Reading a book about slavery in the middle-ages, and as the author sorts through different source materials from different eras, I am starting to understand why so many completely fantastical accounts of "faraway lands" went without as much as a shrug. The world is such a weird place that you can either refuse to believe any of it or just go "yeah that might as well happen" and carry on with your day.
There was this 10th century arab traveller who wrote into an account that the fine trade furs come from a land where the night only lasts one hour in the summer and the sun doesn't rise at all in the winter, people use dogs to travel, and where children have white hair. I don't think I'd believe something like that either if I didn't live here.

Smokey Moods
Eddie wakes up on January 1986 being able to see weird wispy smoke around people's heads. Takes him a few days to realise they're emotions. Sees the bright aurora borealis of colour when he walks into the school, shifting and changing with teenage mood swings.
But once it settles and his vision sharpens, he can pin point the different internal emotions of people.
Only to find several dark spots in the colour. The darkest coming from some unlikely places like Nancy Wheeler, Chrissy Cunningham and that Mayfield skateboard kid.
It's the worst though when he walks into family video and there's just darkness only to be greeted with a chirpy "Hey there how can I help you," from the literal black cloud Steve Harrington.
It takes him by surprise, the sheer misery he's getting from that black smoke in contrast with Harringtons chipper if slightly bitchy attitude.
But as Eddie snipes back at him, slightly flirty because he can't help play gay chicken with jocks and freak them out a little, he's again surprised when a pink little tendril taints the darkness, breaks through it like dawn on a new day.
Eddie comes back every day that he can to make that wisp of pink grow into a cloud.

i feel like seriously describing junji ito's horror works as simply "wouldn't it be fucked up if this happened" is dumb because it's such a vague description that most other horror works can also be described as that. For example:
"Wouldn't it be fucked up if your house suddenly started creating new rooms and changed its dimensions on you?" (House of Leaves, specifically The Navidson Record)
"Wouldn't it be fucked up if the doors, windows, and your parents suddenly disappeared out of nowhere?" (Skinamarink)
"Wouldn't it be fucked up if a clown in a sewer started killing kids?" (It)
among others.
Not to mention, most of Ito's works do have deeper meaning to them, specifically targetting japanese culture. This video touches on his shorter works, but even his larger works have metaphorical meaning.
Junji Ito describing his mindset on writing Gyo as "man it would suck if sharks had legs" is real funny, but it's also critiquing Japan's war crimes in WWII; the origin of the "legs" being from World War II when the Imperial Japanese Army was trying to create biochemical weapons cannot be a coincidence. Hellstar Remina is about a hostile alien planet, but it's also an allegory of fans turning on a girl because of something beyond her control, reminiscent of idol culture. Hell, even Uzumaki, probably one of his greatest "WTF" horror works, is also about a pair of teenagers being unable to escape their hometown, unable to expand their horizons in the outside world. they just keep going in circles, unable to escape.
I don't know, at this point describing Ito's works only being "wouldnt it be fucked up if this thing happened" is starting to feel like "the curtains are blue because the author likes the color blue" but like. for horror

So we all know that Tumblr is US-centric. But to what degree? (and can we skew the results of this poll by posting it at a time where they should be asleep?)
Reblog to increase sample size!

at the moment there's a French exchange student in my 8th grade and on Monday he gave me corrections after my lesson. at first I was like: "I would have never dared to do that!" second reaction was: "nice- gonna get even better". It was small things for example we are just doing the tâches ménagères and in our book it's written "mettre le couvert" and "ranger le lave-vaisselle" and I didn't think about it and of course took these words. He told me they are okay but he'd rather use "mettre la table" and "vider le lave-vaisselle". I was like: thanks! and for today I had put together a revision vocabulary sheet and wrote down both expressions: the one from the book and his because of course I believe a French native speaker more than the book.
And after class he came to me and said: "I really appreciate you including my remarks" and it made me feel like: yes what I do is important.
Anyways what I got from this is: I could have been annoyed/ angry about this, but I chose to take it as a new learning experience ! I'm surely not gonna forget these words :D
