Am i the only one who really likes rimuru as a character. Like he is the closest thing i have to a blorbo i want to put under a microscope. Strange creature type. He ends up in situations and i want to put him in a blender because there is so much unexplored flavor there.

One question that I will come back to again and again is simply this:

why?

Where is Clayman's Revenge going, broadly? Why is this the story Fuze wants to tell?

Obviously I can only speculate - I am not the author. And I don't really have strong answers yet.

I think a big motif through the story so far is a compare and contrast to Rimuru and his friends. Clayman falls because he doesn't confide in and listen to his friends though arguably this is out of his control with the influence set by Kondo. However, Revenge sets the stage that he's been doing a bad job of relying on them even prior to Kondo's influence.

The difference in the main timeline for Revenge is that he's started listening to them and including them. One of the covers even explicitly compares him and his army to Rimuru!

(chapter 11, full disclosure, this is a fan translation screen cap. The official English apparently didn't feel like translating those words, they're just missing entirely, but I see them in the Japanese raws!)

So I don't think this theme is very subtle. Clayman and his forces are growing stronger because of him earning trust and giving trust, and growing as a person. And my expectation is that this will lead to a better outcome for him. What that means for the world is pretty interesting though, especially with Chloe/Chronoa/the Hero looping through time the way they are.

It's also worth mentioning that Clayman himself is...oblivious to the reasons as to why his people are stronger.

(Chapter 12)

He has no idea why things are going better than in the past, so clearly he's still got a lot to learn on this journey. That being said, we can also see this growth has taken root and it isn't just an act.

I don't have the impression he would have called them "friends" in the original timeline, for one, and he's clearly actually upset about this. And, as I brought up in my thoughts on chapter 20, he keeps buying things for people (Eva with the necklace and Raine with the ambergris) even if there's not a good reason.

So that brings up another thing - what will happen with the encounter with Kondo? Clayman doesn't remember it. He has no idea he's been under someone else's control in both of the prior timelines.

my best guess at this point is that by this time, he will have a new reputation, and someone else will realize something is a wrong - a friend. Maybe multiple friends. I suppose the whole thing could be avoided, but the idea of someone noticing the difference and caring enough to do something really aligns with the idea of friendship and the benefits it brings. So I think that's more like.

That being said, I'm still wondering why Clayman. Clayman gets so little development in the novels (and other adaptations) - he's this villain that's propped up just to fall really hard (it frustrates me just how hard - the claim is made repeatedly of how smart he is and we don't see that in the main timeline at all). The Moderate Jesters do have an important role to play as Yuuki's subordinates in the main plot, so does it have to do with this family unit as much as with Clayman's growth? I still wonder what the outcome of this is going to be.

There's also the fact I can't dismiss that Clayman's soul has been inside of Rimuru this entire time in the main plot. I'm not sure I agree with the idea I've seen put forth that this is something Rimuru is doing to him - teaching him a lesson while he's inside his stomach. It would require knowledge that neither he nor Clayman (or Raphael/Ciel) have to simulate all of this so I just don't see it. That, and his soul is used to heal Tear (in 19? I think it was book 19).

Actually, by the end of book 20, Clayman's family has been absolutely devastated. Footman has been taken over by Jahil. Laplace and Yuuki both are MIA (I don't believe either of them are dead). Tear and Kagali are. Alright ish.

But wait. Let's go back to that Footman thing. Do we know when Jahil was implanted into Footman? I'm not sure we do. Is Jahil already spying on Clayman in Clayman's Revenge? And also why would Feldway put him in place to spy on Clayman specifically anyway...hm. I guess the real target may have been Kazalim, but...I'm not sure. This feels like something I'd like to come back to when we have more information.

Let's just close the lid on that though - the second I start thinking about what might change in the main timeline I realize I need a separate post probably, that's an entire can of worms.

To bring it back to the point, I love the world building we're getting and the character development we're getting for Clayman and the people around him. I would, frankly, read the shit out of a slice of life Clayman manga so I have no complaints. But I think there are bigger things afoot here, and I'm eager to see where this is going despite my lack of answers currently!

Another thing I've noticed is that, specifically in the manga and bit later on in the light novel, Rimuru doesn't mind wearing more feminine clothes if they so choose along with their typical gender-neutral and sometimes masculine attire.

Rant on Rimuru's gender cause I am SICK and TIRED of this shit 😭

Rimuru uses BOTH MALE and GENDER NEUTRAL pronouns for themselves while others use something similar to 'it' and they. (It's also nice to note that very rarely would Fuse refer to Rimuru with a gendered pronoun rather then it.)

“It's cute when it's a slime, and when it's humanoid, it can't be either male or female. I wasn't aiming for anything with Rimuru's asexual gender, but I think it turned out to be a good thing." “It was too much trouble to decide on the gender, so I chose asexual (laughs)."

At the start of the novel, Rimuru calls themselves a man, like their past life. But as time went on, Rimuru would rarely talk abt their gender besides those moments (which become less and less with Rimuru losing sexual interest) and instead cuts the 'man' all together and says 'slime'.

As a small add on, Rimuru's page on the FAN-MADE wiki refer to Rimuru with they/them. Take this with grain of salt.

I personally believe that Fuse has set up Rimuru's gender for interpretation, and fans are free to view Rimuru as whatever.

Whether Fuse did this because 'well, slimes are genderless so why should Rimuru be gendered' or if he made the consious decision to create a non-binary main character, I don't know.

In conclusion, suck my non existence dick. Rimuru is a Demon Lord slime thing, gender is the least of thier concerns.

I'm able to write Milim Nava in this by memory, I'm so normal about tensura

i just like Codes and Ciphers so when i realized that the fantasy text in Tensura (specifically, in the app game, Isekai Memories) corresponded to the roman alphabet and was unable to find said text online, i decided to crack it myself. here's the results, minus a few letters that haven't showed up in canon yet, with sources below the cut if you're curious how i did it!

the first thing i had to go off of was the loading screen, on which the text switches between "NOW LOADING" and this:

which gave me a few letters to get started! so i began applying these letters where i found them again, using signage found around Tempest which gave some other letters via context clues:

and other text scattered throughout the game that also had context clues:

with a good portion of the alphabet assembled, i set out to tackle the mother of all sources - THIS wall of text:

which turned out to be song lyrics and therefore a fantastic Rosetta Stone to fill in most of the blanks.

the devs seem to have used this as Lorem Ipsum as needed, since it crops up a couple more times:

finally, i tackled this monstrosity, and while i didn't get any new letters from this, it did turn out to be something plot-related and is pretty interesting cause it looks like Great Sage actually kinda glitches out for lack of a better phrase?

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime OVA: Visions of Coleus episodes 1-3

Fun set of episodes with a predictable story. It was enjoyable watching Rimuru play with disguises (including a nice throwback to the pre-slime days) and sneaking around.

This is set between series 1 and 2 and I'm pleased by the continuity - especially with power levels as sometimes shows forget that a character isn't supposed to be able to use that 'cool looking' move yet.

YOU'VE BEEN WARNED ⚠️

The movie and new ova for tensura came with a massive improvement with the animation and art style. Honestly, the whole vibe and ambience were much better than the series itself.

It's given me massive hopes for s3, which is coming out in April. The trailer that was recently released added to that. However, 8-bit's side profiles and various other elements such as the sharpness to the hair and sometimes lacklustre colour are all areas where 8-bit has failed. Admittedly, they have improved with the recent trailer.

From what I've seen in the trailer, designs such as Mariabelle's and Granbell's were surprisingly faithfull!! Can't say the same for previous seasons.

8-bit has a habit of animating better fight scenes in the intro/outro than in the actual series itself. This season has an extremely important and expected fight, that being Hinata vs. Rimuru round 2, one of the most anticipated fights in the entire novel in recent months (according to my mutuals on tiktok). 8-bit don't ruin this pls!!

Colouring has improved drastically, same with overall ambience and emotion. However, the side profiles haven't improved in the slightest. I can't spot any character in particular where I'm unhappy with the design, but I'm not familiar with all the Ten Saint's designs, so I'll need to compare. Luminous' design has actually become more accurate with her hair.

I'm hoping that season 3 won't be as censored as previous seasons, fuck those kids!! It's wishful thinking tho 😖

I'm worried about Glenda (red-haired woman) in particular because of fanservice, but I don't like her anyway.

Littus (blonde woman) has the most drastic design change with what I can see from the poster. Her hair was changed slightly but that's about it!!

Clayman's Revenge added so much more depth to Clayman as a character than the novel ever did, and I'm here for that. Same with a few other characters such as Raine and Mjurran.

We also get to see more of what the tensura world was like pre-Rimuru and post-Valdanava, which is surprisingly rare considering how important world building is in this type of universe that Fuse has laid out. Along with that, I'm honestly more interested in that general period of time than anything.

I hope they continue to make more spin-off manga such as this.

Alright first impressions of Clayman's Revenge: Chapter 20!!! Spoilers under the cut.

I guess I was overthinking the Demon Lord in Engrassia thing. The main takeaway is that no one here knows what Clayman looks like so no one is concerned in the slightest, because he's only really been doing deals with the East. Also, Raine, wouldn't it have been good to share all of these details with Clayman up front-

It is nice to see how much Clayman understands about money, as we've been told he's very good with it. He catches on straight away to the issue with the special ancient coins. I think this chapter still didn't contain the biggest purchase he's going to make at this auction, so I'll be curious to see when that will be.

The most exciting thing to me is the fact that Clayman is really driven by his need to name Ant 🥺this is exceptionally sweet imo. He thinks of Ant's cuteness, and decides to bid on the "useless" potions. I definitely think we're going to get a named Ant at some point in the series, and that's going to be absolutely wild because the insect types are so strong in this world. I just can't get over how sweet this is. I fear there is a small chance Clayman miscalculated and these potions wouldn't help with naming after all, but I think after all that exposition about them it's pretty unlikely to be the case that we'd toss that idea out. It's a pretty clever idea actually, if it works as he expects! Though...proclaiming how badly you want them is VERY foolish at an auction but whatever that's just Clayman Things I guess kfjshdafkjdsa

it is a shame he didn't have a chance to share this idea with Raine though, I would have loved to see her thoughts because that will be telling, I think.

As far as the other auction items...watching Clayman completely ignore Raine and buy the Doppelganger Bracelet was pretty funny. I am guessing that Yamza bought it in another timeline, so now Clayman sort of saved money by buying it now- Yamza seemed to be able to use it well in the original timeline despite the other auction attendees saying it requires being an expert, so. Hm. Maybe not a useless purchase though I am concerned at his lack of impulse control XD

^^^ tbh I don't think that at all means something is useless or a bad buy especially since Clayman knows Yamza did master it sufficiently to use it in battle. But moving on...

he's a sweetheart that's all I have to say here.

Then we come to the ambergris that Raine really likes. This has me baffled. I will point out, Clayman is equally baffled, but he does actually buy it for her, which again is sweet I think. He does care about his people, even when his people are the new and troublesome Raine. I couldn't find any references to ambergris in Tensura prior to this, but ambergris in generally is an extremely useful material, so Raine could want it for any number of reasons, really. I hope this won't be the last we see of it - I'd love to know what she's going to do with it.

Chapter 19 Thoughts

Firstly, I was so delighted to see that Clayman confided in his friends. It does make some sense though - he needed people to understand why they were all asleep suddenly. Well, Eva at least. It does sound like he's keeping it a secret from the Five Fingers. I wonder how he explained that away? Well, I guess they just have to listen and accept things sometimes, in any case.

I was also wondering when Rain would show up and the answer is NOW! It makes sense to see that the Hero is so powerful that Rain easily recognizes that she's stronger than Rain is, but it still surprised me for some reason! But then again, Rain is pretty easy going (Clayman is going to have quite the Rain shaped headache soon). ALSO THE HERO BEING ABLE TO PUT EVERYONE TO SLEEP IN THE ENTIRE CASTLE IS...SO MUCH...

This is the most incredible Clayman expression I've ever seen in my life. I made it one of my accounts pfps because. Truly. Beautiful.

I was also happy to see Laplace, and happy that his appearing without warning is so normal that Clayman doesn't even question it and accepts it at face value. Unlike Rain, who he questions immediately.

Anyway, the explanations and discussion in this chapter were good, but I think the most exciting thing was that we're going to the Engrassia auction next chapter! I am very excited about this because it sounded like Clayman himself was planning to go.

I've been curious about whether Clayman goes into human civilization and if so how he does that (I mean, besides "he walks"), especially since we do see him in a human city in the flashback of his first meeting with Yuuki. He was just wandering around casually in his normal Demon Lord outfit...that being said, one explanation for that is that he was expecting to meet Yuuki, even if he didn't know what he looked like. It still strikes me as supremely odd though. And it didn't seem like he was expecting to meet someone...? or if he did, he didn't know much about them at all since the whole Kazalim thing was a surprise.

Anyway, I digress. My point is, it seems like it would be very unusual and also terrifying (from a human perspective) for Demon Lords to regularly venture into human society. So I guess I'm curious if Clayman will go as himself or if he'd disguise himself...but tbh I don't think he's the type to use a disguise, he's much too proud. So in that case, how are people going to react to him? I'm very curious about that. Humans seem to feel Demon Lords are Very Evil Always so like...I can't imagine anyone will be happy, though maybe unable to do much about it since they're afraid. I think that will be very interesting to see.

Furthermore, the prospect of getting excellent magic items is very exciting too!!! That could make a huge difference in the power of both Clayman and his subordinates. I'm trying to think offhand if there were any magic items Rimuru gained that Clayman could potentially get instead, but I think most of Rimuru's came from Kurobe, so I don't think that will be relevant...but even so, it's still got a lot of potential. And Clayman is loaded, though he may become destitute if he doesn't watch Rain- just kidding. Mostly.

So yes! I enjoyed this chapter but it's left me very very eager for the next one!
