He did have a point. Granted, a very sad one, but with all that had occurred, it was a wonder most humans were not running out of the city. “I’m surprised most of us are still here.” She pointed out, free hand vaguely gesturing at the people around them. Not that she could assume most of them were humans, but by the look in their eyes, most of them were traumatized by whatever they saw. She was lucky enough to not have seen much and yet, that had all been enough. “You know, I thought the most traumatizing thing that could happen to me was my ex-husband, but boy was I wrong,” She let out a dry chuckle. “I’ll be fine, as usual. How are you? –And your kid?”
Tumblr media
Vincent couldn’t disagree. It was a wonder that new humans arrived to town every day. Granted, the city had been relatively safe for some time now, so it was as if he didn’t get the appeal, but after the recent occurrences, he was surprised that more weren’t running for the border. It would be so easy to simply migrate somewhere else, to forget everything that had happened, and to never look back. “We’re resilient,” he answered simply. What else did have humans have when stacked against supernatural beings with actual powers? And yet, somehow, the species continued to perpetuate itself. He could only attribute that to a certain tenacious desire to survive. “We’re okay.” Thankfully, he thought to himself. Though he worried about his daughter. She’d already experienced more than a child her age should have had to. “It could’ve been so much worse, I guess, and that’s enough to be thankful about.”

“Vincent Choi,” Meena greeted back with a tilt of her head in acknowledgement of her fellow leader. “To what do I owe this pleasure?” She asked, cocking her head ever so slightly to the side as she pushed the towering pile of a papers she had been sifting her way through to the side of her desk. A coy smile finding its way to her lips in place of the wary one she had been only moments before carrying. To say Meena was exhausted was an understatement to say the least. The work only piling higher and higher up with each new complaint Town Hall received and there was still the matter at hand of determining exactly who all they had lost during Halloween and which previously departed civilians were back permanently. Neither of which were the easiest of feats, but at least it was a fellow Council member coming to check in on her rather than yet another disgruntled civilian. “And that is quite an eloquent way of saying I look tired now, isn’t it?” She couldn’t help, but let out a light laugh at the thought. “But, you’re also not wrong. So, what were we thinking? We want to escape these hollow halls for the evening or hide out here and finish off one of the many bottles I keep tucked away in my desk?”
Tumblr media
Vincent realized his misstep almost as soon as the words left his mouth. “I didn’t mean any offense,” he hedged. Politics were a game in subterfuge and riddles, and he struggled to learn the rules. “I thought I’d check in on you, see how you’re faring all things considered.” A half truth, but the truth nonetheless. Even someone who  was usually guileless as Vincent was could have ulterior motives every now and then. Not that there was any malice to his motives. He simply wanted to get a feel for the other leaders, to reassure himself that he wasn’t the only one who was at their wits ends. “I’m happy to tap into the supplies you keep in your office,” he answered, “but if you’re in need of some fresh air, I’m equally as happy to accompany.”

Life had returned to normal. Or as normal as life could be. Forrest couldn’t remember a single day of his life that could truly qualify as normal in any sense of the word -- he was a vampire and before that, he’d been a witch. Neither of those things were normal, but they’d been his normal. Then, Halloween had happened and life had upended. Days had passed and Forrest was still seeing images of his twin laying on the floor the life bleeding out of her, and everything in his was fighting the temptation to imagine what Poppy must’ve felt after he’d changed, the connection they’d had for the entirety of their lives snapping like a flimsy piece of string.
Forrest had hoped that his job would take his mind off of things, and for the most part, it had. He’d just wrapped with a client and had drifted to the front of the gym to grab a bottle of water when he heard the familiar voice. “Rohan,” he greeted. He was sure there was a bit of skepticism in his voice, and surprise. Forrest was definitely surprised. “If you’re looking to sign up, I can take you on a tour of the place, explain how things work here. You can get a session in. See if you like it, and then make a decision. Or you could just buy a day pass whenever you feel like coming in if committing to an annual plan isn’t what you had in mind.”

Closed starter for @viclentxdelights Location: Drop it Like a Squat
After the chaos of the masquerade, Rohan would perhaps have loved nothing more than to curl up in a ball and sleep for days and days. But he had been avoiding his apartment. On one hand, while it had only been around 24 hours since the bracelets were clapped around his wrists, sealing his magic in temporary punishment, he missed Bustopher dreadfully. And the strange artifacts themselves were bulky anyway, difficult to get comfortable while wearing.
Not that he was complaining. He deserved this, whatever this was. Still, he had come to the gym that day for multiple reasons: to avoid being alone, to sort of obliquely seek out Forrest, and to maybe, just maybe, try to put his muscles to work, to seek strength when he now felt so weak. But perhaps he had felt weak since tasting that glimmer of true power on Halloween, so he was beginning to fear, and would thus feel weak forever.
“Uh, excuse me…I’m, uh, looking to…sign up, I guess? I don’t know how places like this work.”

Forrest Reed is a vampire that currently resides in Downtown and has been a Lunar Cove resident for 26 years learning just how much switching species sucks.
THIS IS THE START
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Cis Male, He/Him  AGE: 32 PLACE OF BIRTH: Boston, Massachusetts OCCUPATION: Personal Trainer at Drop It Like A Squat  FACECLAIM: Oliver Stark
OF HOW IT ENDS
SPECIES: Vampire CLAN POSITION: Nonmember  AGE AT TRANSFORMATION: 31
WELCOME TO LUNAR COVE, FORREST REED
Trigger Warnings: Addiction
*Golden child, Lion boy; Tell me what it’s like to conquer.*
Forrest Reed was born into a role, or a myriad of roles – golden child, co-heir, mediator. All he knew of life was acting. From a young age, he’d known that his purpose in life was to be the perfect son, the paradigm of what a witch should be. He was a bright, personable child with a quick wit and an even quicker smile; an extrovert in every way, he seemed to thrive under the attention. He should’ve been everything a parent could want, he and his twin alike, both perfect in their own ways. Forrest and Poppy, two halves of the same coin, one as bright and warm as the sun, the other as illuminating and inspiring as the moon. Yet, it wasn’t enough to make their father stay. As the story goes, their father simply lost interest after the birth of their younger sibling, leaving their mother to raise three children on her own, and so, Alyssa had done the only thing she could do – she took her children, and moved them away, intent on giving them a new life, safe from the feeling of being abandoned by a father who didn’t want them. For the most part, the plan worked – Forrest had no memory of this father, just brief glimmers that seemed to burn out as quickly as they arrived.
*Fearless child, Broken boy; Tell me what it’s like to burn.*
But the pressure to be perfect could only last so long without consequences. For some, pressure creates diamonds. For others, pressure causes fissures to become cracks. It should have come as no surprise, then, when the cracks began to form in the perfect image. It began, first, with his feelings towards magic. It should’ve come easily, as everything else did, for Forrest. Instead, magic always felt wrong, like a part of him that he couldn’t quite access. While others took to it naturally, Forrest struggled, almost fighting against himself to tap into the well of power that should have been readily accessible. Soon, he found himself hating this part of himself that caused him to feel like a failure.
Then came the addictions – alcohol, just enough to take the edge off, to dull the force of the pressure that Forrest found himself bending under, then the peaceful escape that followed being fed off of. For a brief time, Forrest could exist in a space without pressure, without expectations. Chasing that became one of his top priorities. It was that chase that became the precursor to the plan – a weekend spent outside of Lunar Cove, a request, and the change. It’s been six months and Forrest is still trying to find his way as a vampire – bereft from the magic that he once hated, and the twin from whom he’d never been separated.

Choi Min-jun is a human that currently resides in Sunny Harbor and has been a Lunar Cove resident for 25 years being extraordinary amongst the supernaturals.
THIS IS THE START
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Cis Male, He/Him AGE: 41 PLACE OF BIRTH: Queens, NY OCCUPATION: Professor of Anthropology  FACECLAIM: Steven Yeun
OF HOW IT ENDS
SPECIES: Human COALITION POSITION: Leader
WELCOME TO LUNAR COVE, VINCENT CHOI
Choi Min-jun was not like other children; he was everything his name implied: gentle and handsome. The child of professors, he seemed to be born with an inherently inquisitive mind. From a young age the Choi’s attempted to instill in their son certain virtues – an open mind, a sense of humility, and a care for all creatures. As a child, Choi Min-jun was quiet, a scholarly sort of boy who was often dubbed “an old soul.” He could more often be found with his nose in a book rather than running around with other children. While others around him were seemingly content with their lot in life, Min-jun always had one question – why? Why was the world the way it was? Why did people treat one another so coldly? Why was he expected to be just another cog in the system?
So, it came as a surprise to no one when he fell into the field of anthropology. By examining the remains of other cultures, he could begin to answer some of the questions that had plagued him for years. After completing his Bachelor’s degree, Min-jun found himself accepting a teaching position in Lunar Cove. With a name town came a new name – Vincent Choi. Min-jun had learned over the course of his academic and professional careers that Shakepeare had been wrong – a rose by another name would not smell as sweet. Names were, in fact, critical to how a person was viewed in the world and the name his parents had carefully chosen felt awkward for English speaking tongues.
On paper, the town appeared to be like any other – quaint and unassuming – and Vincent believed that it would be a good stepping stone to future endeavors. Never in his wildest dreams could he have imagined just how different Lunar Cove would be from every other town. It was only a few weeks before Vincent realized that there was something very different about Lunar Cove. Some digging led to more questions, and slowly, Vincent began to uncover a world he couldn’t even imagine. It was the best kind of discovery an anthropologist could’ve made – a town in which supernaturals and humans lived together.
A few years after moving to Lunar Cove, Vincent met the woman who would become his wife. She was beautiful and intelligent and magical in the way only a witch could be; she drew him in in a way no one else had ever done. Having spent the majority of his life existing through the books he read or in his own mind, Vincent had never felt connected to another person until her. Theirs was a whirlwind romance; within a year of meeting, they were engaged and just months later, they were married. For some time, life was perfect. They were happy together. Happier than Vincent had ever been in life. When they found out that they were pregnant, it seemed as if life was only getting better. Then Vincent received a full time teaching position and was well on his way to achieving tenure.
But, of course, every fair tale must come to an end. The day had begun as any other – Vincent had kissed his wife and daughter and told them that he couldn’t wait to see them later – but when he and his daughter had returned home that evening, they’d found the house empty. Days passed. Then weeks. Soon, the months drifted into a year, and there was still no word. Vincent tried to keep life as normal as possible for his daughter, but it was difficult. As much as it hurt, he wanted to believe that her mother had simply left them. The alternative – that she’d gotten hurt, or worse – was simply too painful to consider.
So, when the position for Coalition leader opened up, he decided to run. Vincent had never thought that he’d want to lead the Coalition. He’d joined it years before as a way of connecting with other likeminded humans in town, but had never much felt connected to the enterprise. He’d found the old leader to be unethical. So, the opportunity to reshape the Coalition while ensuring that the town remained a safe place for his daughter to grow and thrive was not one he could pass up. He hadn’t expected to win – he’d never really been the most popular person – but when the results revealed that he had, in fact, won, it felt inevitable, as if Vincent had finally found the place he was meant to be, where he could do the most good for the most people.

Forrest had been keeping track loosely of each of his sisters throughout the entirety of the party. It was a force of habit that not even death could break from him. He’d learned over the years that this was the easiest way to ensure that Lia and Poppy stayed within each other’s good graces -- if Forrest could keep them apart, he could ensure that they didn’t end up deeply entrenched in an argument. But it had all happened so fast. One minute, Forrest had been gazing out at the party from behind the raven inspired mask he’d chosen to wear, the metal cool against his face. The next moment, it seemed as if the entire party had been thrown into chaos.
He’d lost track of Lia in the melee, but his gaze locked on his twin, watching in horror as she was attacked. “No,” he heard himself shout, already moving to be by his sister’s side. It was times like these that he was grateful for the enhanced speed that came with being a vampire. Within seconds, he was at his sisters’ sides, falling to his knees as he tried to assess the damage. “Jas,” he locked eyes with his half sister. He was sure they could both see the worry written all over his face and hear it thick in his voice. He’d only just met her but already Forrest felt as responsible for her as he did the others. “What the hell’s going on?” Forrest fought the urge to snarl the words out. Worry was making him panic and panic wouldn’t do them any good. “I can...” He swallowed. “I can help Poppy, but I need you to help keep us safe, if you’re up for that. Or I can try to take care of this situation,” he nodded in Raven’s direction, “and you help Poppy. But we’ve got to act fast.” @aequinoctium

Poppy had been ready to end the party and start the coven initiation when all hell had started to break loose and those who were dead appeared among them. Rather than wait around Poppy began looking for two people in particular Rohan and Jasmine, figuring if anyone could help control the dead it was them. Moving through the crowd of people quickly before anyone could get in her way as she saw the familiar cape. “Jasmine!” Poppy called out to her sister, ran towards her. “Hey, umm… do you know what the fuck is going on and why there’s suddenly so many dead people around?” She asked with slight worry in her voice, the last thing she wanted to do was panic her sister or the coven, but she didn’t know why any of these people were here. “Also can you help I don’t know get them out of here?” Poppy practically pleaded with her sister. “Just let me know what you need…” She trailed off as another voice yelled her name, she turned around slightly startled. As she came face to face with the woman who said her name she felt a sharp stab in the stomach.
Poppy was greeted with a knife from the previous supreme, as she let out a gasp the other woman jammed it in further. “Nothing personal Poppy, just I died too soon and you took my rightful spot.” Raven informed her as she pulled the sharp knife out. Looking down at the emptiness in her stomach, she felt numb from the overwhelming amount of pain. Putting a hand to her stomach as if it wasn’t real, she could feel the hole in her dress and the liquid pouring out over her hand. “I—” Poppy stuttered out, but any full sentences were unable to be made. Stumbling back as she tried to get away from Raven who was raising her knife once more, to protect her sister from being one of Raven’s casualties. “Jasmine go.” She warned, even though she had stumbled into Jasmine for support.

“Poppy!” Jas called back towards her sister, ducking her way through the crowd, before she finally made it to that of the supreme’s side. “Hey, you okay? And, uh… no? I’m typically not used to anyone else being able to see them? Well, except maybe Rohan,” She admitted, an uneasy breath breaking from her lips as she glanced around them. Her brows knitting with a look of concern as she looked back over towards her sister’s pleading gaze. “I, uh, theoretically? Though these ghosts don’t exactly seem dead or well ghosts, no more? And it will be hard to send them back without, well knowing how exactly they got here and what exactly they are? I-” She spoke her thoughts out loud, her mind moving a mile a minute as she tried to come up with a solution that wouldn’t result in her resorting to the one thing she had promised herself she wouldn’t do again.
But, any thought she might have had as to how to evacuate the ghosts was quickly pushed out of her head as she watched one of the dead greet her sister with that of a knife. “Poppy!” A cry broke from Jas’ lips as she watched the knife be ripped out from her sister’s stomach and the sister she had just gotten fall back in floor in pain. “Like hell am I leaving you,” Jasmine told her as she wrapped her arms tightly around her sister, making the pair of them intangible as the woman before them swung at them with the blade once more.

“Aw, cute, you thought I was trying to pick you up.” The wolf held a hand to his chest, batting his eyelashes at the other before his lips broke into a laugh. With all the heaviness in the air, it was nice to at least, still have the friends that he’d feared were dead– truly dead. “Yeah, but your death wasn’t permanent, so you’re not owed any grace. Not anymore than you already had when you returned, so…” He shrugged, motioning at the waitress to order his usual. “Heard y’all didn’t have it that great, you good?” The mocking in his tone had completely faded. As much as Roman loved to give his friends shit, he cared more.
Tumblr media
“You’ve been trying to pick me up for years now.” Forrest answered in a matter of fact tone, as if he’d accept no arguments even though Forrest was joking. at Roman’s answer, Forrest pouted. “Dying should win me some kind of grace for at least a year,” he whined. “Maybe two.” He could joke about his circumstances now, but only because that was so much easier than forcing himself to come to terms with decisions he’d made. He’d thought that since he’d played a hand in his own transformation it would be easier to swallow, but every day that came, Forrest just felt more and more out of his depth. Halloween night had proven as much. “Yeah,” he replied, running a hand through his hair. “Fine. Well, as fine as could be expected. We all made it through so I’m counting that as a win”

“How are you?” Even as the question left his lips, Vincent knew it wasn’t the right one to ask. The words were flimsy, paltry, in the face of all they’d seen and experienced recently, but what else could he ask. “Let’s qualify that, I suppose,” he begun, an attempt to try again. “How are you physically? Any injuries that need taking care of?” Cataloguing the physical after effects of Halloween seemed to be the easiest place to start. After all, Vincent figured it would likely be a long time before anyone was okay emotionally, if ever. “We’ve all just gone through a trauma, you know? I hear it helps to talk about it.”

“It’s not really that unthinkable, is it,” Vincent questioned, throwing a single glance over his shoulders. Healthy coping methods tended to be thrown out the window when disaster struck. “Honestly, I’m surprised it’s taken this long for us to get to this point.” He half mumbled the sentence, thoughts more focused on getting out of the store and back to his house than on maintaining a conversation. Even if the conversation was with June, someone he’d had on his list of folks to check in on. With a sigh, Vincent turned so he could face her. “How are you,” he asked, eyebrow quirked. “Honestly.”

“Fuck,” Juniper let out as she browsed the shelves for another bottle of her favorite red. They seemed to be out of stock, which made sense considering she’d been buying constantly over the past few weeks to cope with all the stories the newspaper had been pushing about the undead– not the kind she was already used to. She grabbed the closest one to it, hoping it was as good, and headed towards the cashier. The line was ridiculously long for a small store, and it had her letting out a huff. “Great, now most of the population is heading towards alcoholism,” an eyeroll accompanied her venom filled words. “Literal fuckin’ zombies done did it, huh?” She muttered to the person before her.

“Madam Mayor,” Vincent greeted. The last few days had been difficult -- more than difficult, if he was being honest -- and Vincent was just getting around to checking in on the people he considered to be allies, friends even. He felt guilty about it, as if he’d abandoned them, but when danger had struck, his every thought had been on his daughter. Was still on his daughter. Maybe that made him an unsuitable leader. Maybe leadership demanded that he put aside all personal attachments and focus solely on carrying out his duties. It was a thought that had been rattling around his mind for a few days now, one that he hadn’t quite come to a resolution over. So, instead, he’d settled on doing the one thing that always could get him out of his own thoughts -- focusing on someone else’s problems. “You look like you could use a drink... Or seven.”

Forrest was doing what he did best -- burying his emotions until he could almost believe that they didn’t exist. The trauma from the things that happened recently? Nonexistent. Which was why he was currently occupying a booth at the caffeine crypt, waiting for an old friend to show up.
“That’s the worse pick up line I’ve ever heard,” Forrest deadpanned, gaze drifting over Roman. He was sure there was a hint of relief in his voice. In the aftermath of all that had happened, touching base with the handful of people in his life had seemed like a good idea. He needed to make sure that each of them had remained unharmed. “You’d think dying, even for a little bit, would earn me some slack from you, but here you are: annoying as ever.”

Roman wasn’t a fan of the lingering smell of blood that lingered in the coffee shop. He’d nearly forgotten what it was like in there. Sure, they sold blood, and it was most convenient for his friend, but he hated the smell of it altogether. Nevermind, the stench that covered the streets of Lunar Cove… He hadn’t been there for what happened, but the remaining odor was clue enough for what had gone down. That was the thing about this town, everything lingered.
“You look dead,” The werewolf smirked as he joined Forrest at the table. “I thought seeing others like you would bring some life back to your face.”

Basics:
Name: Min-Jun Vincent Choi Species: Human Age: 41
Details:
there’s not much to know about him; his childhood was pretty generic -- happy, healthy, raised to ask questions and be openminded.
he was always a bookish sort of child who was curious about why people form groups, and in the things that link us rather than separate us.
he moved to lunar cove in his 20s, when he accepted a teaching position. this was also when he made the decision to go by vincent professionally.
it was also when he met the woman who’d become his wife, hanna. she was a witch and discovering magic made vincent realize that the world was so much bigger than he could possibly imagine.
hanna and vincent were married. shortly after their daughter, irene, was born. for a few years, life seemed to be perfect, but one day, vincent returned home and his wife wasn’t there.
weeks passed. then months. and she never came back. it’s been over a year and he doesn’t know what happened to her.
when the position of coalition leader opened up, he decided to run. he’d never really thought he’d run for a leadership role in the coalition, but he’d been opposed to some of the things the former leader had done and he saw this as an opportunity to make things right.
vincent strongly believes that humans and supernaturals can live in harmony. he hopes to be a fair and just leader while ensuring that humans continue to have a seat at the table.

“Kit?” Valerie repeated the word as she made a face and tossed her hair over her shoulder. “Well aren’t we fancy. Shame it doesn’t fit anymore though. Because that could totally have worked.” She shrugged with a slow exhale. She pressed her lips together before slowly humming and nodding her head. “I mean super hero is a classic but if you want to have more fun…I might be available for brain storming.” Val couldn’t help a playfully toothy grin from slipping across her lips. She could smell the vampire on him, but at the moment she was in a rather playful mood.
A shame, indeed. Forrest had been looking forward to wearing the kit again. So much so that he hadn’t thought of a backup plan. It had been a lazy costume, he knew, and there was something to said about reliving his glory days, but still... “So, you’re offering to help, right,” he clarified. He wasn’t going to turn down a perfectly good offer. Not when he was almost sure that his sisters would go all out and that he’d definitely receive looks for showing up dressed as himself. “Because if you are, I’m definitely taking you up on that.”

“Wow,” Lia said with an exhaled breathe, eyes narrowed at Forrest. “Ok, you’re right. I’m sorry for that.” Her own shoulder bumped back into his. Forrest had always been the bigger man. He was the mediator between two bickering sisters–a third too that Lia could’ve also benefited from Forrest having to mediate. Unfortunately, that hadn’t been the case, and rather than hear Jasmine out sensibly, her anger had gotten the best of her. As it did with Poppy, as it did with anyone when it came to delivering news Lia didn’t want to hear. “How is it going, mm? That’s a question…that. is. a. question…” She hummed under her breath, trying to find the right answer, the other answer than the one she wanted to say. “Just peachy. Festivities are good though, I’m enjoying them as I have in past years. You?”
Tumblr media
Forrest hadn’t been expecting an apology. When it came to his sisters, he’d learned that walking on eggshells was usually best. He and Poppy had always had an understanding, a seamless kind of existence, but then, they were twins -- they’d always seemed like extensions of one another. It was different with Lia. She wasn’t connected in the same way, didn’t have someone who inherently knew her more intimately than anyone else ever could. Forrest had never understood how lonely that kind of existence could be until he’d woken up, changed, and had realized that not only had he severed his connection to magic -- a small thing that he hadn’t really mourned seeing as he’d never really felt connected to it in the first place -- but he’d also severed his connection to Poppy; she’d always felt wrapped up in him, a presence in his thoughts that he’d simply taken for granted, but the loss had left him feeling more alone than he’d ever felt before. He imagined that that was how Lia felt. Though he was pretty sure that she’d find some way out of answering if he ever asked. Like she did now. “Of course,” he answered offhandedly, allowing the subject change. “It’s one of my favorite times of the year.”

“Oh, I - I was just trying to be polite?” he confessed, “Don’t know if I can say that, but, you’re right, that’s with most cases, and it does ring true for here as well, I suppose?” Another response filled with uncertainty because really could he even say that with surety when he didn’t know what the feeling was like? When the distinction between the two sides varied so greatly? It was only ever questions Jonah was faced with, and were luck something was answered it only gave way to more speculations. “Isn’t it already?” It slipped before he could stop it, thought being voiced and expanding on it’s own will, “Sure, the décor doesn’t stay up all year round, and the species count is limited to a few but they stay don’t they? Like you said, things that go bump in the night, keeping bumping every night.”
Tumblr media
“You’re suggesting that us existing is a celebration?” Forrest wasn’t quite sure that he’d grasped what the other man was saying, but the idea of the existence of this town being a perpetual celebration of supernatural life was a nice thought. "I’ve always been curious about humans that choose to live here. Is it some sort of morbid curiosity or something? Because why else would anyone come here when there are so many other perfectly fine options to choose from?”

“Exploring the vastness of the cosmos isn’t generally accepted as sexy? Unbelievable.” He clocked Forrest’s fidgeting as he looked at him, pretending to be affronted. Honestly the banter felt familiar and simple, comforting when measured against all the shit he usually dealt with. “Hey—hurtful, you beautiful bastard. I’d say I could always go as the mysterious third Reed twin, but I’m taking the high road,” he replied. “Plus, your sister is my emotional support bartender. I can’t afford to lose that.” They reached the front of the line and Nico realized that he hadn’t thought of what he wanted to get, and frowned at the menu behind the counter. “Actual most unsexy thing? Decision paralysis, final answer. I doubt they carry that at Spirit Halloween. What are you getting?” he asked, fully intending to order the same, like a coward.
Tumblr media
“Space is sexy. The outfits astronauts wear to make sure they’re not taken out by the elements are not,” Forrest clarified. His expression was stern, as if this conversation was one of great importance. And it was. Somewhat speaking. Forrest thought that, in that moment, there was nothing more important he could be discussing. This was far more significant than all the times people glanced over at him with quizzical looks, not quite sure if they should ask how he was doing, or the times the braver lot had drifted over to ask how he was feeling after his accident. “You know the definition of twins, right,” he teased, one eyebrow cocked. “Plus, if there was three of us, I’m pretty sure Poppy ate it in the womb.” He was teasing, of course. Having spent his entire life as a twin, he’d never been able to imagine what being a singleton would feel like, but now that he’d irrevocably severed that connection with his twin that he’d come to take for granted, Forrest had to admit that it was a lonely existence. One that he was still coming to terms with. “So, would you just short circuit whenever someone asks you a question?” He laughed. “It might not win you any costumes, but you’d definitely be my favorite. If that counts for anything.” He glanced at the menu. He’d known what he wanted when he’d first gotten on the line, but now he looked at the options just to make sure that there wasn’t anything else more appealing. “Honestly? I’m feeling hot chocolate with the little marshmallows.”

“Does it feel weird or is it exactly what we should be doing?” Reese asked, taking a sip of her coffee. “Jesus gets a whole holiday for his birthday, why shouldn’t we get a day to celebrate ourselves?” With a wave of her hand, a small flame flickered from the tips of her fingers, “Like, isn’t that worthy of a little party and some candy? Things that go bump in the night keep the night interesting,” she said with a wink, closing her hand on the flame to let it go out.

She made a decent point, Forrest thought as he listened to Reese’s reasoning. Jesus did, in fact, get an entire holiday all to himself. And it was celebrated internationally. Was it too much to ask for one day when they weren’t made out to be the bad guys? “You’re right,” he agreed, “but people don’t usually like to celebrate the things that scare them. Most people can agree that we need monsters -- we make stories more interesting -- but most people would also say that you’re not supposed to celebrate the things that scare you. That feels too much like love and admiration and who wants to love a monster?”
