Scar x Treasure Planet

For Scar I chose the incredible and underrated Disney move, Treasure Planet!

I loved Treasure Planet as a kid and still consider it one of the best animated Disney movies ever. However, it didn't do well critically (for various reasons I won't get into) and so there's never anything Treasure Planet related at the parks and lots of people have never seen it, which is such a shame.

I picked this movie for Scar because I am trying to manifest Scar watching Treasure Planet someday. This movie is like if a team of Disney animators sat down and brainstormed a list of stuff Scar has said he likes and then made a movie out of it.

Treasure Planet is a sci-fi adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. The story follows a young man named Jim Hawkins who grows up on stories about the legendary space pirate, Captain Flint. Upon finding a map to the fabled Treasure Planet, Jim embarks on a journey to find the treasure.

In his adventures across the vastness of space, he makes friends, sails through nebulas, and faces down dangerous space pirates who want the treasure for themselves. The story is action-packed and heartfelt, with a strong cast of memorable characters and a beautiful, astronautical setting.

If you haven't seen Treasure Planet I highly recommend watching it. It's only about an hour and a half long and it's well worth the time.

Hermit-a-Day May, day 29: Hypnotizd. Today's style/medium is charcoal (with a tiny hint of pastels)! I'll confess, Hypno is one of the hermits I'm least familiar with, but when I looked up his skin and saw the stark contrasts between light and dark, I knew that charcoal was the perfect medium for this. Details and materials under the read more!

References: Hypno's skin plus a photo of myself wearing a bandana staring moodily at the camera in the bathroom with the door cracked. I felt very silly but it was worth it for the lighting!

Materials: Strathmore charcoal paper (400 series), General's charcoal kit (#15), Mungyo Gallery soft pastels for artists (15-color box) for the hints of yellow, and a regular pencil eraser (I hate the fancy ones).

Details: good golly trying to work with charcoal is difficult when you're left-handed. I mean, it's difficult if you're right-handed too, but like. The side of my left hand is covered in charcoal and I stopped to wash my hands like four times while drawing. I should... probably go wash them again. I knew this was gonna be messy, because this is hardly my first time working with charcoal, but it has been a while. I heavily referenced a photo of myself, as mentioned above, and marked out what areas were going to be the lightest and darkest before shading them in. I used the 557-HB hard pencil for the gray areas and a mixture of the medium, soft, and ex. soft pencils for the black areas--I just left the highlights blank, and then added a tiny touch of 558 white to compensate for the very light brown of the paper. I tried using the charcoal sticks a bit but it just wasn't worth the mess for this piece, honestly, so I mostly stuck to the pencils.

Confessions and tribulations: I think the background could stand to be a little darker, but I didn't want the whole piece to be black so I went with a mid-tone. I have no idea what the yellow pixels on his skin are supposed to be so I just. left them as a rectangle. Shout-out to my paper which would not lay flat for a photo without rocks weighing the corners down. Also my reference photo was taken while I was wearing my glasses because my vision is very, very bad, so some of the face shading might only be accurate to people who are wearing glasses. Shhh if nobody reads this part then no one will know.

Anyway I'm really proud of this one! I think the lighting is super cool and it makes me happy. :D

Hermit-a-Day May, day 25: ImpulseSV. Today's style/medium is Netflix's Arcane! This took. so much rendering. I kinda phoned it in on the outfit but I think I'm allowed given how much gosh darn time I spent on his face. While this isn't my favorite of the pieces I've finished this month, I am frickin proud of the rendering because I've never tried a portrait this detailed before, let alone one in an entirely different style from my own. Okay I have a lot of references for this one. I referenced Jayce most heavily, with a couple shots of Vi for facial details and Vander for the beard.

I also referenced this picture of IRL Impulse for some of the facial details, particularly the shape of his nose and how he styles his hair.

I'm a weird mixture of grumpy and really pleased with this piece? Without disparaging my art skills, I do think that this was a big push out of my comfort zone. I learned a lot, but because of that, there's also a lot I would do differently if I ever attempted this style again--and I definitely still have even more to learn. Hermit-a-Day May, Day 22: Iskall85. Today's style/medium is Minecraft map art! This is because I wanted to make Iskall's portrait with as much diorite as humanly possible. Materials: Krita (for the base art), Rebane2001's MapartCraft site (available here), a Minecraft superflat world, a structure block, and way, way too much time spent trying to get the orientation and placement of the art to line up with the map borders. Structure blocks are weird, y'all. This tutorial by PuffingFish HQ was very helpful for figuring out how to access the file in the first place.

This is probably the earliest I've ever been done with my art this month, and it still took longer than it should have, due to various technical difficulties. That's probably because this piece is rather simple, but I refuse to feel bad about that because it was for the bit, y'know? Also don't ask me what's going on with his left eye because I don't know either. It just felt right.

The first time I loaded the structure into Minecraft, I just burst out laughing because it looks. Ridiculous and slightly terrifying, honestly. Diorite eldritch horror and/or biblically accurate angel.

Side note, my apologies if the images' alt text isn't useful or if it makes no sense--I honestly have no idea how to describe these in a helpful way.
