If his marriage to Larra hadn't been accepted, would he have returned to Westeros anyway (Assuming the Rogares gave him the option) or would he stay with his wife?
@dimeremantiro
i feel like they wouldn't have gave him a choice, given alyn had to pay ransom to get him back - and agree to the terms that their marriage would not be set aside no matter what - but like if they had, i don't think he would be able to leave her pregnant with his child. like yes he would've wanted to reunite with his brother, and would have likely sought him out eventually, but at the time, he did not think it was his choice. regardless how well the rogares treated him, he was still a hostage they inherited from bambarro bazanne when he died in debt in 132 ac. like his marriage to larra was the best case scenario, in his eyes. it gave him a sense of security during his time in lys, though he never really forgot how paper thin that sense of security really was.
it wouldn't have really been a choice for the rogares ; and so it would not have been a choice to viserys. there wasn't a sense of loyalty there to anyone beyond larra - but this was a twelve year old boy, who at that time had been a hostage one way or another for four years. he wouldn't have believed he would've had the power to change that if they'd told him no. and the only scenario i could see him leaving of his own will is if they had, and if larra wasn't pregnant with aegon iv at the time .

he stares , furrow between his brows . cannot help the momentarily lapse of his control at the sound of his name - aegon was elder, it was true. but not like their elder brothers had been. he and aegon had been companions, their elder brothers had been a source of security. somebody to protect them until they were old enough to protect themselves. and jace had died for it, he thinks, and swallows, nodding, nobody had protected him at the gullet. he takes a step forward, and finally does he find his voice, " yes. lord oakenfist, found me. i did not return home alone, " he hates the way his voice tremors, the childlike quaver so at odds with the man he's become. " he paid for my return, " handsomely, viserys had been told. a healthy sum to be repaid in time - he would make sure. though home, has always been dragonstone - all that remained there were ghosts. ghosts and a life wrenched from his grasp before he could stop it.
another step taken, and he wants, desperately, not to hold himself so proudly. another day, another life - he would have thrown himself into his arms and wept. he is to be a father in mere moons - he should be able to at least impress his elder brother. he should be, and yet. and yet. " i've come home, " he repeats, and lifts his chin. " and i will stay. i will stay. " the word good brother is one that chokes, though they have not been unkind to him, he has never forgotten the truth of things. yet aegon, and luke - were his brothers. brothers of blood and a childhood long set aside by the fires of war.
@visery2 / starter call.
he had searched for his brother as far as he could think of, separating from alyn to cover more ground at essos. pentos had been the original destination they had had for aegon and viserys, and there he had headed, but that had been before the battle of the gullet ( before aegon escaped to dragonstone, before jace's death ). still, he had gone while alyn followed the rumors at lys, searched the city with ever - growing concern, and yet nothing. no one who had seen a silver - haired child, no one who could point him where his brother had been taken. a targaryen prince should not be so difficult to find, luke thinks.
and yet nothing, he realizes as he enters the red keep. he returns with no brother and his mood as bleak as it has been ever since he heard of his loss. so he must have finally lost his mind, he thinks, when he enters the castle and sees a familiar looking face ( older, too many years gone and yet - ). ❝ - viserys ? ❞

TARGARYEN WEEK
day 3: one king → viserys ii
Viserys II had within him the capacity to be a new Conciliator, for no king had ever been shrewder or more capable. Tragically, a sudden illness carried him away in 172 AC. // marc warren as viserys ii

he has made many a mistake as a father; much to his own daughter’s detriment — to marry naerys to aegon was something he regrets, each and every day in seeing even the smallest things used as points to humiliate her - he has tried, in that, to keep a better hold on his eldest son’s inclination for cruelty and debauchery - yet it continues nonetheless. his smile turns into something of a grimace at that, “ some might say the violence is the point, “ yet his brother would not sit for the tourney either - so his hand must go in his stead — “ your brother finds it an easy fun, “ he reminds. with daeron trailing eagerly at aemon’s side - eager to take even the slightest glimpse of dark sister, promising him that when his time comes, he shall join the lists as well. “ it shall not go quite so far, sweet girl. we have had enough of such flippant loss of life, even more so from game-play. “ they had to listen to him, he spoke with the kings voice on such matters when his brother did not want to. he liked his position as hand. liked even more the security that came with such things - for him and his children. his other hand rests on her other arm, and he sighs, sighs and wonders perhaps if it was too much to place on the shoulders of anyone , such reminders. “ after the dance, many welcome reminders that such conflict can be play — that there was an age where war existed only on the tourney fields. it is brutal, yes — but such is life. “ he agrees with her, though. such performers oft did prove less costly then the more favorable spectacles. “ your aunts and I would agree with you. “
@sevynhells naerys.
" you may remain here, if you wish, " his eyes soften - he had not considered himself a changed man, but even he has noticed how he has hardened with the years. consumed by duty, above all. yet his daughter brings out a side of him he believed long buried. she had been a fragile child, his daughter. sick often, and he had taken to telling her stories to keep her mind at ease. days when dragons roamed the skies freely, stories of a home that had been lost to him before he had known it. he is rarely anything but straightforward, these days. yet his hand comes to rest, gently, on her arm, " it is not required of you to attend, dōna mēre . i shall stay with you as i'm able, and shall send aemon to lead you to your rooms. " duty is a thing he has taken great pains to instill in his children, though aegon seems to do what he would, as he would. - aemon could be trusted to do as he bade; though both would no doubt prefer to compete in the lists. " your uncle will understand , " a moment passes, a glimmer of old humor returns to violet eyes, lips turning up at the corners in a weary smile, " i've never much been a fan of tourneys, either. "

he tries to give her that moment — to let her breathe . yet her smile gives him hope that perhaps he isn’t making an utter fool of himself . or perhaps she was merely flustered due to what he was, not who. she is beautiful when she smiles , even more so when it is an uncontrolled thing — untroubled in a way he envies . the name is familiar at least, and he nods, “ I have heard many good things about your lady mother; though it is not she whom I aim to know, at present . I confess myself rather curious about you, “ she curtsies to him, and he bows in response ; a low sweeping gesture — when he raises his head the smile on his lips is near crooked. “ the honor is mine, lady tyshara. “ he hums , and shakes his head, “ you were doing quite well, before I came across your path, “ and so he finally sets his hand upon her waist, taking a step in so he might lead them.
" i should hope that you do, " he says simply, though a heartbeat passes and for a moment, he smiles too - meeting her stare, " should i make another - i would want to know it is appreciated," he hums; gentleman. he finds he likes it; the ease of it. though he'd place his bets on lannister, still he asks, " might i perhaps know my lady's name ? it seems rather unfair, the two of us being half introduced, " he is a prince of the realm, and near it's last - yet now all he wants is this. to feel as if his life was not have lived already. he reaches to take it, yet his eyes cast down to her hip, and there's a question in them when they meet hers again, " may i ?"

a bow of his head in acknowledgment — solemn faced , though something in his eyes dance as they raise to meet hers . court charm , he thinks , was easier then he’d thought - easier then he’d oft hoped it would be . “ I apologize all the same, “ he says, lips curling upward into something close to a smile, “ it is not very gentlemanly of me , is it ? “ though the mention of a dance, is something that gives him pause . he is not used to this , of all things — being asked to dance , is not something he’s ever placed himself in a position to accept prior to this. “ a lady such as you, should know nothing but joy . perhaps I will do so , to attempt to bring us both something close . “

I need people to realize he took no pleasure in taking the throne from daena. if his niece could’ve ascended the throne peacefully , he would’ve let it happen. but he knew that his son, who has always coveted the throne since aegon iii was on it, would’ve fought for his own claim . and viserys ii could not let that happen. he’s been working for sixteen years to keep the realm together, and if he chose to take power for himself , he could disinherit aegon iv, which is what he’d always planned to do .

King Viserys II Targaryen, Lady Larra Rogare, and their children — King Aegon IV, Prince Aemon, and Queen Naerys.

Did Viserys ever consider himself a Rogare? Did his feelings on his captive-adoptive family change when he married Larra? Did they change again when she left? If Larra had ever come back, would he have been as severe?
honestly ? never . he was always very keenly aware of his place in lys, and that definitely alters the way he behaved. he was ? eleven when he was inherited by lysandro rogare from sharako lohar, who had taken him at the age of eight from the battle of the gullet. sharako, who was planning to either sell him back to his mother, or sell his head to his uncle. he very pointedly clung to his targaryen identity, with the way he kept his dragon egg with him throughout the four years he was in lys. and i think that helped strengthen a lot of his resolve and helped him overcome a lot of his helplessness. but he was very powerless in lys, and he well knew it.
i think he knew full well what the rogares wanted with him, and that they hoped to use his name, and his title as a way to establish some sort of influence in westeros - and until they were back in westeros, he couldn't do much beyond just allowing it to happen . there was always a level of distance between them and him - and i think larra was the only one of them he'd ever began to trust. but like, before alyn went searching for him - there would've been no going back to westeros . he viewed his marriage and the subsequent consumation of it as a way of cementing his place among them . as taking some sort of hand in the course of his own fate.
he tried his best to be a good husband to larra, and to do his duty by her, but the whole of their marriage spanned from when he was eleven, to seventeen. i think the presence of her brothers at court, knowing what we know about the conditions of the ransom alyn paid, led him to feeling a bit trapped. like he is the kings brother, and the boy who's fate is ultimately in their hands, and theirs to control - all at once, due to the fact when he returns, she's already carrying his child. when larra leaves him, it feels like that portion of his life is finally over.
he becomes as stern as he does when she leaves him , because he's a single father and divorcee at seventeen, who has lived his entire life believing he'll find security in duty - and that no matter how hard he tried he failed his wife, and he failed his children by not being enough to keep their mother with them. he doesn't fault larra for leaving him, he knows why she did it - he finds fault in himself for not being enough to protect her. if she came back, i don't think it would make him as happy as it would make him feel like - cautious. i think he'd be worried at first she would leave again, which would hurt their children. and depending on when she comes back to them, naerys essentially does not know her. i don't think their relationship would get any better if she came back. like his perception of love, and what makes him happy, are very much blurred with his sense of duty. he's not a romantic individual , though he tried to be for the sake of his marriage. and after it comes to an unofficial end, he'd just be incredibly weary and very very cautious more then absolutely anything if she returned to them.

he doesn't really speak high valyrian as much as he used to in his childhood, though he taught it to all three of his children - it's something that he tends to associate with the happier moments in his life, and something that he rarely uses unless it's with his brother or his own children.

@sinfyre .
" if it will not hatch, i shall claim one, " yet that does not mean the young viserys does not hope for the day that it does - a hatchling to match his brother's, perhaps. there were many unclaimed dragons, his mother and father were quick to remind him. yet he was not quite big enough to do so - and he does not like to feel as if he'd been left behind. he eyes him, tentatively , the briefest bit of interest shining through - he had heard, rather then seen, aegon the elder's dragon. the tales told of sunfyre's beauty were ones he had been eager to see for himself , though he had not even begun to think to ask to do such things. of his uncles, he thinks - he was the least daunted by the presence of the elder. yet if viserys was anything, it was undeniably curious, and soon enough it wins out above all the rest, " is it true ? " he asks, " what they say of yours ? i have heard talk that- "
