—  seunghoon said, not knowing why that information was important enough to be shared, but anyway, people at that school were all sorts of weird, so this didn’t surprise him.

“i’m a… what’s the january one? i have no clue.” though he should know, since his years living in the west showed that people loved that zodiac thing, making comparissons and compatibility tests.

and then it hit him.

that was lame, even in seunghoon standards, but screw it, it was too funny not to say it and seunghoon never missed a chance to be funny (or lame). “you’re a libra bro,” he said, feeling stupid. “you’re my libro.” he started laughing because that was lame, but what could anyone expect from him? exactly.

the weight of his thick reading glasses shuffled above the bridge of his slightly hooked nose. he crinkles his brows as he reads the outcome of a very impromptu google search, per sowon’s request - september 24, 1997. libra. compatibility with november 11, 1998 - scorpio? three zebra-striped hearts and four pink chili peppers. what.

they’ve gotten their fortunes read together, sure; that much was normal for couples. but then again, they weren’t the average love story, nor the average characters breaking the fourth wall within the most average school there could be in a television drama. but even then, as he mutters his zodiac out loud, trying to make some sense of his identity, and gets a pun thrown back at him in reward, jaehyun can only blink back in return.

another google search. libra and capricorn and aquarius, the background of the other male’s laughter completely drowning out the mobile website’s music of what the word “bedazzle” probably sounded like, if it could be represented audibly. two leopard-printed skulls and five red chili peppers. what.

short nails clatter against his cellphone’s power button as jaehyun tosses the large device unceremoniously above him and onto the cushion of his soft sheet covers. his jean-covered knees and bare chest rub against the carpeted floor, his body curling once again to shamelessly have at it, in another attempt at fitting his tall figure underneath his bed. he pats the ground of his room, hands wandering aimlessly, closing around the emptiness of air and just overall disappointment. it isn’t long until the vibrations of another round of messages from sowon travel to his skin, through the sixth sense he’s seemed to develop towards his communication with her. although this time, he’s surprised, and his head suffers for it, bumping roughly against the bed frame, and causing him to let out a drawn-out hiss, one hand reaching to blindly grab the phone so that he doesn’t have to move his body from his current position of recovery.

but he isn’t ready! the glow of the screen’s light illuminates the naked expanse of his neck, and he sighs.

he groans. tilting his head back with closed eyes, he’s rewarded with another collision with the wood against his skull. immediately, and in exasperation, he slides himself right on out, only to helplessly sit on his haunches and stare at his girlfriend’s last text for a long while, eventually typing  —

he’s a mess. his head drops down, and he shuts his eyes again. why is he such a fucking mess?

huffing, jaehyun’s breath is cool in contrast to the warmth of his skin, sobering enough to rid the slight ache in his head and encourage a small blush to tint his pale cheeks. he needs a shirt. oh, god, is she almost here? oh god.

pulling his figure from the floor, he tugs his pants up as he shifts towards the chair of his desk, fingers slipping its hold on the simple button-up he had tossed over it earlier, before he had taken his shower. the guy was typically always as he wanted to appear — nice, collected; but while he quickly dresses himself, it undoubtedly was the other way around — then again, he always got like this around her. he was good at not showing it often, or so he thought, but the occasional button that went through the wrong hole was sign enough to indicate that when it came to sowon, this boy was absolutely whipped. or maybe this time, because it was the prospect of facing her frustrations already so early into their planned meeting. he didn’t know.

he moves on to button the cuffs of his sleeves when vibrations tingle against his back pocket, where he had absentmindedly shoved his phone, and he doesn’t wait for another before he’s already opening the door to his dorm and greeting the love of his life with a soft smile and apologetic eyes, peeking through the slightly wet strands of his bangs.

“ i promise i should have it, baby. you didn’t need to come so soon. ”

she couldn’t be that angry.  .  .   right?

maybe it was the way he tousled the dark strands of his hair with flitting movements, or how his eyes shifted to and from the path in front of him, then back at the space of the school’s emptying hallway, behind his body. to everyone, including himself, he might’ve seemed on edge. and it was true. when jaehyun stopped dead in his tracks, the lack of a buzzing, electronic device vibrating against his palms alerted him to the fact that he had lost his cellphone.

he should’ve realized it sooner, he audibly huffs in frustration. not replying to texts after a while, or missing the sound of the high-pitched quirks of kakao! had been odd, and would’ve otherwise indicated that his girlfriend was dead, due to the constant communication between them. he stands for a second, unable to choose whether he should just turn back around and miss a part of the first period’s lecture or — kakao!

she used kakao? wasn’t she japanese? no, no, she’s been here long enough. but wasn’t that charm the one that sowon.  .  .  and she’s already looking directly at him. with big bangs. and big eyes. the kind that looked eerily familiar when he attended some of his friends’ volleyball matches, he thinks. and quite frankly, her expression made him wonder whether he should even try to see if the item she held was his in the first place.

but of course he’ll try. the boy blinks at her sudden words. “ i don’t doubt it. ” and he doesn’t. did he look that scared? worried about sowon’s reaction, maybe, if she happened to see another girl using the same, cute cellphone charm as they did. she could get a little spooky, then, in what he calls her ’passion’. the boy offers a small, closed-lip grin, pointing at what’s in her hand. “ is that yours? ”

average eyes observe at face value, untrained to the nuances of individuals revealing the growth they’ve fostered over time. similar to the rings hidden with the trunk of the oak’s bark, which scratches into the nape of his neck as he leans his head against it, there were often people whose development could only be seen  from within. and soojung —  he lifts his gaze from the textbook in his lap  — jaehyun imagines it’s the same for her, though her perfect grades say otherwise. always, always number 1. 

“ do you have any suggestions? memorizing names in a dead, scientific language is, with all due respect, pretty boring. ”  he had been honest, and complained under a sigh about how his usual study methods weren’t helping with this part of the unit. being able to recognize classification systems in foreign words was, admittedly, a beautiful ability, but preparing for an exam so immediate into the school year was also taxing.

then again, maybe he should’ve known better than to voice such a simple frustration aloud to her. as number 6, in some ways, his growth was like a tree’s too: seemingly stagnant in outward appearance, but undoubtedly different from within. yet he was always, always number 6.

bright greens and yellows stained into the white cotton near the ankles of his calf-length socks. a splotch of muddied brown and purple bruised into a scraped patch on his right elbow. a dark drop of scarlet trickled between the baby blue threads embedding the activewear’s brand name into the top he wore. all colors familiarly decorated his slender frame with the majority of soccer practices and matches, but at least the reds had been his too. unlike today, where the blood falling from jisu’s nose had splattered onto his chest, upon the rogue ball’s impact against her face.

shit. and he wasn’t even that close to her.jaehyun’s long legs flew in front of him as he rushed towards the second year, an apology fluttering hurriedly from the tip of his tongue. uncanny, really, how he managed to injure her as soon as she said that. “ it isn’t shock from being called a woman, i wouldn’t  — ” his fingers are quick to scramble closed around her wrist, gently pulling in order to somewhat stabilize her body, although immediately releasing in favor of not giving her the momentum needed to butt her head against his as revenge. wincing, his hand wavers in the air, unsure of where to settle or whether to wipe above her lips with the pad of a thumb, and his nose crinkles in indecision. 

did this count? did the best woman win?  snorting, he takes the hem of his shirt and brings it up to clear the liquid pooling on her cupid’s bow. “ congrats? ”yeah, it did count; he can’t win if he’s dead.

my name is ara and i haven’t been doing krp lately bcoz of school reasons, but as things wind down, i’ve missed writing for non-academic reasons (yet joined a school rp heH) and youth fossils seems like such a good environment to be in, aka thank ye for ur existence... <33333

so you guys, jaehyun’s facts are not cute right now, but here are a couple of things that’d be good to know about this endearing patootie, hear me out he’s a “cool”guy”!!!!!:

the ahn family is #goals, okay, they’re smart and got their power based on diligence, but they’re also sweethearts who play pg-rated cards against humanity together while eating chicken and drinking banana milk

but jaehyun was just naturally an indifferent, stoic kid, and ppl would blame it on him lacking that ~magic~mommy~bond right after birth bc he was born premature and needed to be taken care of medically, separately from them

though hey, he doesn’t think so, he was just chill and observant

he steadily became more open and kind, and is it possible to be as sweet when the world is so not??? YOU’RE WRONG it is possible, he is possible

is a cinnamon bun who genuinely believes that people are more than what they front on about, he’s been a witness to it everywhere, and it’s one of the reasons he’s been able to survive in a cut-throat society and why that cut-throat society might just so happen to like letting him survive
