Not too many moons ago, I embarked on a journey to Fayoum on a three-day retreat for Sudanese women who had just fled the war.
Reinforcing fears applying to the program and arriving in serene Fayoum. I was overwhelmed by guilt, partly because all those I cared about would not get to experience this with me—the scenery, the guesthouses—a desired relief.
The program (officially) included light morning movement, meditations, gentle yoga, trauma awareness, healing & breathing exercises, reflections, swims, sunsets, walks, & group activities.
With participants of all ages & backgrounds, it was delightful to watch the bridge of communication & rapport form, the magic of human connections, or what we call in my line of work, community support groups, with a total of 24 participants, and the four women team who made it all happen.
I met & connected with some amazing beings, with all these wonderful women, living in community, the program (not officially) ended up including laughter, singing, friendship, emotions, boat rides, art, photography, and an impromptu pottery class (we entered a shop in Fayoum; where a local was pottering a bowl, watching mesmerized, he asked if we wanted to try, which was always on my bucket list!). Needless to say, in a time of heaviness, great suffering, and war, it was a very warm needed experience.
To even add on, the program was completely free, including transport from and to Fayoum, accommodation, meals, etc.
Who is behind this wonderful initiative, you may ask? BlueNilelotus, a yoga studio in Sudan, owned by Nathalie Bittar, who not only created the program but sought funding for it, supported by Eszter, Tayseer, and Amaal, who collectively and gracefully volunteered with their time/hearts, taking turns offering their expertise in meditation, yoga, & all the above-mentioned activities.
So dear friends, without further gatekeeping, since my brother asked me where I find this ملح stuff, below is the link for BNL. Feel free to sign up to the newsletter for upcoming similar retreats, which may not only be for women.
