thinking about how when you experience a lot of shame in your formative years (indirectly, directly, as abuse or just as an extant part of your environment) it becomes really difficult to be perceived by other people in general. the mere concept of someone watching me do anything, whether it's a totally normal activity or something unfamiliar of embarrassing, whether I'm working in an excel spreadsheet or being horny on main, it just makes my skin crawl and my brain turn to static because I cannot convince myself that it's okay to be seen and experienced. because to exist is to be ashamed and embarrassed of myself, whether I'm failing at something or not, because my instinctive reaction to anyone commenting on ANYTHING I'm doing is to crawl into a hole and die. it's such a bizarre and dehumanizing feeling to just not be able to exist without constantly thinking about how you are being Perceived. ceaseless watcher give me a god damn break.

Debbie was an Addams. She never realised it as much as they did.
You have enslaved him. You have placed Fester under some strange sexual spell. I respect that. [...] You have married Fester. You have destroyed his spirit. You have taken him from us. All that I could forgive. But Debbie... Pastels?
long ramble under the cut because I'm very normal about the Addams.
Morticia was so real for this. She extended many, many olive branches. She just thought the house didn't deserve such punishment as that colour palette. And that entirely underlines the point. Addamses are largely outcasts with exotic tastes who do not care about conformity. Debbie shared most of their values (you could say she had... Addams Family Values...) but she couldn't get rid of her ties to how the rest of the world would see her. Pastels are conformism. They turn the dark edgy but homey mansion into a fake-plastic villa (or perhaps, a Barbie villa). While attempting to bomb Fester, her main action was rehearsing how she would talk to the police to appear normal. When someone comes to the Addamses, normally the Addamses just put them in some Rube Goldberg machine that dumps them in a lake or in front of the house, they don't play pretend. This is the one thing that the Addams family would push against. They don't mind the rest. They mind their tranquillity, their freedom, their ability to have their lives in their taste. It's an entire clan, not a bloodline. And they incorrectly assumed that Debbie would recognise it. Unfortunately, she was too far up her own arse. And also... well... she did get cursed to burst and burn by Eudora. This was, eventually, a test of her ability to care about the others and open up to them. She "burst and burnt," literally, because even when married to Fester and bearing his last name, Debbie Addams didn't learn about the Addams family. She didn't consider the curse anything more than a "weirdo thing," and she's doing her own weirdo thing that is a very different weirdo thing, and hers can look good to the normative onlooker, thank you very much. She could have asked Fester what that was about. Fester would have known how to get rid of his mother's curse. They even gave her a lot of chances in her final scene. They sympathise with her, they listen to her story and take her side every step of the way. Gomez and Morticia tear up. "Wish me luck!" and everyone says "Good luck!" in earnest. Gomez, I think, exemplifies it the best, when she says "you took me in, you accepted me, but did any of you love me?" and he just calls for a show of hands, which she tied up herself. She would have felt their love, if she'd just tried. And there's something very, very special about how Pubert's condition heals up not when every established Addams is back, but when Debbie shows up with a shotgun. "Three generations together at last" includes her. She was an Addams. She just failed the test again and again, and that is a shame.
Finally watched the Addams Family Values recently! and honestly. my main takeaway is

Debbie slays. And Joan Cusack is a QUEEN

oh the 90s called? well I had a call from the happiest years of your life and they said they want you to remember whimsical joy instead of pretending that a sense of superiority will make you happy while you choke out your own soul
