Biography
Kate was born on her families ranch in Strawberry. She is the second born daughter to the McMastersons, who were notable rancher’s and wagon builders. Kate and her sister Isabelle had a quiet life, spending their days exploring the acres around the ranch, learning animal husbandry, hard work, and how to handle guns. Kate had an affinity for nature since she was a child and her father purchased her a camera on her twelfth birthday so she could pursue her dream of being a professional photographer. While her sister and the other girls of Strawberry were pining for men, Kate was busy photographing vistas and anything else that struck her fancy. When she was sixteen she opened her first studio in the barn behind the McMasterson ranch and did family portraits for 5 dollars a sitting. She designed the backdrops from her vistas and soon her pockets were filling. This granted her prestige, and many famous or would be famous cowboys, ranchers and families from as far as Lemoyne came to have their photo taken.
This is where she met her to be husband, Bill Whitfield the III, a son of an Industrialist from Saint Denis who was traveling through West Elizabeth on his father’s errand. Kate never believed in love at first sight, before she met Bill. His blue eyes captured her attention immediately. The dusky red-hair chiseled jaw and wily smile left a print on not only her camera but her heart. She conversed with him about life in West Elizabeth, and he dazzled her with stories of life in Saint Denis. When he offered to take her there and show her the city-slicker life, she could not say no. Her parents were against the idea, but she was a woman-grown and had her own money to do with what she pleased. That summer, she bought a train ticket to Saint Denis and met Bill at the station. He dazzled her with city life. Her camera was always in her hand as she experienced everything the city life offered, from the buildings to the vaudeville shows.
Before her week excursion was over, Bill was on his knee, proposing to her and vowing he could not imagine his life without her. She accepted and both rode the train back to West Elizabeth to break the news to her family. The proposal was not denied and Kate and Bill were married by fall. They decided to build a life in Strawberry and also build a life in Saint Denis. Kate opened her own photography studio in Saint Denis, and Bill worked in prospecting out of Strawberry and Lemoyne.
Everything seemed perfect to onlookers, but the couple was far from it. Kate had two miscarriages and a stillborn daughter in the first two years of marriage and deemed barren. The Whitfield’s felt she was worthless since she could not produce an heir and they secretly begged him to find a new wife or even a mistress to carry on the family name. This was a point of contention between Bill and his parents and Kate knew it was a burden on their marriage. Bill began drinking after hours in Strawberry and word got around he was seeing a mysterious blond woman.
Bill denied the rumors and Kate trusted him with her life. It was a cold fall morning when the woman arrived at their home, claiming she was carrying Bill’s unborn child. The truth was a bitter pill for Kate to swallow. It seemed this woman was a former lover of Bill’s and she was sent by his parents and paid to seduce a child out of Bill. The plan was for her to kill Kate and then marry him but she could not go through with it. The woman promised to keep their secret safe if they paid her. Two thousand dollars and a portion of their mining profits sold, the secret was buried.
The rift between man and wife was deep, and they barely spoke for weeks. Kate removed herself from the ranch and got herself an apartment in Saint Denis. While she was away, Bill went hunting and did not return after three days. The town grew concerned and went to look for him. They found him, rather parts of him, as he had been viciously mauled by a grizzly that lay dead a few feet away, riddled with bullet holes.
The funeral was in Saint Denis, and not even a day after, the Whitfield family altered Bill’s will and took over all the finances of the couple. They wrote her out of the will besides Bills horse, in which she was told to “ride off and find a new life or they would end her permanently.”
She traveled back to Strawberry where she stayed with her sister’s family which consisted of her husband and two small children. After a winter and a bout of depression, with the spring thaw came restlessness and she focused her sorrows and frustration on her hobby. She now travels and collects objects of importance to sell and makes her coin on nature photography.
