Comic I did for a class. We were given some dialogue and were supposed to imagine the scene that went with it.

So I tried to wring as much tension and depth out of the dialogue as possible.

Unfinished Rain World fic

Survivor and Monk meet Artificer. They are all very awkward.

Survivor rests their hand on Monk's head, keeping them both in a low crouch while they stare at the thing on the other end of the room.

"Is it.. some kind of a lizard?"

"It's a slugcat-!"

"What slugcat eats scavengers??" Survivor shakes their head. "That's not a slugcat."

Monk squints at the creature, then looks back to their sibling. "...I don't think it's eating them. It looks like it's just tearing all the guts out." Survivor looks similarly back and forth once, then again, then scrunches up their nose. "....Why??" They're both quiet for a few seconds.

"I'm gonna look." Monk announces, and they're hopping down from their hiding place before Survivor can even get a word out. Survivor flicks their ears back, but follows suit.

Monk creeps closer, carefully, under cover of rocks and plants. Their stealth is impressive, always has been, but Survivor still picks a stick of rebar off the ground as they follow. Just in case. Indeed, the thing is not eating, just shredding corpses in its teeth, shaking them back and forth and making a mess. But it has all the looks of a slugcat. Thick tail, thin arms, short fur with a shining coat of mucus- barring a large calloused scar down its left-hand side. Monk, apparently, is emboldened by this. They slink out of Survivor's reach and into view. Survivor stays back, gripping their spear.

Monk calls out, "Hello?"

The stranger slugcat looks up, bristling, until it sees the new company is unarmed. It relaxes its appearance somewhat, and Monk continues,

"Uh. You're a slugcat, aren't you?"

It stares at Monk for a few moments too long, before growling, "Sure."

"What, um. What are you doing?"

It looks down at its handiwork and licks its chops. "Eating."

"Oh."

"Do you want any?"

".. No, thank you. Why are you eating scavengers?"

"I killed them."

"Oh."

There is a pause. Monk is not sure how to continue after that. For better or worse, the stranger does instead.

"Where is your colony? Your family?"

"Uh..... Around."

It hums. "I doubt they would want a pup out so far on its own. You should be on your way home, before the rain comes."

"We're not pups! We'll manage-"

It flicks its ears. "'We'?"

"Oh- uh- me and my sibling-"

"Sibling." The stranger flicks its ear again and glances around.

"Um..." Monk starts again, "Why are you out here alone?"

It stares at the spot Monk had emerged from, and gives no indication of answering the question.

Finally, "You and your sibling. Go home."

"But-"

"Now."

Monk flattens their ears and steps back. The stranger watches. Not satisfied, she bares her teeth and snaps them together. Monk turns tail and hops away.

the family's GFM has met it's goal! i am so relieved, thank you all for your help, i hope for nothing but their safety, health and peace; keep paying attention to the world going on, keep educating yourselves, and keep helping others in any small way you can, focus best you can without getting discouraged.
