DISCUSSION OF FULL GAME SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT

this silly doodle was inspired by how I couldn't help but wonder about their relationship or lack thereof in those years where chachamaru was living with her father

even if raicho didn't think much of her then... the performance of etiquette, the ceremonial significance of family ties, these are things that he likes, right? he'd at least try and say hello to this young relative even if she's a bit weird and closed off and always looks dead inside from Fatal Sensory Overload. he couldn't have expected that she'd become an absolute gremlin in the present day

yet despite all their future bickering, they are also by far the closest of the four kanto generals. raicho oscillates so casually between aggressive exasperation and just chatting with her frivolously. even at the races, it doesn't take long for him to accept her presence and just co-commentate lol. If nothing else, he seems incredibly Used to having her around

chachamaru too, for all her cynicism and scheming, actually goes very easy on him in many instances. even when it seems like she's mocking him or twisting the knife (which she is), she's also being far more generous than she has any obligation to be, spelling everything out so that he really understands his situation. obviously she struggles to feel close to or safe with anyone, but at the very least she's had a better experience with moriuji's branch of the family than with her own. by her own admission, she has a soft spot for raicho and how easy he is to see through

Which is why it's sooo funny that in every major ending of the final route, one of them will kill the other. in either timeline, he doesn't hesitate much in considering her an enemy. the composure of rokuhara's strongest musha, sure, but also how that vanity-laden bubble of Family that even his inconvenient nephew is under the protection of can be revoked from her so swiftly. but it doesn't suprise her... :(
