Project 4: OS Project
Project specifications:
Goal: The goal for this project is to develop an understanding of user interface design, end-user behavior, visual handicaps, eye movement, and overall information architecture of interfaces for operating systems compatible with desktops, laptops, mobile devices, phones, tablets, and more. You will produce deliverables for web, video, and more. This is a portfolio piece.
Practical Goal: Design your own operating system user interface that is scalable across laptops, desktops, video game consoles, phones, and tablets. All work will be constructed in Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, XD, and Dreamweaver. All work will be formally and professionally presented to the class and professionals at the Youngstown Business Incubator and online via YouTube streaming. At the culmination of the presentations, each lasts 15 maximum, the class will vote on the best solution. Professional judges will also choose the Top 3 best works. The winner will be rewarded with a respectable design-related prize and bragging rights.
Application Usage: Photoshop, Adobe XD, Illustrator, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Dreamweaver, Applications of your choice
Necessary Content for Grade:
User Profiles
Wireframe Sketches
Digital Mock-Ups based on wireframes
Custom, original logo
One PDF of all screens
Adobe XD walkthrough file
Adobe XD-produced video (must be online)
Adobe XD-produced website (must be online)
Video of user-testing your OS Project (must include user profile of users)
A minimum of 5 diary videos (1 per week) that details your methodology
Collection of written feedback from user testing
Edited Video containing walkthrough, user testing, and presentation uploaded to YouTube
OS’s in XD must be formatted in Horizontal orientation for iPad 12.9inch
Must register time in Open Device Lab and record devices you test on. The following devices will be used: ( iPads iPhones iPods Android Tablets)
Illustrator mock-up of your OS’s computer design (10pts Extra credit for 3D design of computer and 3D Print mock-up)
All work will be collected and made available for download on a 1-page website made of HTML and CSS or Wordpress.
Screens:
Desktop/ Laptop: 4 screens: pre-login, logged in, open application, two applications open
Tablet: 4 screens: loading, logged in/loaded, open application, transition between two applications
Phone: 4 screens: loading, logged in/loaded, open application, transition between two applications
Game Console: 4 screens: loading, logged in/loaded, open application, transition between two applications

Due: December 6
Presentations: TBD
Your presentations will be recorded and broadcast LIVE on YouTube to jurors for this project.

Project 3: Conceptual Signage Display & Interactive User Interface
Project specifications:
Goal: This project asks you to conceptualize the design of a physical kiosk or signage display for a high-traffic environment found within an area local to the Mahoning Valley, illustrate a mock-up of it as a design and as a contextual mock-up, and design a fully interactive user interface for the display using the best standards and practices of interactive design and user experience. A thorough documentation of your creative process is necessary for this project, including user profiles, wireframe sketches, and sketches of your display. Your chosen environment must be publicly accessible and able to be photographed. All of your work will be compiled into a single PDF. Expect your work to be reviewed by professionals.
Practical Goal: You will primarily be constructing a user interface for a kiosk that would be used by people in public environments. You may choose the client or subject matter. Your user interface must have the following:
Intro screen
Menu/Home screen
No more than 10 screens to complete a series of functions or tasks
What software you choose to complete this work is up to you. This is part of the challenge.
Tasks/challenges are up to you.
Design of interfaces must conform to best User Experience principles.
Design of display signage must conform to realistic expectations in size, shape, location, and accessibility.
Your interface walkthrough will be recorded and put on YouTube.
Size of screen is up to you: tablet, phone, or television-size screens.
Touch-capacity is implied with your interfaces.

Project specifications:
Goal: Rebrand a local area small business and create a totally new, multi-page website for this organization by way of manipulating an existing Drupal template to conform to small business’ brand. Custom theme design is not recommended, but appreciated.
Practical Goal: Explore building a multi-page website using Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS, and content management system Drupal. Uploading to remote server via built-in Dreamweaver FTP. Understand URL, file linkage, and high-level cross browser compatibility. Build for multi-device viewing and multi-device browser compatibility. Integrate responsive characteristics, multimedia, and original content into website. Business name must be fictitious but can be based on a real local-area business.
Application Usage: Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Drupal
Pages: 5 primary pages minimum, unlimited secondary page limit.
Optional Pages: Relative to subject matter.
Necessary Content for Grade: Collected into single PDF, downloadable from site.
