Thinking of Watching The Untamed?

 For anyone thinking of watching The Untamed, here are some tips:

Watching Order:

You can watch the episodes in release order (1-50) but if have not read the book or watched the donghua (animation) you may get confused by the story. Basically, the story starts in the ‘present’ for the first 2 episodes then there is a 30 episode flashback/ ‘past’ section. I would suggest watching it in chronological order:

Episode 2 (last 2-3 minutes) –> Episode 33 (flashback ends at about 13 minutes in) –> Episodes 1&2 –> Rest of Episode 33 –> Episode 34-50.

[I know its a bit annoying how they started and ended the flashbacks in the middle of episodes]

I personally watched the episodes in order until episode 33, then I went back and watched episodes 1&2, and boy did some things make A  LOT more sense!

Character Names:

Most characters have two names (birth names and a courtesy name). Some even have titles that they are called by other characters. Here are the two main characters names and titles:

Wei Ying (birth name) + Wei Wuxian (courtesy name) + Yiling Patriarch/ Yiling Laozu (title)

Lan Zhan (birth name) + Lan Wanji (courtesy name) +  Hanguang Jun (title)

Note: They usually call each other by their birth names.

Note: these two main characters are really the only characters that are called all of their names/ titles, other characters are only referred to by one name or one name plus their title. For example:

Wen Ning (birth name) + Ghost General (title)  (only once is his courtesy name used)

Jiang Cheng (courtesy name; only once or twice is his birth name used) +  Sandu Shengshou (not really used except in formal situations)

Lan Xichen (courtesy name) + Zewu Jun (title)

Birth names are really only used by people who are very close to you, even then not always. Courtesy names are used most often. Family/ sect name comes first and does not change between birth and courtesy name.

Sect/ Families:

There are 5 key cultivator sects that you need to know and thankfully they each have a corresponding colour/s that make it helpful to differentiate between them:

Gusu Lan Sect: White & light blue (they wear headbands/ forehead ribbons)

Lanling Jin Sect: Yellow/ gold (they also have a red dot between their eyes)

Qinghe Nie Sect: Grey/ silver (there are only two named characters for this sect so it’s the easiest)

Yunmeng Jiang Sect: Purple & dark blue

Qishan Wen Sect: Red & black

Left to Right: Lan Jingyi, Lan Xichen, Lan Qiren, Lan Wangi, Lan Sizhui, Lan Yi

Left to Right: Jin Zixuan, Jin Guangshan, Jin Guangyao, Jin Zixun, Jin Ling 

Left to Right: Nie Mingjue, Nie Huaisang

Left to Right: Jiang Fengmian, Jiang Cheng, Wei Wuxian, Jiang Yanli, Yu Ziyuan

The name at the beginning of each sect (E.g. Gusu) is the location of that sect or the closest town to where the sect is.

Wei Ying/ Wei Wuxian while having grown up on the Jiang Sect, does not conform to their style or colours of dress. Instead, he usually wears black, dark blue or dark grey robes with red (later white/ grey) under clothes.

baby lan zhan in early cloud recesses days is so funny. he has spent his whole life up to that point building walls, making sure he won’t fall in love, being distant. and then wwx appears and starts acting like an idiot, trying to catch his attention and lan zhan is just instantly attracted to him. he is so mad at himself, you can feel the anger radiating off him. he’s just like “i was so so careful, how is this happening?? how is this what i end up liking? he’s an idiot”

meanwhile wwx’s mind just goes *pretty boy* from the moment he first sees lan zhan and he proceeds to hit on him so hard, offering to kneel down for him, painting his portrait, showing him gay porn, trying to undress in front of him
