Call me Constance! She/they Orchestra/Bass sideblog of @you-are-constance I'll mostly reblog orchestra/band/music memes, and occasionally I'll post some of my own playing (please don't swear when talking to me) feel free to submit a song request for me to play (mostly showtunes) and i'll see if i can actually figure out how to play it (but it will certainly take a while to work it up to record) icon is my own instrument, Hades (wearing a ribbon)
favourite song ur playing rn? (in any of the orchestras and jazz band)
hmmmm... that's difficult. up until yesterday, i probably would have said our marching band show music! (easy, and sometimes boring in rehearsal, but a lot of fun to perform it/do a full run!) but since yesterday was our state competition and now the season's over, i'm technically not playing it anymore!
for school orchestra and jazz band, i'm kinda in a place between playing stuff. like we just had concerts a couple weeks ago and are still narrowing down what we'll actually be playing for the next concert (a lot of the things we've read in jazz band have been a lot of fun though, orchestra... not as much)
which sort of narrows it all down to the after-school philharmonic, and of those songs, my favorites are Serenade for Strings M. 1 (original) and New World Symphony M. 4 (strings arrangement) both by Dvorak (the only composer i respect tbh /hj) Serenade isn't always as fun, but there are a lot of parts of it I really like! over the summer i got to play the original New World Symphony (M. 1), and compared to that, the strings-only arrangement is not as much fun (esp to rehearse) but when we play through it all, i still like it a lot!
in general, none of the stuff i'm playing now is hard. like. not at all. in groups like this now, i basically just judge a piece not on if it's hard or challenging to play, but whether or not its boring to play, even while running through the whole thing. the ones aren't that are the ones i like
I have like 10 followers on this blog but i thought I’d let y’all know
Horn player: hey [teacher]? I think there's something wrong with my instrument. Whenever I try to play it just makes this noise *Never Gonna Give You Up begins playing on speakers*
there were a lot of orchestras, and i was in the most advanced one. more than that, i was SECOND CHAIR bassist, behind someone who has basically been playing since birth (chair order kinda equals your level in playing based on your audition, the best is first chair and so on, but most of us were pretty evenly matched in that group anyway. the other bassists were all awesome!)
we played 3 songs, Fantasia (by Ralph Vaughan Williams), Symphony Number 5(/9) from the New World (Dvorak), and an arrangement of songs from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
they were all AWESOME to play, and sounded so cool, but i'm mostly gonna talk about Fantasia
so if you know this song, it's meant to be performed by two orchestras (or 1 1/2 orchestras). i was in Orchestra 2. i was the only bassist in orchestra 2. everything i played was a solo, pretty much (the program even listed my name as a soloist because of that, even though i should have been listed as in orchestra 2)
uhh that's all i can think about to say for right now but if people want to ask me about it i would love it!
as i've now performed in all sorts of different music groups (performed as in: i had three concerts this past week alone), i have a bit of insight to each type and man i'm emotional
it got long. it's under a cut if you want to read it
Orchestra: my home. it was my last concert with the teacher that i've had for the past 4 years. i could write an entire essay on this teacher alone. sure, the music isn't always as interesting to play, and it doesn't always sound as cool as other groups might, but it's still my home. and this teacher has made it so much more than it would have been otherwise. this teacher encouraged me to join other groups (he had me join his most advanced orchestra even though i couldn't attend any of the class rehearsals because it wasn't even in my school) and he was the one who got me to audition for all-state (and i actually made it in) and was so determined to get me to join another group (that i'll discuss later) that he told me twice and THEN got the band teacher (who also leads that group) to tell me to join. orchestra isn't always the most fun to play in (and the people in the group aren't always the best), but it's a comfort
Jazz Band: i was the youngest person to join this group (when i first joined about two years ago) because the teacher wanted me in there so badly, and I gotta say, it was worth every morning of pulling myself out of bed and skipping breakfast because it was too early to eat. our group was so much fun to play with. every rhythm section i've played with has been so much fun. i hardly got to know the first one (but they were still lots of fun) the second one made me realize that percussionists are literally my favorite people, and the last one solidified that. my part of the music we play in here is usually really easy and pretty boring if it was just me, but when it all comes together, it's just wonderful to play.
Band (regular band): I never played with this group much, but i did perform with them this past week (bc the songs they were playing had bass parts), and the songs are just so much FUN. mostly they were pretty easy, though the key signatures were tough (5 flats is not acceptable okay), but these songs were just so enjoyable that i didn't care that i had less than a week to learn 5 of them.
Symphony Orchestra (idk what even to call it. the group where band and orchestra are combined): i can't even articulate just how cool it was to be in a group like this. this was the group that my band director leads, and my orchestra teacher was so determined to get me to join, and honestly, it was so worth it. orchestra and band are both cool and fun to play in, but this... this group was something else entirely. the things we could do with all these types of instruments (even if we had no flutes half the time), it was just indescribable. we played a medley of Les Mis that was probably my favorite thing to play of any music group this whole school year (and I've been in 8 or 9 different groups this school year, so that's saying a lot). people always joke about the feud between orchestra and band kids, and sure, it's there (it was there a lot in the first rehearsal) but once we got to actually playing together? we were a team. all of us. and it was magical.
yeah i'm just emotional over my music groups that i've played in. 3 concerts in a week is tough anyway but these were my last concerts. these groups are over now. sure, i still have a couple weeks of classes left, but after that, i'll never play with these same groups again. i'm just... missing them, already.
