now that lockwood & co's trending again (ish) i just wanna say that that book series was my gay awakening. not in an "omg women are kinda hot" way (although holly was and still is the loml) but in an "omg everyone in this series is stone-cold gay". lockwood and lucy? the bisexual disaster couple. george and kipps? bitchy gays. flo and holly? fem4butch lesbians. the only straight one is the skull, and even he's on thin ice.

I’m Genuinely Confused By This/Bad Writing
This confuses me because this doesn’t seem like something that Holly would say. In the events of The Hollow Boy. Yes I do think she would say it because I think that despite the fact that she’s extremely insecure and jealous of Lucy.
But I’m The Creeping Shadow. When both of these girls are trying to build a friendship and actually see each other. With the added context that Lucy has just been attacked. I don’t think she would say this and if I’m being honest it seems like bad writing
I don’t want anybody saying that book Lucy is ugly or unconventionally pretty. She’s pretty. She’s just insecure (I’ve got personal issues with her not liking the way she looks)
Lockwood: Yes do I believe he fell in love with her based on who she is as a person. Absolutely. Do I I think he likes the way she looks? Yes yes I do. The skull says that Lockwood is always talking about her hips. He says that she looks delightful before going to the Fittes Ball. He offers to take her through a couple of fencing moves and quite literally adjusts her stance by gripping her waist. This is a teenage boy that likes her appearance.
Holly: Despite the fact that Holly does insult Lucy by calling her ugly. I don’t think she means it. Holly does say that when she saw La Belle Dame Sans Merci it looked just like Lucy. I think that if we would have gotten The Hollow Boy in her POV it would have been a lot of inner monologuing about how jealous she is of Lucy, but also how she thinks that she’s so pretty. “Lucy was wearing this disgusting gray pajamas today. Of course she looked amazing in them, doesn’t even have to try. She can just walk in and look incredible with her beautiful golden brown hair and intense blue eyes and amazing hips.”
Harold Mailer: That character from TCS who worked for the furnaces. I always read him having a thing for Lucy
Tufnell: The client, from TEG who quite literally says that Lucy is pleasing to the eye
The UK Covers: That’s a pretty girl on those covers. Not in an unconventional way but in a “oh she’s so pretty” way
She’s a pretty girl. This scene makes no sense

Holly Headcanon
Holly comes from an emotionally abusive household.
This rest of this post is going to be marked as a spoiler even though some of it is non canon, but it’s going to relate to things that are canon in the books. Also this is really long, but I had a lot of thoughts on it
1. ||We don’t know much about her economic or class status but we can assume that it is an upper class due to the foods she eats and her clothing (Not saying that those with a lower class can’t be that, but it’s a lot easier to have nicer clothes and be able to eat healthier foods with a richer class status). So because of this we can assume that unlike Lockwood and Lucy she was similar to George in the sense that she chose to be an agent||
2. ||So Little Holly dreamed of being an agent and having this great talent. And with luck she ends up having some talent. It’s not a lot though, it’s enough to get her to be an agent but not enough to get her to be one of the greats like she had dreamed||
3. ||Her parents were very unsupportive and emotionally abusive. Perfection was the only thing she was allowed to be. Anything less than that was unacceptable. Her parents excepted her to look perfect and only eat healthy foods. Every time she had something bad it was met with, “Now are you sure you want to eat that?” Every single time she messed up the response was always something along the lines of “You’re stupid, you can’t do anything right, no one will ever love you” just warm loving words to here from your family||
4. ||So obviously they aren’t supportive of her being an agent. Constantly telling her that she doesn’t have enough talent and what’s the point she’ll never be good enough. But somehow she gets a job at Rotwells and she gets out on a team as a field agent. Her parents still telling her that she should quit, she’s not good enough, she’s not good enough for anything, she never has been, she never will be. But she sticks with it. Wanting to prove herself. Her team dies||
5. ||Instead of being there for her. They blame her for their deaths. Saying that if she was actually a good agent they wouldn’t have died. She stops being a field agent and gets an assistant job for Rotwell himself. Once again her parents are telling her that she can’t do it. She’s not good enough. She leaves Rotwells and her parents tell her that it was bound to happen. She’s a stupid girl who can’t do anything right||
6. ||So in turn she tries to be this perfect person who never falters. She can’t be anything less than perfect, everytime she messed up she was told that she wasn’t good enough. All she wants is to be good at something and for someone to care about her, appreciate her, and she finds it with Lockwood and George, but it’s not enough because Lucy doesn’t||
||I do think that her coming from an emotionally abusive household explains why she is mean right back to Lucy. Yes Lucy being mean and unwelcoming to her is contributing to it, but Holly is almost 20, an almost 20 year old growing up an healhty environment wouldn’t do this, they would ignore it, or try to confront the issue head on, but they wouldn’t be passive aggressive and petty. 15 and 19 are very different in terms of emotianlly maturity and 19 year olds should know better||
1. ||So I think that she’s mean right back to Lucy, because she’s frustrated that Lucy gets to be messy, lazy, stubborn, rude, etc. She can mess up and is still loved by the boys. She fits in with them, their her family. Holly doesn’t have that||
2. ||It’s a learned behavior. She observed it from her parents, and she’s experienced it||
3. ||It gives her a false sense of power. She got fired from a horrible job, lost her team, has horrible parents. Making Lucy feel bad about herself probably makes her feel good about herself, for a little bit, and then she feels bad about it, but for the reasons I listed above, she can’t stop herself from doing it||
She’s also very jealous of Lucy. Holly wants to be appreciated and she wanted to be this great agent with this amazing talent but she’s not and Lucy is powerful and is described as the perfect agent
