rules: post 6 sentences of an unfinished work and tag 6 people
Mulder shrugs a little, then. “Maybe it is—but you still came.” “Well.” Scully clicks on her flashlight, pans it in a slow, bright arc across the little living room, the throat of the hallway, the ruffled, faraway back of Mulder’s dark head. The easy answer here is: Of course I did, because someone needs to make sure you stay out of trouble.  She doesn’t know how to say: Coming was my only option. It has been for a while.

Ants are a form of thing, known for travelling in cliques. They are small in size, unknown in color, and bashful in temperament. Every ant has two appendages they use to hurt other beings, and four appendages for other activities. Scientists have discovered many types of ants; gay, Protestant, electric, and chill. Their wealth is considered low.

writing patterns meme!
ty @vinelark @englishsub @megafaunatic for tagging me!
rules: list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!
At 4 AM, Yuuji flips aside his bedsheet and rises, fully clothed, to gather his things in the dark. (nothing speaks to you in the night)
“She would have been so happy to see you with child,” Mingyu says one day, and the needle slips straight out from its careful perch between Yingluo’s fingers. (new life)
Friday afternoon, 5 PM on the dot, light slanting just so down from the narrow little window in the ceiling above the clutter of their office. (like a lonely house)
The smooth white curve of Yun Weishan’s bare shoulder rises like a snow-capped peak out of the steaming water. (from vicious tongues)
“We shouldn’t be doing this,” says Scully, even as she swallows down the last bite of the cookie she’s been rolling around in her mouth. (feel like a brand new person)
One spring, many years ago, Jefferson drove his whole family down to the coastline: Rio, a vision in her wide-brimmed hat and white sundress; Miles, sunscreened into oblivion and small enough to be washed away by the tide. (mariner)
When Miles snorts awake, he’s met with a room lit in amber and the expression that Pavitr makes when he’s trying not to laugh and failing miserably. (birds of a feather)
There’s a weird white guy standing outside of Miles’ classroom. (double gravity)
When Miles opens the front door, his uncle is on the other side, hand still raised mid-knock. (i only see you in the city light)
Ellie knows how to take care of a wound. (away went a dull winter wind)
girl idk.....im bad at pattern recognition.........

In the absence of a clear and obvious angle to attack Bushnell’s protest, most likely due to his status as a serviceman that would make outright insulting him or suppressing the news itself scandalous, discussions on Western shores have now taken on the familiar framing of mental illness. In Time Magazine’s write-up of Bushnell’s death, the article finishes with a link to the suicide hotline, and asks readers to contact mental health providers if they are experiencing a “crisis.” Mark Joseph Stern, a writer at Slate, seemingly unasked, also wrote on Twitter/X:
“I strongly oppose valorizing any form of suicide as a noble, principled, or legitimate form of political protest. People suffering mental illness deserve empathy and respect, but it is wildly irresponsible to praise them for using a political justification to take their own life.”
Conviction does not exist to the American. To be willing to die in a selfless act for what they believe in only exists for those outside America's sphere of influence. Many will recall reporting on those who self-immolated in protest in Iran and in Russia for instance where this sort of approach, unwilling to engage with the root of its cause, would not even be entertained, let alone written and published with sincerity. The Arab Spring began with a self-immolation. The self-immolation of Buddhist monks in protest of South Vietnam’s persecution became defining images of the war and its corruption. Within America’s walls however, there is a belief, unspoken and ingrained from birth, that democracy allows for everyone’s voices to be heard and that its representatives are inherently inclined to respond to the people and their widespread wishes.
Desperation at inaction or complicity in terror and atrocity need not apply. Everyone incensed by their government to such an extent must simply have something wrong with them. To be able to go about one’s day knowing that children are screaming from the hunger that is eating their insides and that pregnant women are eating bread made from animal feed, and that the United States is supporting Israel’s creation of this famine, is apparently the real sign of well-adjustment.
Seamus Malekafzali, “The Words Burned Through His Throat: The Sacrifice of Aaron Bushnell,” February 26, 2024.
