it is harmful to the original author and is an unacceptable practice in any and every capacity. behavior like this drives original authors away from actually writing and providing the quality content that you so crave for.

the way fanfiction is posted on this site and others may give people the impression that because it's free, it's free to use. it isn't. i'm deciding to share it with you for free. just because i've made the choice to do that doesn't mean i'm GIVING it to you. i own it. i'm letting you read it, but i own it. you don't have the right to do anything with it at all without asking me for permission first. it's my property, my intellectual property. do not repost, translate, or do anything with my writing or any other person's writing without them giving you explicit permission.

It's never ok to repost a fic.

I can't believe I'm making this post but just so we're clear, it's never ok to repost another person's work or art. Doesn't matter if you give "credit". Doesn't matter if you take a fic from tumblr to post it on wattpad because "you liked it", doesn't matter if you liked a piece of fanart and wanted to post it on twitter for your followers to see. It's never ok to take an artist's work and repost it, whether credit is given or not.

If a writer or an artist want their art to be on a platform, they will post it there themselves.

If you really like something and want to share it, share a link to the original post. DO NOT REPOST IT.

Tumblr's terms of services include this sentence: You retain ownership you have of any intellectual property you post to Tumblr.

It's also a known fact that intellectual property laws apply to fanfiction. Just thought this should be out there.

just in case having a disclaimer in my masterlist wasn't enough, i'm adding it to my pinned. but even if a writer doesn't have it on their blog, it's common fucking sense and human decency to ASK for permission before doing anything with their work. you need their explicit consent and if they say no then it's a no.

do not repost and/or translate anyone's work. i don't know how else to explain copyright infringement but when you make any type of content it's automatically YOUR intellectual property. it came from YOUR brain. no one is allowed to take that from you.

i’m sorry but with all the plagiarism going around i just have some stuff to say.

we all already know it’s fucked up to plagiarize and steal. but what’s irking me even more is how these people react when they’re caught.

i don’t give a fuck if you “liked a story so much you wanted to share with more people.” okay, the reblog option is right there. i know you have a tumblr account, because many authors use the option to hide their blogs and accounts from non-users, literally to prevent plagiarism.

i don’t give a fuck if you “asked all the authors for permission.” okay, show us the proof of that. because a majority of the authors you stole from not only have it prominently displayed on their blog that they do not allow reposts or translations under any circumstances—but they also oftentimes say it directly on the posts you’re stealing from. i highly doubt that you got permission from everyone if that’s their policy.

and lastly, i don’t give a fuck if you’re sorry. because if you were really sorry, you wouldn’t have done it in the first place. most of these plagiarism riddled books have at least 20+ chapters. that’s 20 times you ignored boundaries, 20 times you chose to disrespect an author, and 20 times you could have decided against being the scum of the fucking earth and stealing shit.

take your half-assed “apologies” and shove them up your fucking hole. no one forgives you. no one likes you. delete your accounts built off of stolen work and lies and don’t expect to be welcomed back if you for some reason decide to show your face here again.

and if you want to continue stealing?

well. one day you’ll wake up and realize there’s no one left to steal from, because you drove everyone away with your lying and plagiarizing. and you will be left with your stolen stories and realize that you are the problem, and no one will feel sorry for you.

How to discover if your stories have been reposted

STEP 1. Pick a short (unique if possible) sentence from one of your stories.

STEP 2. Go to Google.  

STEP 3. Paste the copied text into the search bar.  

STEP 4. PUT QUOTES AROUND IT.

Google will now run a search that is looking for THAT EXACT PHRASE with the words in THAT ORDER.  

Here’s an example, from one of my stories (all valid results – 2 fic recs, and then the original story chapter link):

so, in the topic of translated fanfics in wattpad, i found this book & this book with a bunch of fanfics translated to spanish. they're on different accounts but they're the same person

so far i have only been able to recognise two pieces by @tasteleeknow (i'm at work and i can't deep dive into the thing)

this behavious is absolutely disgusting and disrespectful. i have reached out to the person but... yeah. don't be like this people
