HISTORY IN THE MAKING. Michelle Yeoh’s win, the first asian woman ever to win Best Actress, had me in tears. It made me think of Anna May Wong, the first Asian American film star in Old Hollywood and the obstacles she had to endure in her career. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer refused to consider her for the leading role in the film version of Pearl S. Buck's The Good Earth. They instead cast Luise Rainer to play it in yellowface. Some poetic justice was done last night. I know some of you also hoped for Blanchett, who I also think was astonishing in TAR, so my heart was parted in two, really. Isn’t it ironic that these two icons of the XXth century were never addressed by the Academy, and this year, they share the spotlight with two biopics? Unfortunately Blonde is not a biopic nor a good film (actually it’s an abomination, as you may already know what i think of it) but I believe Ana de Armas did an amazing job with the poor material she was offered. She should be happy just being nominated, though. Elvis, on the other hand, is a brilliant homage to the icon, and Austin Butler may actually surprise everyone with an Oscar win.
