i was up until two am thinking about lan xichen and jiang cheng and i finally realised why im so in love with the idea that they are genuinely perfect for each other. STRAP IN.

to begin, they didn’t fall in love as teenagers or even ‘young’ adults. in my mind, by the time they actually start to look at one another as anything resembling romantic, they’re well into their 30s and they already have a foundation of respect and history. that’s such a major difference from basically every piece of media i’ve ever seen where the two people meet when they’re younger and are in love before they’re 25. oftentimes they’re literally teenagers, a direct example being wei wuxian and lan wangji. (granted, wei wuxian didn’t know his feelings consciously, but his heart belonged to lan wangji whether he knew it or not.) but jiang cheng and lan xichen are adults with their own lives and responsibilities and love at this point isn’t on their minds. jiang cheng tried it once (exactly one single time) and was rejected, lan xichen fell for someone who ended up being a crazy asshole, and neither of them wants to get back out there. love isn’t on their radar – until it suddenly is again.

second, i’m obsessed with the idea that they have just always been ships in the night. right person, wrong time sort of thing. they needed to both grow and change as people and all these events had to occur before they could look at each other and discover something they’d never considered through the many years they’ve known each other.

third, why it kills me when i imagine lan xichen calling jiang cheng “my heart” !!!!! is because the figurative implication is that jiang cheng, someone usually considered cold and angry and unmoving by everyone else, is to lan xichen someone who is instead warm and keeps him fucking breathing and sane, because he sees and gets to experience the jiang cheng that has always been there way deep down beneath the trauma and devastation. jiang cheng the guy who laughs like it’s been surprised out of him against his will and tries to hide his smiles bc he knows anything good can be taken away from him and refuses to give the universe more reason to cause him suffering, especially if he’s been given lan xichen, the first person to look at jiang cheng like That and with so much adoration!!!!!

in summary: they aren’t ‘soulmates’ like their brothers; they’re each other’s SECOND CHANCE!!!!! they give one another the love and companionship that they’d never expected for themselves and as a 20 year old who is convinced i won’t ever find my ‘person’ bc i haven’t yet, xicheng’s story is so comforting to me bc it’s a reminder that NO BITCH. YOU HAVE TIME. THE BEST IS YET TO COME. U DON’T HAVE TO FALL IN LOVE AT 20 AND BE WITH THAT PERSON FOREVER. LIFE DOESN’T END AT 25. u know????? and isn’t that all we want?? to be assured that we have TIME and loneliness isn’t permanent?? this went off the rails and is probably incoherent but i needed yall to know lan xichen and jiang cheng are god fucking tier and that’s on god.

When Jiang Cheng excuses himself to go to the bathroom, Wei Wuxian leans across the table, and hisses, “Are you out of your mind? How can you lie to him?” 

Lan Xichen lets out a deep breath, and feels his headache worsen. 

He’d come across Jiang Cheng’s coffee shop by chance, and had developed a little crush on the handsome barista. How was he supposed to stop himself from doing so? Jiang Cheng wears a look of mild irritation when he serves everyone, except Lan Xichen. Lan Xichen was charmed from the start. 

“I haven’t lied to Wanyin,” Lan Xichen tries to explain.

“He thinks you’re a school teacher!” Wei Wuxian whispers angrily. “You’re the head of a crime family! You throw bodies into the Caiyi river! Probably children!”

Lan Xichen raises his eyebrows. “Is that what you think Wangji does as well?” he asks, and Wei Wuxian slumps back into his own seat. “I am a teacher.” 

Wei Wuxian’s eyes narrow. “Do you guys have a whole school for triad kids?” he asks, horrified. “Oh my God?” 

Lan Xichen has truly underestimated Lan Wangji’s patience if this is what he has to deal with on a daily basis. “Wei Wuxian.”
