i miss it when network tv looked kind of grainy & warm & intimate. everything’s just shades of blue now

it's a slow burn thing, by the way. the regeneration smell and even's dislike of it.

because here's how it starts: one day, the doctor pops into the tardis, and they were pretty sure he'd just left, left them behind because they're running a fever and they have to man the fort (<- not pass out because they're overexerting themself. but the doctor has learned that giving them a little job to complete is better than telling them to rest.), but here he is. he's smiling a lot, but something feels wrong about it and he's always leaning on something. he asks them how they feel, and they let him put his hand against their forehead, and when he's done that, he keeps it there, pets their hair while they watch him. his hand smells weird. it's like lighter fluid, maybe, or like the air after lightning strikes, or maybe it's like the beach when the tide has pulled back too far but the sand hasn't dried yet. he tells them they're a good person, (they aren't sure what that means and they're unsettled by it) and he's not angry with them (which scares them a little, because what if he's lying and they've done something wrong they can't remember), and then he realizes he's spooking them and leaves it be. gives them new beads to put on their next friendship bracelet, like he knows the one they're wearing will break soon, and that's not much of a leap, they're cheap and break easily and even replaces them with enthusiasm.

though, these beads are prettier than usual. they feel smoother, minutely heavier in the hand, they glitter. they come ready to be strung together, little holes drilled in their centers and waiting. a perfect gift. the perfect gift, really.

the doctor hugs them before he leaves again. he smells wrong.

but when he comes back a few hours later, he's smiling still, in the right way, and when even hugs him again and buries their nose in his shoulder, he smells right, too. so everything is fine.

and then, years - depending how you measure it, but by most counts, including even's own - later, the master turns into someone else in front of Even's eyes, and their TARDIS smells like change for weeks, and they hate every second of it. and that's how the story ends.
