SELVEDGE RUN Nº1 / July 2015
Tumblr media
vimeo
Selvedge Run is a trade show for men’s clothing, shoes and accessories. Our focus is upon brands with a strong affinity with craft. These brands reflect the character of heritage clothing in cuts, material and production methods, and are complimented by contemporary brands which innovate with class and distinction.
Our exhibiting and invited brands reject industrial, mass production and, instead of following the tyranny of cheap and disposable fashion, they strive to create value and longevity.
Our brands are innovators, not only in the field of clothing, but also in the worlds of gastronomy, culture and mobility, and try to find alternatives to the throw-away approach of modern consumerism. This is what the Selvedge Run stands for.

Master Tailor Checchino Fonticoli Reminisces About Itinerant Tailors in Abruzzo, Italy
Tumblr media
vimeo
Italians Nino Corvato, Joe Centofanti and Checchino Fonticoli are master tailors who have spent a lifetime perfecting the skills necessary to construct flawless custom-made suits for their clients in New York City, Philadelphia and Penne, Italy, a fascinating process broken down step-by-step in MEN OF THE CLOTH. Now in the twilight of their career, they fear that their Old World knowledge will vanish with them. Enter Joe Genuardi, a tailoring apprentice who reflects the resurgence of popular interest in artisanal craftsmanship as an alternative to corporate mass production, providing hope for the future of this craft.
Filmed over the course of 11 years, MEN OF THE CLOTH unravels the mystery of their artistry and reveals how their passionate devotion to their Old World craft is akin to a religion. MEN OF THE CLOTH has screened at theaters and art museums around the world. (It has a 9.3 rating on IMDB.com.) The DVD with Director’s Commentary and special features is available at: https://ift.tt/1dTqEOI
“… a deeply moving narrative, a story that is filled with a deep lust for life…. Director Vicki Vasilopoulos has masterfully crafted this film, not unlike how her subjects have masterfully crafted their garments.” — The Arts Fuse
“We get to feel the love of the men for their job and we understand just how special handmade suits are…. You will feel a loss at the notion that their way of life is fading from existence. I love films that make you feel and this one does in spades.” — Unseen Films blog
“A small but beautiful documentary…Free from static talking heads, Vasilopoulos casually and quietly observes the tailors at work, allowing the audience to see their skill first hand. While they work, they muse candidly about their upbringing and training, never dwelling too long on any one thing, with each word, each anecdote carefully placed like stitches on a lapel.” –- Boulder Weekly (Colorado)
“At a time when American shoppers seem all too happy to buy mass-produced, inexpensive and ultimately disposable clothing, MEN OF THE CLOTH celebrates the master tailors who slowly, lovingly, patiently produce custom-made suits one hand-stitch, pin, chalk mark, measurement and fitting at a time…. it’s uplifting to watch these men and a small pool rising in the ranks in Italy.” — Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (USA) (3 1/2 stars out of 4)
“A captivating tale of an art in both remission and resurgence, MEN OF THE CLOTH is a journey across the globe unifying craftsmanship and style…. Dynamic, emotional, and inspiring, it was truly an experience.” — A & H Magazine
“As it is far from today’s gloss and glam of the runway and transient trends of fashion forward movements, MEN OF THE CLOTH leaves something truly honest and striking…. MEN OF THE CLOTH provides great insight into the dedication these masters have for their craft and general disregard for the popular consensus that they are wasting their time and efforts on over looked details in today’s fast paced society. As their story sharing gives the majority of the film its weight, much credit needs to be attributed to the camera and editing. It is literally like you are there, right in the middle of their dedicated design process so organic that you forget you are watching a documentary and instead standing shoulder to shoulder as they retell their passion for perfection which consumes them.” — Art Smitten on SYN Radio 90.7 (Melbourne, Australia) Likes: 0 Viewed:

Pokémon loves Fashion at PITTI UOMO
Tumblr media
vimeo
About the Work PITTI IMMAGINE UOMO (hereafter called PITTI UOMO) is a men’s fashion trade fair that is held twice a year in January and June in Firenze, Italy. WOW displayed a new installation at yoshiokubo’s runway show, where he introduced his new collection, and in Villa Vittoria, close to the main assembly hall. In this 92nd edition, yoshiokubo and the world famous Pokémon brand formed a tag team. WOW developed and produced an installation that formed a bridge between yoshiokubo’s world view and Pokémon that conveyed respect for fashion.
The runway show was held at an abandoned station (former Leopolda station), and 5 giant triangular pyramids of 6.6m, 5.2m, 3.3m with mirror coating were installed there. By projecting images on the bottoms of these pyramids, the runway was bathed in seemingly infinite reflected images like a kaleidoscope. Following the collections theme of the “Arts & Craft Movement”, elaborately drawn stages of the fashion creation process include the braiding of cloth, the dying of cloth, and the creation of textiles, as well as graphical representations of Pokémon blending with the world of fashion.
There were also 4 pyramids of 3.5m installed at the Villa Vittoria, close to PITTI UOMO’s main assembly hall. Much like at the runway show venue, visitors were greeted by an edgy installation made by yoshiokubo, Pokémon, and WOW.

Fashion English: My style. Me as an art person.
Tumblr media
vimeo
“I love uniforms! Because if there’s nothing there, clothes are certainly not going to make the man” from the book The Philosophy of Andy Warhol
Since being a child I have been thinking that clothes play a great role in people’s lives. Clothes have a lot to tell you about. I’ve enjoyed altering since school. Whatever my mother bought me nothing was ideal for me, so I altered everything with joy. I’ve always stood out from the crowd and really loved it. For the moment I don’t really pay that much attention to the way I’m dressed. But in fact I’m only saying it, hahah, because everything that I have in my wardrobe was whether altered by me or done by me. A lot depends on music I listen to. I’ve always loved to mix styles, so to speak genres of the clothing. Sometimes I even get irritated when I see a person dressed in a single theme, no matter if it’s classics or a sportive style. My image always expresses protest. I absolutely love skinny jeans. Still can’t get myself male pantyhose/tights, hahah I admire clothing both for women and men. I love high heeled shoes as much as flats. I like old clothing: whether they were bought at the flea market or found in my parents’ wardrobe or just totally worn out by me. It’s’ cool when you can give a second life to old things. I have a habit to find stuff or just receive as a present, whether it’s brand new or even worn out. I like when my clothes are filled with some spirituality, remind me of pleasant moments, then they become even more precious. But I never feel sorry for things that I lose; I believe that it means that I definitely will find something new. I can’t relate my style to any of those which are known today in our society. It seems that I’m unique, hahah. Likes: 4 Viewed:
