It’s really pushing Locklyle. This boy was super depressed, until he met a girl and his life changed. Which is honestly pretty accurate to the books

It should be noted that other characters also comment on George’s physical appearance and make fun of him about it. It does give me an iffy feeling. I’m glad they cut it in the show

Ok oof this has been in my drafts for MONTHS but I still think it’s important so I’m gonna close my eyes and queue it 🙈

I feel like we need to open discussion about fatphobia in the Lockwood and Co books. I spent 5 mins the other day scrolling through one star reviews on Goodreads (because I saw one who said Lucy is a boring narrator(?!) which baffled me because she’s great???), but most of the negative reviews pointed out that Lucy is always commenting about George’s appearance negatively in one way or another, and I do agree this is true but I wondered what other people thought.

I think this happens a bit more in the first couple of books, which are the ones I’ve read the least recently making my memory a bit fuzzy.

I don’t have any real salient points to say on this topic (yet), but here’s some stuff maybe to get us started:

Lucy is an unreliable narrator in general. It doesn’t make anything bad she says acceptable, but it’s something to consider because we are seeing absolutely everything from a subjective point of view

We know Lucy has low self esteem and body image/insecurities which I guess projects onto how she views others too

I think there’s value in the contrast between Lucy judging people on appearances and then George completely not seeing outward appearances which we start to see more of later on

Please let’s all be calm and respectful if you do have anything to add! We can all learn from each other :)

I think she could have meant it one of two ways

1. It could have just been said in a joking manner

2. She did want to intentionally hurt Lucy cause she’s still upset with her for leaving them. And she’s upset because despite the fact that Holly herself has been trying to help George and Lockwood nothing has worked. Meanwhile Lucy did hurt them and she comes back and they help her without a 2nd thought

It’s just an opinion. Everyone has them and just because you criticize something or prefer it over something else doesn’t mean that the other is bad. I vastly prefer the show to the books. But I still love the books.

I think THB Holly is a stuck up pretentious bitch and I will always think that

The difference between me at twelve and me now btw is solely that if I had read Lockwood and co at twelve I would have disliked Holly whereas reading Lockwood and co at this age I can fully understand that Holly didn't do anything wrong particularly and most of the issues with her stem from the unreliable narration and frankly internalised misogyny, and THEN I disliked her anyway.

Lockwood would have gone right back to treating Lucy like dirt in no time. She had to leave and he should have suffered more considering how awful he was in THB. He got off way too easy

Okay, I've always related to Lucy with everything but in one thing she's so much better than me, I would join Kipps in the Hollow boy so fast like Lockwood's audacity in that book... I can't even... I mean I do understand him as a character but like... You're making me feel useless, I'll make you feel useless too AND devasted AND jealous

Also ... It hurts me to ask, but how long would Lockwood take to go back to normal if Lucy stayed?

THB Lockwood is so awful. He is the worst. I prefer all of the antagonists combined to him. That is how horrible and disgusting I think he is in THB. I mean i get why he’s like that, but I still hate him in THB
