to add to this, or…get into it more, Rio was both resentful and afraid of their own capacity for callousness, their ability to leave their mother to not only die in that fire but to be grateful for it. to have wished for it and for it to feel good when it happened.

and the guilt behind that the incongruent feeling of relief was killing them every single day. the fact that they practically died in that supermarket and were killed by someone more decisive than them was just the inevitable end to a path they were already on.

their near-death experience likely kickstarted some realizations, that they needed to start living to not die full of regrets. but really, it was just a trickle in the water. there was so much more to learning to love themself than the wake up call of nearly losing it. it was laughing with people, letting them in. doing things for others that only they could do and recontextualizing the scars on their body to the point that they were living and not just going through the motions

idek how many years it’s been but i still think Rio is my best written character even if their case got fucked bc of circumstances out everyone’s control. but honestly, their relationship and resentment/fear with their killer would never outweigh the amount of loathing they experienced for themself and that was pretty much the point
