Types of Bags for Women for Every Occasion
Tumblr media
There is something that we are very clear about; the bag we carry is the one that fascinates us, the one that matches our style, the one that defines our personality and, sometimes, even our state of mind.
Here we go with the different types of bags that exist:
Types of Bags According to How They are Carried
Hand Bags
Its name says it all. It is a bag that is carried in the hand.
They can have short handles or no handles at all. Due to their nature, they tend to be small in size. They can be made of a wide variety of materials and countless designs.
Nowadays, most of these types of bags have an accessory strap to carry them hanging, but their reason for being is to carry them by hand.
Shoulder Bags
This is the most common bag and the most used. It is worn slung over one shoulder and they come in a wide variety of sizes and styles even though they are usually not very large. Above all, the most rigid designs, which would become uncomfortable to carry so much weight and stick their sharp corners everywhere.
Messenger Bags
This type of bag is worn across the body, with the shoulder strap for bags across the chest. They are quite comfortable bags and their name, in English, comes from the postmen. The people who were in charge of collecting the letters and taking them to their destination with a cross-chest bag that had a lid on top.
And so, due to the practical nature of this type of bag, it has become an essential fashion accessory.
Backpacks
These types of large bags are carried on the back. Normally, for daily use, to go on excursions or to go to school when we were little, it has become a fashion accessory that can be found in various materials, shapes and sizes. Although, yes, with straps to hang it on the back, even when we hang it only from one shoulder, or put it in front of us. One thing is the intention with which something is created and another is the way in which we use it.
We could integrate one more category: the bags that are tied to the waist, that is, the fanny packs or purses.
And, although, lately, they have become fashionable and there are models and designs of all kinds, with very cool designs in any style, in all kinds of materials, adding them as another category of bag may be too much.
We have already integrated backpacks that are not exactly a bag and fanny packs could be more of a cousin, however, they deserve to be mentioned.
Thus, once we have established these more general categories of the types of bags by the way they are carried, we go through all the kinds of bags that can be found according to their shape.
Types of Bags According to Their Shape
Hobo Bags
This bag is characterized by its trapezoid shape with rounded corners; they have a crescent shape from top to bottom. In addition, they are usually not rigid bags; They are usually made of flexible materials, which is why they are comfortable bags that can be adapted to any style.
It is normal that they are large and maxi bags. As a curiosity, its name comes from a reference to the vagabonds. That typical piece of cloth tied to a stick in which they carried their few belongings. And it is true that the way in which the strap is attached to the body of the bag, makes its fall remind us of this type of bundle that homeless people used to carry.
Bowling Bags
The name of this class of bag is due to the bags in which the bowling balls are carried. Pretty typical of Americans. They are semi square bags with rounded sides and a normally flat base.
It is usually carried hanging by its handles on the forearm. However, there are countless models; with short, long or shoulder straps.
They are usually large in size, because, as the name suggests, this type of bag refers to the bags used to store bowling balls and these are not exactly small, however, they exist in a mini version.
Doctor Bags
In the old days, when people got sick, it was typical for doctors to go to their homes to visit them. And these doctors carried a briefcase with them, which is what gives this type of bag its name (I'm sure you've seen it more than once in movies). They tend to be rigid and have short handles.
Flap Bags
These bags are characterized by having a large flap that covers it completely or, at least, half. They have more elongated shapes than the rest.
Frame Bags
This is a kind of classic bag. And to know which one it is, you just have to remember when your grandmother took out her purse to give you some coins, since the main characteristic of this bag is its mouthpiece closure, just like that of our grandmothers' purse. They are usually large models, with handles, although they come in all sizes, materials and shapes, both rigid and flexible.
Tote Bags
This kind of bag is the perfect bag for shopping. They are large capacity bags. They are usually giant, trapezoid-shaped and with two handles, long enough to be able to move your arms easily. They are usually made of flexible fabrics and it is the type of bag where we usually carry half a house and that is what it is intended for.
Satchel Bags (Wallet Bags)
This type of bag is the one that looks like the old children's wallets. That typical wallet with the buckled flap that was used in the past to go to school and that has now become essential as a fashion accessory. Who was going to say it! In addition, today there is a boom in mini models of this style, which give us a retro and sophisticated air.
Crossbody Bags (Shoulder Bags)
They are bags with long handles to carry over the shoulder or cross-body type. And, actually, there is not a big difference between this bag and the crossbody style ones. It is so that we learn one more name in English and show off our fashion vocabulary, although if at a given moment we say that what we are wearing is a shoulder bag, everyone will understand us.
Envelope Bags
They are handbags whose size ranges from medium to tiny. They are characterized by having a shape that is like an envelope for letters.
Shopper Bags or Shopping Bags
This is the classic large bag, with handles and various interior pockets. They are large capacity bags, perfect for shopping as their name suggests or as beach bags.
