A little idea I may grow but I'm unsure.

I started thinking of Gordon being Saturn, with so many new moons to look out for. Then it became this.

I do want to design the others, you can see the lights from Benrey, Tommy, Coomer and Bubby at the very least.

Now he's a new spirit almost, confused and alone with just the light of the universe.

I have little things but I don't know if anyone's actually interested ha.

One thing I hate more than anything else in the world is how especially at present there is a normalization of both mistreatment / dehumanization of scare actors as well as expectation of sexualization / charged interactions between certain actors and patrons. Largely due to tiktok and the phenomenon of certain scare actors (who probably shouldn’t be working in the industry) talking about how much they love to hit on patrons they find attractive and intentionally making characters that are supposed to seem ‘sexy’ to patrons.

More under the cut it’s such a hugely nuanced topic and I wanna try and talk about it even though I am actively fighting the NyQuil.

A friend of mine has covered the topic quite well in that you can play a flirty character but understand it’s a CHARACTER. The second you’re doing it because you find someone attractive it is sort of a violation of rules, working a haunt is still being At Work and ultimately your goal is to entertain, not gain any sort of personal romantic gratification from patrons. Talking about getting that gratification publicly and expressing how you try to evoke it only encourages the expectation of scare actors to be openly sexual / flirty with patrons and leave many disappointed when either their own advances are rejected or they don’t receive an advance from an actor.

This all being said, this doesn’t mean all interactions that end up being somewhat charged or involve physical contact are inherently bad- there just has to be an understanding of consent between the actor and the patron, same with any other live performance.

Here’s an innocuous example, with the idea of giving someone a hug. You don’t go up to scare actors at random and throw your arms around them- that’s a violation of their personal space. You can go up and ask them for a hug (if you’re in line- don’t do this In houses as it interrupts the flow of patrons through the house), and if they say yes, you’re welcome to give it- if they say no or anything that isn’t Yes or gesturing for you to give them a hug, don’t. You can put your arms out for them to gesture for a hug, and if this is reciprocated then you get a hug. But if they don’t respond to it or are dismissive, don’t push it. There is an understanding of consent made here. Obviously not all situations will be that easy.

I’ve been on both sides of it- both the patron and the actor. From the patron perspective, there has to be, again, that understanding of personal space.

My first time at a haunted house, I was absolutely fucking smitten with this one line actor. I got up to the first point of seeing them and waved up at them, then reached my hand up for them to shake as a greeting. (This is the first step, again, of establishing an interaction- you reach out, don’t be aggressive, but leave it as an open invitation for an actor to use). They proceeded to lick their hand and then shake mine. The second time I ran into them, they climbed down to a gap on the fence in the waiting area and gestured for Me to come closer (again, a nonverbal expression of consent/instruction), and proceeded to ruffle my hair and give me a kiss on the forehead. It was one of the best things to ever happen to me and I couldn’t shut up about it for weeks.

Why was this okay, though? I just spent the last bit setting up ups actors don’t owe you any kind of charged interaction. The thing is that there was an understanding of consent here on both sides- If I hadn’t wanted to get close to them, I would have responded to their gesture differently. If they didn’t want to take my hand initially, they wouldn’t have. These ‘establishing’ Interactions are important.

On the actor side of things, you sometimes have to make snap judgements. You have to gauge the audience’s interactions and comfort levels above all else. The last haunt I worked, I utilized spit effects as well as a somewhat less sanitary scare in eating and producing rubber worms from my mouth. I’d then proceed to torment patrons with them. I had to keep in mind patron comfort- if they weren’t responding well, I wouldn’t push it with the worm. There was, however, an instance of jokingly telling a patron to eat the worm and she responded in kind by opening her mouth. I proceeded to lower it towards her, expecting her to chicken out like everyone who’d pulled that little gag prior had. She did not, despite having ample time to close her mouth or pull away, and I wound up putting the worm all the way in her mouth before removing it and she smiled and thanked me. That was fucking WEIRD, but again, not a violation- there was an establishment of consent and overall was a positive (albeit gross) interaction.

All this to say- at the end of the day, consent is key to scaring as well as walking through a haunt. You have to behave yourself- actors have to abide by house rules and conduct themselves accordingly to their haunt’s expectations and patrons have to obey any provided rules as well as be a decent fucking person.

There is a lot of nuance and room to ‘play’ with haunts, so long as there is consideration of consent and personal boundaries at play as well. Be a decent person, and treat scare actors like people. Underneath all that makeup, they are.
