Long story short- I have a hefty goal of reading 100 books this year! Everytime I read fanfiction lately I can't help but feel guilty because it's not a "real book" that I can count towards my goal (although I have definitely read fanfictions better than actual published work...that's a different conversation)

Content: Comfort, recovery whump, scars/injuries, past captivity.

Fresh out of captivity, Whumpee has dozens upon dozens of scars to go with the vivid memories of what happened to them. On nights where they can't sleep, they find comfort in sitting with Caretaker in their bed and telling the story behind each scar as if they were bedtime stories.

What brings them the most comfort is watching the looks on Caretaker's face as they listen to Whumpee tell their stories. Rather than judgement, they admire them with a sense of pride. Gently stroking the faded ones on their arm as they listen to every word.

i want more fantasy stories where the main character has a disability (mental or physical) and it is a major challenge.

i want a story where the protagonist goes on a quest into the Fae Courts and also has to keep taking her meds, counting the days til she’s out with increasing dread.

i want a story where the protagonist struggles with learning a magical power not because it’s the “wrong one” but because they have ADHD and can’t focus on it.

i want a story where the protagonist is constantly gauging what actions will and won’t be worth the physical toll and recovery time.

i want a story where the protagonist has a flare up and can’t do something because of it and it matters in the long run

i want a story where the characters disability is actually disabling and they still win.

currently thinking about a universe where having your own whumpee(s) is like. a widespread thing. and i want to dump my train of thought somewhere so here you go

stronger/more durable whumpees are worth more because they last longer — maybe they’re used as lab rats for whumper to test a new torture device or weapon

on the other side of the spectrum, weaker whumpees are worth less — maybe they’re usually bought in bulk

whumpees being bought and given to family members as gifts during the holidays (like a dog — pet whump possibilities??)

online quizzes telling you what kind of whumpee would be best for you (again, like a dog)

immortal/super-powered whumpees being auctioned off (i have the mental image of whumpee being in a cage in front of a crowd like in that one jurassic park movie idk)

whumpees being used as currency; whumpers exchanging whumpees for food/resources/weapons

whumpees being labeled as “new” or “used”

I also have chronic pain, and lots of *fully conscious medical procedures* because im allergic to most anesthetics 😑 so here's my addition to this list:

1. Silence - Usually you think of screaming or crying out during acute severe pain, but some people (me) do the opposite and lose all ability to make sound. I just kind of silently flounder for air, and usually it takes a solid minute before the nurse or doctor even realizes i'm silently screaming (sometimes the heart rate monitor is the only way they thought to check on me). While very traumatic for me, its great for whumpy stuffs. Physical pain plus the terror of "oh my god no one can hear me."

2. Heart - Pounding in the ears or rapid pulse are common for pain, but the heart under extreme stress will also throw PVCs or "skipped beats." They feel like your heart has seized up and just stopped dead for a few seconds. You can't breathe. It's panic inducing.

3. Stoicism - So when I'm in pain, instead of my stoicism breaking or cracking and all the emotions flooding through, my subconscious actually doubles down without me even realizing or controlling it. I suppose its like compartmentalizing. You completely detach. Its gotten me in some trouble before too - I've been in shock and still able to converse and follow directions, but once I'm out of it I have no memory of any of the events.

That's all I can think of for now, but yeah! lmk if y'all want some more ideas 😳

Physical Signs of Extreme Pain: Weird Edition 👽❤️‍🩹🤷‍♀️

I've made some pain reference posts over the years, but apart from passing out from pain, I haven't gotten much into the just plain weird shit the body does when it's really hurting. Time to fix that.

Fireflies: Sure, seeing spots is a thing. Black spots on the edge of your whumpee's vision, getting closer in slow pulses when they're having trouble breathing and struggling to hang onto consciousness. But when they just straight up hurt, your whumpee can get weird little floating things that flash like fireflies or tiny pieces of metallic silver confetti drifting around. In my experience, they've been linked to effort--they tend to either start or multiply fast when I stand up or otherwise try to move when I'm in unusually intense pain.

Shivering: Not because your whumpee is cold or in shock, but because their muscles are taut to the point of strain (because the body responds to pain with muscle tension), and when those muscles can't tighten further, they shake. It's the same mechanism that makes your fists shake if you're angry and clenching them past the point they can reasonably be clenched, just all over.

Teeth Chattering: No, seriously. In my experience, it mostly tends to happen as the shivering escalates, but I've had it just start up on its own when I get slammed with a spike in pain out of nowhere like cramps, or if I'm late taking a dose of my meds. I hate it because in the first place it's annoying, in the second place it's very noticeable, and in the third place I have absolutely no control over it. Clenching my teeth doesn't stop the muscles from trying to make them chatter, it just makes them (even more) sore. Also it's hard to talk, and I bite my cheek and tongue. A lot.

Ear Stuff: A ring that your whumpee feels as much as they hear. It's not a tone like a lot of tinnitus is, it's more like the pressure-changing "sound" you'll get as a plane takes off. And it feels like it's physically inside their ears, like someone has taken the world's heaviest, smallest ball-bearing and stuck it in their ear canals and it's trying to pull them down into and through the floor.

The Air Hurts: Your whumpee gets an all-over feeling like someone pressing lightly on a bruise, and the more they think about it, concentrate on it, the more their brain becomes irrationally convinced that the air has become dense around them and that's what's causing it. Because nothing is there, there is no external pressure, it's just pain signals behaving in a goofy way, and their brain is scrambling for an explanation. They might subconsciously pull their hands or other exposed skin into their clothing, or hunch over and pull everything in toward their chest to "protect" their skin from the air around them.
