Usually, his mother was not so negative. It was very unusual and rare to hear her speak this way, which worried Loki even more. His grip around her hands tightened briefly in a tender squeeze. “I know, Mother, but why speak like this, all of a sudden? Allt er í lagi, móðir. Asgard has never known such a peaceful era and here you are, worrying about that...”

“Fear not,” he replied, noticing the way she shifted away from him although he had not made a move to touch her. “I will not harm you. I am here to help.” Strange words coming out of the mouth of the God of Lies but she was a child and children should be protected. “My name is Lucky.” To children, he always introduced himself as Lucky, instead of Loki, as it was a much funnier name to them and allowed them to relax around him. “What is yours?”

Another growl escaped the wolf’s chops. Whether it was the age — despite being the youngest Odinson — or a shift in his character itself, Loki felt slightly more protective of his son. Unknowingly, he had always felt some kind of affection for every one of his children but a little bit more towards Vali as he felt the closest to him. And considering they were absolutely not close, it was a big concept. What he did not like hearing was that Sigyn probably did not care about her last son. No matter how much she blamed him, or how cold she was towards him, she still loved him. Loki knew how much love she still held for him, it was oozing from her every time she talked about him. Although unable to comprehend that degree of love, the God of Mischief admired it. A mother’s love was neverending after all. That, at least, he knew. He still felt it from Frigga. 

“You are but a kid. Do not lecture adults, even less your parents,” he replied. If Vali thought he was not being noticed, he was very wrong. Sensing something was wrong with his child, the wolf turned his big head and with the tip of his black snout, pushed him up, helping him on his back. He could not possibly reaffirm his Aesir form just yet, since he had swallowed an entire soldier without even chewing him. His magic simply refused to obey him in this case. Once his son was settled on him, with a lot of difficulties, the wolf stood back up very slowly, trying his best not to give a too brutal impulse on his back legs, and started walking back out of the battlefield. He walked carefully, putting his large paws down between the corpses of the Asgardian soldiers, respectfully not stepping on any of them. His body was slowly swaying from left to right in a soothing rythm. “To the palace,” he replied simply. “You need medical care. I can only provide you with so much.” His canine body was warm, a lot warmer than usual, coming from the healing spell he was gradually casting at Vali. 

Loki struggled finding anything to say to Vali. They were not close and had barely nothing in common. They were practically strangers to one another. However, the Trickster knew he had to keep the little one awake until they reached the palace where he would be taken care of by their healers. 

“Hey, Vali,” he called. “I had never seen you fight before. You are not bad,” he added. Giving compliments, for him, was almost as improbable as being nice. Not bad was the best he could do but Vali had been impressive on the battlefield, despite his young age. In fact, he was very much like him at the time. Despite not being fond of battles, he was an expert combatant against his will. Nothing and nobody resisted him and was he to be stabbed or hurt, it was because he had a plan. It was obviously not Vali’s case, at the moment. A rolling sound made by the creature indicated a laughter. “You still have a lot to learn. Maybe it would not be a bad idea to train with your uncle... And I mean Thor. Baldr would probably just get you killed.”

“Accio?” he frowned, looking up at her. His mind raced. He had already heard that word somewhere, apart from in the obvious Latin dictionnary that must have hid somewhere in his library, but where? Staring for a moment at Darcy, he hummed. “Oh. I remember,” he beamed. “It’s from that fantasy novel you love, isn’t it?” He grinned at her. “Unfortunately, we don’t have any tricks here to find lost objects so... I’ll have to dive in!” He looked down at the quilt and his smile got a little less bright, a little more melancholic. “Oh that...” He leaned and picked it up, not even realizing Darcy’s guess had been right and the board game was indeed under it. “Mother knitted this for me when I was a kid. Thor’s is red and Baldr’s is blue.”

“It’s a couple thousand degrees below absolute zero,” he explained. “But worry not, we won’t freeze to death. Make sure you keep that coat at all times.” Giving her a tender smile, he gently rubbed his knuckles over her cheekbone before running his hand under her chin, making her tilt her head back to give her another kiss. Finally, he let go of her except for her hand and turned away to face the immensity of the planet. “What do you think?” he asked with a bright and proud smile, slightly cocky too. The only thing that could be frightening for a human was the deafening silence. Nothing made a sound in the universe. To Loki, it was not even a slight bother, on the contrary, he loved the silence.
