Burrowed into Revenant is where Natalie remained for a while, even after her hiccups and trembling had come to a stop. There was comfort to be found there. Shelter and protection. She felt safe-- she felt not so alone.
Once Natalie was somewhat calm again, she gave a small, appreciative nuzzle into the simulacrum. "I'm sorry." She apologized again, her voice now clear and free of sobs and hiccups. She knew he would probably hush her again or dismiss it entirely, but she still felt the need to say it. This hadn't been what she planned for their visit-- but maybe he had expected it some degree, knowing her better than she knew herself at times.
Natalie then leaned slightly back. Not enough to pull away from their embrace, but just enough to look at the optics of the sim with her bright, tear stained, blues. "And-- and thank you."
Tumblr media
She seemed so small and fragile like this.
For how much the little engineer's surface often SHINED brightly, electric with almost overwhelming optimism and energy, Revenant had always known that this was what lay underneath: a soft and tender and VULNERABLE thing. He had abused that knowledge in times past, but now, at least, there were no surprises seeing Natalie's weakness laid bare.
He held her tight through her little storm so she would not be tossed by its waves. And when its clouds began to clear some, loosened his hold of her enough to allow her shifting around and answering his embrace.
It had been enough time now that he had acclimated to her touch and her warmth. But there was something about being wrapped in each other like this that still felt strangely - though not unpleasantly - FOREIGN to him. Maybe because he had spent so many decades, centuries, WITHOUT, and most of his former life too.

Natalie was intent on leaving the lobby in a frustrated huff and puff, but the engineer truly struggled with being consistently harsh. When Octane cheerily dismissed her, Natalie spared a brief glance back at him and allowed for her lips to finally curl upwards once more with a light hearted, incredulous, scoff, like she just couldn't believe his charming audacity.
Then, the pair were left to their own devices as Natalie made her way towards the cafeteria area. She passed by a few more Legends and momentarily stopped to say hello and ask how they were, but for the most part, she focused on getting herself food and water.
Soon, Wattson was equipped with a protein bar and strawberry smoothie for herself, and a second protein bar for Octane, should he still be in the lobby by the time she returned. She partially hoped not, only for the sake of both parties. She didn't want to come back to more fighting, or any conversations that could escalate to some kind of confrontation.
Tumblr media
The sim was unamused and otherwise unfazed at Silva's PLEASED look, gaze merely lifting to regard Natalie again. Her pouting, her scoffing, her disapproving squint - all very familiar to him, of course. But now that she had taken turns scolding the both of them, she seemed intent on having a BREATHER.
Whatever concern he may have felt over her death was allowed to relax some, finding that at least she still had an appetite. A good sign that she wasn't too troubled by their loss or what she had suffered in the final fight.
Revenant, though, seemed in no hurry to get up nor had any intention of following. Instead, he looked again to his wounded hand and unceremoniously grabbed for the two damaged digits, tearing them free with a short jerk and tossing them blindly AWAY. Flexing the fingers that were left.

The gentle shushing of her crying accompanied by such a tender kiss only made the engineer weep more openly. In the safe, caring, unjudgmental arms of Revenant, she did not feel the urgency to pull herself back together. Like her broken-ness wasn't something she had to hide. She leaned right back into Revenant.
Natalie continued to cry for a handful of moments, trembling and gasping until her heart relented some of its grief. Tears slowed down to linger on her lids while her breath regained some control in the form of hiccups.
And once she was able to think and feel a little more clearly, Natalie shifted in her spot in an attempt to turn and wrap her own arms around the simulacrum. She was trying to redirect the excess feelings of love and care that was grief back to Revenant.
Tumblr media
Revenant steadied her in his arms, bent his head to kiss once, softly, into her hair. "Shhh," he soothed gently. Not unlike how he sometimes soothed the cries of dying competitors in the ring, but there was something far more TENDER in his tone now. It seemed silly for Natalie to apologize, for her to feel any guilt over the way her emotions manifested here. If there were any place for tears to be shed, surely it was a cemetery.
And he knew about LOSS. Knew there was nothing he could say to give back what the little engineer had lost. Better that she felt whatever she needed to feel in that moment. The sim squeezed her a little tighter, trying to alleviate the crushing weight of ISOLATION that he thought she might be feeling. That he was so familiar with.

At least Octane had the sense to murmur his sassy response; the same could not be said for Revenant. The little engineer's face scrunched together and her eyebrows pinched with slight irritation. The two of them weren't in the worst trouble, but it was clear that Natalie's seemingly limitless patience was running out with these two. Probably on the account that she had been dealing with this nonsense all day now.
"I'm not even dignifying that question with an actual answer." Natalie scoffed at Revenant as her arms crossed over her chest. She stared down the seated simulacrum, using the brief moment she was taller than him to her advantage, but then she looked to Octane and shook her head. "Don't encourage him."
Then, finally, Natalie sighed and allowed some of her disapproving tension to leave her body. "I'm going to get food," She announced as she turned away from the pair on the floor and began to exit the lobby, "Please don't kill each other while I'm gone."
Tumblr media
Revenant scoffed. Easy to imagine why Silva might be opposed to the medbay. Lifeline was pretty good about working in STUBBORN SILENCE when she knew it was the best option, though; that would probably be the case if Silva were to turn up there now.
But, perhaps in part due to his stim usage, just as much as that usage could also be responsible for whatever was wrong - halfsuit seemed to make a recovery.
Revenant, meanwhile, listened but spent the time observing where his two outermost fingers had been left DANGLING, most of their wiring cut and only the damaged joints and couple remaining wires on one digit remaining. He debated ripping them off altogether, but for the moment, paused to gaze up at Natalie's standing and DISAPPROVAL.
"Why not?" The sim pressed, nonchalant. "I think it went well," he said airily. Stimbag lived. His own mood was improved. He doubted either of them felt much like picking up where they'd left off, unless Silva really wanted to brave making another threat. Wouldn't be the first time halfsuit had PUSHED HIS LUCK.

Natalie didn't notice the simulacrum moving until she felt cushioned metal wrap around her. Of course, she didn't resist. She fell right into Revenant's arms and allowed herself to seek shelter there. She turned herself into him a bit, leaning into him as tears finally broke free.
"I'm sorry," She whimpered out as her fidgeting hands left each other to hold onto one of the forearms wrapped around her, "I thought-- I thought I was ready for this."
The little engineer had prepped herself. Reaffirmed herself with positive thoughts and memories. Tried to think about how it was Revenant meeting her parents. But in the moment, she was face to face with her reality, and not her coping mechanisms.
This wasn't a meeting. There was no conversation to be had. There was just a void.
Tumblr media
Either the silence after that went on a little too long, or something in it changed. Either way, he looked to Natalie again, seeing immediately how she appeared SMALLER. Shrinking in on herself where she sat. Her anxious fidgeting.
Once, it would have had the effect of a wolf spotting a limping lamb separated from its herd.
Now Revenant only sought to cover her. Wrap her fragile state in his METAL. He shifted, moving over on his knees until he could sit behind the engineer with her framed between his legs, then slipping long arms around her, drawing her close like that as much as his unyielding frame would comfortably allow. The clothes he wore now at least smoothed some of his hard angles and softened the touch of cool alloy - made it easier to imagine there might be something warm, something COMFORTING, underneath.

Natalie's head twisted back to glance at Revenant as he groaned and gave his suggestion. Alarm immediately fell over her expression; the medbay?! She had not intended to shock them so harshly. Perhaps she was just used to overestimating the effect due to spending time with the sim?
Either way, it didn't matter, what mattered was making sure Octane was okay. Natalie shifted to press herself in closer to the Legend, prepared to support him and bring him onto his feet. But instead Octavio attempted to dismiss her, seemingly adamantly against going back to the medbay. She had her suspicions as to why.
"If you're not okay within these few seconds-- then you're not going to have a choice." Natalie said firmly but with rapidly growing concern. It wasn't until his chest seemed to rise and fall normally that the engineer's expression started to lessen in it's anxiety.
Natalie allowed her hand to slip from Octane's only when he released it. It wasn't like touch was something she disliked after all. The smaller Legend sighed as Octane laughed and seemingly returned to normal.
"Well, I'm glad you think so. You really had me worried for a second there." Natalie confessed tiredly before moving to stand up again. When she was back on her feet her hands moved to hold her hips, her comforting demeanor souring once more. "You two should not be putting me in a position where I think I need to tase you to stop you from hurting each other!"
Tumblr media
Golden glow flickered, remained lit only dimly. He was in NO HURRY to come back to himself or get up. But as his senses came back online, he could hear Octane's breath, quick and rasping. Wasn't like him.
Revenant turned his head, but he wasn't lying at a good angle to see much of the fallen daredevil. He could make out Silva beginning to get up, only to STAGGER and DROP, Natalie soon kneeling beside him worriedly. Fussing over him.
The sim groaned quietly, and not due to the ache in his circuits.
With a grunt, he slowly sat up, joints creaking. Regarded the blood spattered over the floor, briefly, and then his damaged hand, and finally the other two Legends. He didn't need the FANCY OPTICS of his new model to make an educated guess what was wrong. "Probably his heart," Revenant said. They could give it a minute to see if Silva's system settled on its own, otherwise - "Medbay's next door." The ship hadn't taken off yet, likely still waiting on some personnel.

The pair dropped as expected; hard and sudden. Their bodies anticipated pain, but not this kind. This wasn't a blade pulling apart fingers, or claws digging into flesh, this was hot electricity traveling through the nervous system. This was internal without breaking bones or bursting arteries.
Natalie observed the two on the ground, waiting patiently for the initial shock to subside and to see if they were done. Her eyes were stern, unrelenting, and prepared to lay down the law further-- until she heard the strangled gasp of her name from Octavio. Immediately, her heart sank. Had she pushed it too far? Was her intervention a drastic miscalculation?
She spared a swift glance to Revenant, making sure he wasn't having any adverse reaction. He seemed stunned, but wasn't unnecessarily sparking or twitching. Her attention then returned Octane as she fell to her knees at his side.
"Mon dieu, I'm sorry-- Are you okay?" Natalie asked with a bit of panic as her hands attempted to help Octane sit up.
Tumblr media
It was quick, smart, immediately moving to take up the knife in his opposite hand. Many of the Legends had trained themselves to some degree of ambidexterity - but not just anyone would have the coordination to SUCCESSFULLY grab for a knife tumbling from their other hand.
Similarly, not just anyone would start slashing where Revenant's metal hands were entangled with hair and flesh. But Silva wasn't known for self-preservation.
At first the blade only cut free one of the canvas straps of his chest, moments before cutting open Octane's own arm, too. But finally it caught on the comparatively vulnerable joints of the sim's two outermost fingers. REFLEXIVE PAIN prompted his hand to release Silva's wrist with a hissed growl.
He had no time to follow up before pausing at the thick electric CHARGE that seemed to build up in his every atom. Unmistakable. The simulacrum's processors kicked up in heated anticipation. Optics flickered. He didn't think to let go of his captive's hair, though, until Natalie's current had already reached him.
Octane was dropped, and mechanical frame CRUMPLED immediately to the ship floor, landing in a heavy clatter. A muted, skipping grunt left him. Claws twitched and seams sparked - but Revenant made no move to recover besides slowly rolling onto his back, BASKING in the leftover current that burned through his every wire and continued to twitch in his limbs.

The pair sat in what felt like comfortable silence for a while, though it was anything but for Natalie. Her mind was left to fester as her eyes stared at the engraved stone ahead. Happy memories that flooded her might've given her fond feelings of nostalgia, but here, at her parent's grave? It pulled apart her aching heart. Reminded her of how much she lost-- or never even had to begin with, in the case of her mother. She tried to breathe through it, like when they first sat down, but it wasn't as easy. Focusing on the breeze and birds was near impossible when such suffocating sadness made itself so prominent in her mind.
Her grief was a beast. It reared its ugly head at her and always threatened to swallow her whole. And no matter how hard Natalie tried to tame it, tried to contain it, she could not. She simply had to learn to live with the beast, and without her parents.
Natalie's head finally dipped, staring down at her lap instead. Delicate fingers moved to restlessly fidget with themselves; a telltale sign of unease within the engineer. And beneath her short, blonde locks, baby blues threatened to spill with tears, and her lower lip wobbled, unable to keep suppressing the feelings that bubbled inside.
Tumblr media
She almost certainly didn't have as many Nessies then as she did now. So at the least, Luc Paquette wouldn't have been OVERWHELMED with their presence in the house, if they were a reminder of the late wife. But it was strange to hear that he hadn't talked about the woman much with Natalie.
"Yeah," the sim agreed quietly, falling silent then. The two of them both knew that very well; they had both known a GRIEF which had CHANGED them. Revenant had seen grief do many different things to plenty of other people... Like what it had done to the guy who had killed him, for example.
Or what it had done to Loba. Shaping her. Fixing the trajectory of the whole rest of her life.

It seemed only one of the two Legends was even listening to her-- and that one was unfortunately at the mercy of the other. Whatever irritation Natalie was feeling was quickly cascading into fury as she watched the two men-- no, boys-- claw and swipe at each other. It was barbaric. It was stupid! There was no reason for this; the match was not that important.
If they wouldn't listen to words or reason, then Natalie had no choice but to speak the only language they seemed to understand right now. With a thrum and crackle, the pylon on her back turned on, generating an electrical current for the little engineer to manipulate. The energy quickly filled the lobby, prompting tiny hairs on their limbs to stand and for light objects such as pens and papers to lift.
"Enough!" The smallest Legend yelled as she finally pushed herself into the dispute. Electrically charged hands found themselves on their respective backs and chest, pushing them away from each other and sending a strong current into their bodies. It wasn't enough to maim or seriously injure, but it would certainly be enough for muscles and wires to seize.
Tumblr media
The gleam of a blade made his claws twitch and processors stir. Restless. HUNGRY, even after the match. It was vaguely IMPRESSIVE how quick halfsuit was able to draw his knife fresh out of the respawn chamber... Revenant would have underestimated Octane's reflexes at that moment otherwise. Now he knew better.
But he also knew Silva wouldn't get out of this unscathed. No matter how the other Legend chose to counterattack, he would be promptly PUNISHED for it.
Grip squeezed slowly tighter onto his captive's hair. Octane had scarcely finished his threat and Natalie not given the chance to finish her argument before the former's head was jerked back as the simulacrum's claws shot for Silva's wrist like a striking SERPENT, intending to twist his hand back and force the knife free of his grip just to prove who between them was in the better position to MAKE THREATS.

The speedster immediately had some kind of smart response readied for Natalie's suggestion. She knew it wouldn't be as simple as that; both were stubborn men. But before Natalie could try and reason with whatever Octavio's complaint was, Revenant interjected, verbally and physically.
"Hey!" Natalie exclaimed on her friends behalf, watching with annoyance of her own as Octane was dragged by his hair. "This-- This is not how you communicate!" She scolded as she stepped forward, unwilling to throw herself in the middle quite yet, but also not wanting to retreat or withdraw pressure.
Then, the situation escalated further as Octane pulled out his blade and made a threat. Now this was getting ridiculous. Natalie's expression twisted with her own irritation and disappointment. "Okay, both of you, knock it off!" She demanded loudly, "What does this accomplish? Seriously!"

He couldn't have cleared the jammers. Natalie certainly couldn't. A jump pad could have, but they hadn't had one, because stimbag had dropped it TOO EARLY. "If we had pushed with you, we would have been KILLED with you," Revenant snapped. Silva's squirming only made him shove the halfsuit HARDER against the wall. "Stuck in the jammers like bugs in a flytrap. That was what you looked like, before you were-"
He followed Silva's gaze to the other Legend. RELUCTANTLY dropped the daredevil, not without a low growl, only for Natalie's sake - but WATCHED the former's approach with still-seething vigilance.
Revenant would have allowed an apology.
But Octane's reaching to touch Natalie after having gotten her killed made anger burn SCORCHING through the sim's circuits again. He scoffed at Natalie's advice; stalked silently closer until reaching to grab Silva by the hair. "I know how to communicate," he responded, prying the halfsuit out of reach of Wattson with one hand and spreading the ready CLAWS of his other.
Same way he communicated with most everyone else.

Unsurprisingly, when Natalie finally entered the lobby, she found her two teammates entangled with each other, and not in a fun, dancing kind of way. The kind that suggested they were probably a few moments away from attempting to knock the other's lights out. Natalie's expression soured almost immediately; could they not behave themselves? Did everything really need to be resolved like this?
At the very least, it seemed Octavio had enough sense to peel away when she emerged. His energy immediately changed as well, clearly much more agreeable with her than with Revenant. It was enough to momentarily soften her resolve, but not enough to make Natalie drop the topic of what she had just walked in on.
"I'm okay." Natalie reassured first, sporting a small smile as a tender hand gently rested on the palm against her shoulder. "You don't have to apologize. Everyone has an off day; it's not like it was the last match ever."
Then, the soft smile disappeared and eyebrows creased together. Her hands settled on her hips, displaying somewhat stern disapproval, though it probably wasn't all that convincing. "You two need to learn how to communicate."
@simulamortem
Tumblr media
Other Legends filed in, passing by, most retiring immediately and wordlessly to their rooms, wracked with post-match EXHAUSTION. Even the respawn chamber wasn't known for leaving anyone feeling refreshed.
Revenant waited until there was ample space before dropping down SILENT behind Silva - snatching him by the back of the vest without any ceremony and shoving him hard against the nearest metal wall of the ship. "If you had stayed with your team, we would've won that match," the simulacrum SEETHED. "I TOLD YOU new girl had the jammers ready." And he had learned the hard way by now that their coverage and effectiveness wasn't to be underestimated.
They all would have been killed pushing, just as Silva had been. All they'd needed to do was wait for the enemy to come to them, sheltered by Natalie's pylon and bolstered by the web of her fences, but stimbag just couldn't WAIT.

Unlike the rest of her teammates, Wattson did not wake up with fire and contempt in her blood. Instead, she slowly stirred in her chamber, her baby blues attempting to make solid shapes in the stream of new light. She remembered the match clearly. The tension that she tried to mitigate, the eruption at the end. It was a complete and utter breakdown as a team. There was no communication, no effort made to coordinate and work together.
And Natalie felt the dread still lingering in her stomach. This wasn't over. Most of the Legends didn't know how to resolve anything without vitriol and flying fists. So, reluctantly, Natalie emerged from her chamber and went through the motions of the post match check up. She was in no hurry; she needed to tend to herself and they were grown, she wasn't their keeper.
Once she passed the screening, the little engineer moved towards the lobby of the ship, with a bottle of water in hand, intent on finding the simulacrum. She could maybe divert whatever war path he might be on. But instead, she heard the muffled voice of Octane upon her approach. Despite his voice being dampened, Natalie could still detect the irritated volume behind it. Her feet picked up the pace, intent on entering and seeing just what was going on.
@simulamortem
Octane had lost count of the number of times he'd woken up from respawn in a blind rage, but Revenant probably accounted for about ninety percent of them.
Fresh out of the medbay, he stalked toward the dropship, metal legs kicking up dust as he went, murmuring feverishly to himself in broken Spanish. That match had been winnable. But their usual combat rhythm, well-known by watchers of the games and participants alike, had entirely desynched and he could not for the life of him fathom why Revenant hadn't pushed with him on the final squad. Wattson had looked on in dismay as the two's bickering over strategy reached fever pitch and Octane had gone in alone.
He'd have to apologize to Natalie. He should have kept his temper in check regardless of whatever the hell Revenant had to say-- but the sim had been so overtly aggressive, Octane was almost offended.
Either way, he decided the reason for Revenant's comparatively unusual lack of cooperation didn't matter as he boarded the dropship and made a beeline to the middle of the lobby, turning around in circles furiously, eyes razing the darker cracks and corners for a sign of the simulacrum. He threw his hands in the air, beckoning in challenge.
"I know you're here Rev, stop hiding and show your fuckin' face!"

For once, the silence from the grave was probably a good thing. If her parents had been alive for such a meeting, it most likely would be going very differently. Never mind the fact that he is a simulacrum, but he is also a dangerous criminal. No responsible and caring parent would want that for their child.
With Revenant's question, Natalie's attention flicked to him, then back to the gestured Nessie. "I think that he liked that they made me happy." Natalie answered slowly, "But if he liked them? I don't know. He didn't really talk about mama much, or anything related to her."      "I think it might've made him too sad, or maybe angry. Or more like a complicated mix of the two." Natalie remarked empathetically and with some melancholy. "Grief does strange things to people."
Tumblr media
Revenant was comfortable with silence. The whole visit could have been made of it, and he would have been unbothered. He studied the photo Natalie had set out, and, more briefly, the plush toy.
He wasn't sure what else he'd expected.
Golden glow shifted for the other Legend when she spoke, watching her. The sim sat back, leaning on one hand with his other arm resting on the bent joint of his knee. SPECIAL. Natalie's father had been a science geek too, obviously; maybe he would have held some subdued fascination for meeting a simulacrum in person.
Though he couldn't imagine the guy would have approved of him anyway. No father would.
"Your old man like those things too?" Revenant ventured to ask quietly, nodding for the Nessie sat beside the photo.

When half the blanket was taken by the sim, Natalie glanced up with some surprise. Not necessarily from him helping her, but she was so used to doing all of this alone. His presence was very much wanted and appreciated, but it was new. Her expression soon slipped back to a small smile as they set the blanket on the grass.
Once the pair were seated, Natalie turned back to her little bag. She pulled out two more items and set them upon the tombstone, beside the flowers. One was a framed picture of her father, the other was one of the many Nessies Natalie had. Though, not the original; not the one actually from her mother. That was an item that never left her room.
The little engineer then just sat there for a moment. Listened to the wind brushing past the leaves, the birds chirping in the distance. Allowed for peace and tranquility to be found within her grief.
"Papa, mama..." Natalie started speaking after a slow breath. "It's good to see you. I've missed you." She then briefly glanced towards Revenant, then back to the tombstone. "Umm, this visit is a little different. I brought someone very special to me..."
Tumblr media
It looked like they were alone. Relaxing some with that knowledge, he followed Natalie down the path. The place was even smaller than he had thought it would be; the graves, too, were very modest.
He watched the engineer place her FLOWERS, and Revenant bent to place his beside them. White blossoms cradled in leafy greenery - nothing too extravagant. He regarded whatever Natalie produced from her bag, and realizing she meant to lay down a blanket, reached to take its opposite corners and help her lay it out flat on the grass.
Lowering then to join her on the blanket and take a seat. It was quiet and green here, with nearby birdsong carrying over the lawn. PEACEFUL.
