and have maybe been looking forward to reading, even), are you the type to take it slow and take in every detail or the type to devour it quickly?

the great thing about loving minor characters is that nobody can tell me that something ISN’T true… cuz like… says who? the creators? no. in fact, the creators said nothing.

Greatly enjoying Netflix’s Wu Assassins!  The fight scenes are getting a lot of justified attention, but I really want to see an in depth discussion of the ways the characters switched between English and Cantonese and how those decisions were made.
Oh, and there is a multi-layered bad guy who wears *amazing* suits.

The story of Cats is that in the 1930s, the famous poet T.S. Eliot wrote a book of cutesy little cat-themed poems for his godchildren
And then 40 years later, Andrew Lloyd Webber found a lost cat poem that T.S. Eliot had cut from the cat book for being too sad for children, and ALW was like "woahhh. A cat....that's sad. That's deep, man. I wanna make a musical out of this"
So the producer assigned to the project was like "okay, I guess you could maybe read these cat poems as a satire of 1930s British society? We could probably do something sort of interesting with that, I'm thinking a cast of about 5 and--"
And ALW was like "no. Forget the satire. Also I want a cast of dozens and the most advanced special effects technology ever seen on stage. I've taken out a second mortgage on my house to fund this"
And the producer was like "wh-- you-- wh-- do you even have. a plot"
So ALW got a bunch of actors and writers and artists together and they holed up and did cocaine workshopped for 5 weeks, and at the end of it they emerged and said "the plot is that a bunch of cats are having a dance contest for the right to take a ufo to cat heaven :)"
and then it made 2 billion dollars.

So for some inexplicable reason, I never read any Mercedes Lackey growing up aside from one short story in the enchanting “Horse Fantastic” anthology.  I suspect I missed my window for this author, but have been feeling as though I should have read more of her work.  Anyone want to point me at a good one to try out?

you’ve gotta stat romanticizing your life. you gotta start believing that your morning commute is cute and fun, that every cup of coffee is the best you’ve ever had, that even the smallest and most mundane things are exciting and new. you have to, because that’s when you start truly living. that’s when you look forward to every day.

Pet peeve when I see people describing/reviewing Six of Crows: when people describe Matthias “giving up his religion” as a part of his character arc. Like, I am the biggest proponent of everyone’s-entitled-to-their-own-interpretation, but in this case, that’s just not true. Matthias is still very firm on his beliefs in Djel and the moral system and spiritually surrounding the religion he grew up with, he just becomes disillusioned with the organized/structural component of it. Like Matthias realizes Brum and other druskelle want to exploit Grisha, so they incorporate fear tactics in their religious teachings to promote their agenda. This is the element that Matthias abandons in the first book, not his religion entirely.

In the Netherlands, abortion is legal. There is however one pro life organization called Stichting Schreeuw Om Leven. But instead of harrassing women who are on their way to the abortion clinic and make them feel miserable, they offer them HELP.
If a woman wants to get an abortion because she is financially unable to give birth to and raise a baby, the organization will pay for everything she needs during the pregnancy and after, until she’s financially stable to raise the baby on her own.
This organization won’t stop women from going to the abortion clinic, but would rather hve a healthy conversation with them. Ask them if they can help her with anything in order for them to keep the baby. They also hand out contraception in the streets for those who can’t afford it.
Women don’t get abortions just because they want to. There are reasons why. This organization doesn’t fight abortion, it fights the reasons why women get abortions. Take notes America.
