✿ - Sex headcanon

Indie is sex-favourable demisexual, she hasn't had many partners. TWO to be precise: her late husband, and Haurchefant Greystone. But that little scrap of info will not be enough to feed you so here's a couple of preferences she has discovered about herself and her sexual partners:

She likes to be praised and encouraged and wants to be told how they're feeling and what they need during sex - she loves to please. She's also not shy in asking for what she needs, and she praises liberally; they will know exactly where and how she wants to be touched, and when they're getting it right.

She doesn't have a particular favourite position but loves the intimacy of eye to eye contact. So if they're not facing each other, she'd prefer if they fuck in front of a mirror so that she can watch her partner getting off. And if they're comfortable with it, she also loves to watch them pleasuring themselves.

☾ - sleep headcanon

Indie struggles with sleep, she has since the day she lost her husband. Memories of that day return violently to the forefront of her mind as soon as she finds herself alone in the dark, missing the comfort and protection of having him lying next to her.

He was so very protective of her, but now that he's gone and she has thrown herself into a life of adventuring, she feels more vulnerable than ever. She copes a lot better during the day, when her mind and body is occupied, but inevitably at some point, she'll be alone and in the dark again. Better to nap, little and often, that's how she'll deal with the horrors for now. Wake up, start again, paint a fresh smile on her face.

She's a very light sleeper and will rarely sleep for more than 4 hours at a time, but since she spends a lot of time on the road, being able getting her head down in the nearest settlement whilst staying relatively alert is not such a bad thing. Thin silver linings.

■ -  Bedroom/house/living quarters headcanon

Indie chose (and was lucky enough to get) a house near the sea, in a place that reminds her most of her childhood home. She scoured Mist looking for a plot where she could watch the sun set over the sea. Although the beach front properties offer the clearest view, the plot she eventually bought further up the cliff is a closer match to the views she had as a child. It's a comfort to her. Her FC room is also by the sea in Shirogane. Blessed!

Both homes are full of trinkets; little bits of treasure she's collected on her adventures as well as gifts from friendly WoLs. Although her homes (and storage!) are bursting at the seams, she cannot bear to let anything go. She's such a hoarder. In amongst all the STUFF, the one thing you'll always find in any place she calls home, is a writing set.

∇ - old age/aging headcanon

I want the suffering, give it to meeee.

I want everyone to know that when I opened up my inbox and saw this ask, I immediately DM'd him saying YOU PICKED THE MEANEST ONE and he essentially replied with cackling.

So I have a gpose set that kinda gets across how I think of it here, but I can use some words on top of it, of course.

Dusk never really thought about aging or death that much. Obviously he knows it'll happen, and he's aware that as an elezen he lives a little longer than most of the other Spoken races. The idea of outliving most of his current non-elezen friends made him a little sad, but what can you do? And who knows if he'll even live a full elezen life? It's not like he hasn't almost died a few times already!

But then he fell in love with Farron, who is going to outlive him by who-knows-how-long-there's-conflicting-age-ranges-given-in-game, but even the most generous reading (at least as far as minimizing depression goes) has it close to a century. And that makes Dusk incredibly sad.

The thought of pulling away and ending it before stuff got too serious did cross his mind, but honestly, by the time it did cross his mind, the relationship was already serious. And when he talked it out with Farron, Farron was adamant he still wanted this relationship, that it was already worth it to him. How could Dusk say no, when he already loved Farron so much?

Dusk still hates it, and once in a while the reality of that eventual pain his death will cause really sits on his chest and takes his breath away. He can't imagine going through what Farron is going to, and he feels helpless that there's not much he can do to keep Farron from having to.

It's a good time. =)

▼ - childhood headcanon

So another thing about Indie's childhood, apart from being raised by a pair of potatoes, is that she was part of a very, very small community. She was friends with the few kids around her age, but there was very little opportunity for play. She was quite a lonely child.

She befriended the bugs to make sure they had friends too, because no one should be lost or lonely. I think this is also how she felt when she adopted Vath Deftarm. This poem by Nicolette Sowder reminds me so much of her:

May we raise children who love the unloved things - the dandelion, the worms and spiderlings. Children who sense the rose needs the thorn and run into rainswept days the same way they turn towards the sun… And when they've grown and someone has to speak for those who have no voice May they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things, and be the ones.

☯ - likes/dislikes headcanon

I know I've mentioned Indie likes sunsets more than a few times, but to expand on that a bit, Indie likes nature's cycles in general. She loves sunrises - fresh hopes for a new day, and sunsets - a time to reflect and to process. She loves the changing of the seasons, especially the regeneration of spring and the late summer harvests - important farming times. As much as she enjoys the sunshine, she loves the storms that clear the air and make room for new beginnings. She's a real nature nerd.

So as you can imagine, landing on The First was super unsettling for her. Here we have a world with no seasons, no night and day, no weather patterns, no sunsets. One day bleeds into the next and the next. How can a day be complete without night? When do you rest, when do you regroup? Whilst others may marvel at the beauty of Lakeland, that location in particular made her feel nauseous. Purple as far as the eye could see, a colour not usually found in such abundance in nature and certainly not in the world Indie knows. All of Indie's coping mechanisms were thrown out of whack: A very bad acid trip, 0/10 would not recommend.

We'll go with that one since I have another childhood headcanon ask waiting in my inbox to think of :)

Yes, Indie's parents were lalafellin! Indie was taller than them before her 3rd birthday, which sure was a challenge for mum and dad.

Her mum explained as much as she could to Indie as soon as questions were raised, which was actually later than they expected. Indie didn't think much about their differences beyond, some people are small and some are big and sometimes they are family.

When Indie learned that she was found by her parents rather than born to them, she was naturally upset, "Was I bad?" That's the less fun side, no doubt contributing to the abandonment issues she developed later. Fortunately Indie had an excellent relationship with both parents who did everything they could to make her feel loved and wanted.

Indie wasn't really a naughty child, but she was full of mischief. Being able to outrun her parents and hold things out of their reach was a great source of amusement for her.

The other fun thing about having lala parents is that until she began socialising outside of her tiny family unit, she picked up all her mannerisms from them. Please imagine this young highlander lady emoting lalafellin-style, it's very cute. Please imagine her still doing that occasionally even now.

☮ - friendship headcanon

Hmmm.

I've been thinking a lot lately about Dusk and his friendships with the Scions as of 6.55. He considers himself at least friends with all of them, of course, but how close they are varies pretty widely.

I'm going to try not to be TOO wordy, but I'll do a cut anyway. Also if there's anyone who doesn't want to know who all the Scions are by 6.55, um ... don't click.

He trusts them all with his life, to be clear, but ... he feels like Y'shtola and Thancred in particular hold him at arm's length. And he finds himself feeling conflicted about G'raha semi-regularly. He likes the guy, but every time he has a little bout of hero worship, Dusk can't help but pull back a bit.

Krile isn't one of the close Scions either, but I expect that'll change significantly in Dawntrail. Their distance is more a matter of not having much time to get closer, shunted off to the side as Krile's been in the MSQ. The one really significant thing Dusk's done with Krile is Eureka and uhhhh ... I never actually finished Eureka, so it's not quite canon for him anyway.

Dusk feels protective of Tataru, but at the same time, I don't think she's someone who springs to mind for him when he is full of feelings and needs to unload them somewhere. So a friend! But not a close one, even after all this time. Great business partner though, he'll do capitalism with her anytime.

The twins (sorry for lumping you two together, guys) are in their own category too. He's close to them, but it's the sort of close a much older person has with a young adult that looks up to them. He's about as old as their dad, you see. So while they could absolutely come to him with anything, and he would do his best to support them in whatever way they need ... it's one-way, by his choice. They're still so young and have already been through so much, he'd rather eat glass than have them hear about some of the heavy shit he thinks and worries about.

Urianger, I have realized, has somehow become one of Dusk's closer friends in the Scions, and I'm not even sure how it happened. All I know is, during Endwalker, Urianger kept confiding in Dusk, and Dusk found that he felt extremely comfortable with the idea of confiding in him right back, so I guess they're close now? I can't explain it well, yet it ... really works for me, so I'm keepin' it!

Dusk and Estinien think they're subtle and still come across as Just Bros. They are incorrect, they have been incorrect about this for years. Even so, they are bros. You know how Estinien is all Ishgard Intense about how he is ride or die for the WoL, how he's always pledging his spear, or saying he will absolutely ruin anyone you send him at (I'm pretty sure that's his version of a marriage proposal, btw)? Dusk feels exactly as intense about him.

I've spent an embarrassing amount of time thinking about this since Indie's creation. There's a small group of islands off the east coast of Gyr Abania - Indie grew up on one of those; near to the sea and remote enough to have felt the effects of the Garlean occupation far less abruptly than those on the mainland.

(May expand on this another time if the mood takes me, but it makes sense in terms of her sense of community as well as her lack of street-smarts. And it's a good fit all round for her backstory.)
