It's canonically stated that Lockwood doesn't like sugar in his tea. (I believe it was in the Creeping Shadow)
So I now have a firm belief that Lucy puts sugar in Lockwood’s tea whenever she's pissed at him. He might already know she's upset, so sometimes the sweet taste is not a surprise to him. But other times, when he's unaware of what she's feeling, he sips his tea and gets a surprise -oh f*ck I did something what did I do???- moment.
The amount of sugar also depends on the severity of what he did. Sometimes he doesn't even taste it, there's so little. Other times his tea is the consistency of mud.
One time in particular Lucy offered him his cup just as she always did. He took it with thanks and went to take a drink when he looked down.
There was no tea.
She handed him a cup of sugar.
Lockwood had never been more afraid in his life.

book!l&co character lineup
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
finally finished extended version of my L&Co designs, based on their book descriptions! it took months, but im happy with the results
ID of designs + thumbnail-sketch under the cut
[image ID: two digital drawings of characters from Lockwood and Co books, done in semi-realistic style, black lineart and plain colour against grey background.
image 1: from left to right there are full body drawings of George Cubbins, Anthony Lockwood and Lucy Carlyle. George is standing facing left, slouching, he's looking at the viewer with indifferent expression. he's fat, light-skinned and has medium length fair hair. George's wearing round glasses, red t-shirt, baggy jeans, unzipped grey hoodie and sneakers. he has a grey sport bag in right hand and a black messenger bag across left shoulder. next to him there's Lockwood, he's standing half turned to right, he's facing the viewer with a gentle smile. Lockwood is paler than George, almost a head taller and slim with short, slightly wavy, black hair. he's wearing a grey three piece suit with white shirt underneath, as well as smart black shoes and a purple tie. on top of it is a black greatcoat. Lockwood stands with one hand in pocket and another resting on rapier's grip. the sword is in its scabbard attached to Lockwood's belt. furthest on the right is Lucy, she's standing half turned to right, head facing left with a curious look directed at the viewer. her skin is light and her hair is warm brown, slightly uneven and spiky with middle parting. she has a wide frame and is the same height as George. Lucy's wearing a baggy orange sweater, plaid grey skirt, black leggings and tall dark-brown work boots with iron patches. she's holding onto a strap of her rucksack that is on her right shoulder. there's also a belt on top of the sweater which holds her rapier.
image 2: from left to right there are full body drawings of Flo Bones, human version of the skull, Quill Kipps and Holly Munro. Flo is standing half turned to left, facing towards the viewer with a smirk. she's light-skinned with long dirty-blonde hair, and her face has smudges of mud all over. compared to previous pictures, she's almost as tall as Lockwood, but not quite. Flo is wearing long blue puffer jacket on top of her darker clothes that resemble one of fisherman's with mudded thigh-high rainboots. she stands with one hand in jacket pocket, one raising a brim of straw hat with a knife. said hat has a fishing hook stuck on its brim and two lavender stems attached to hat band. next to her is the skull in his human form. he stands half turned to right, slouching, hands in pockets, with head thrown back with a wide smirk across his face. skull is very thin and not really tall, he is tanned and freckled with spiky dark hair. skull is wearing ill-fitting clothes: a white old-timey shirt that is slightly too big and grey trousers that are too small and short. he stands barefoot. third from the left is Quill Kipps, he stand half turned to right, crossing his arms, head facing left with a look of annoyance. Kipps is short and slim, he has ruddy and freckled skin and short ginger hair. Kipps is wearing a grey leather jacket with Fittes logo on it as well as two medals, tight black jeans and chelsea boots. his rapier scabbard has a baldric type of belt. rapier itself has green gems on a hilt. finally, there's Holly Munro, she's standing half turned to left, head facing right with a gentle smile. she's pretty tall and slim with deep rich black skin tone and black shoulder length curls. Holly's wearing a white short lantern sleeve shirt with a blue dress with a cloth belt wrapped around and tied into a bow at the back, as well as low heel shoes. she has a light-blue scarf wrapped around her head. Holly also has white small earrings and beige nail paint. all of the characters have artist’s watermark at the lower right side of them./end ID]

not to be insane about her on main but you know I never stopped thinking about jessica right. you know I never stopped thinking about jess lockwood
shes like. she's JESS.
shes haunting the narrative. she's haunting lockwood. shes haunting nothing at all, in the literal sense, which is rather strange. shes in Lucy's face and the way she stands at the door. shes got lockwoods eyes, or maybe hes got hers. she's burned into her bedset. she's burned into her house. she's burned into wood. she's a broken pot. she's a clumsy rapier. she's waiting at the apple tree. shes sleeping under her covers. she likes stickers. she's a kid, she's a guardian, she's not going to take off the baby wallpaper in her bedroom. she's clung to youth. she's forced to grow up. she's younger than her baby brother. she's the world. shes important enough to die for. she's important enough to live because of. she's blue and swollen and on the floor and dead. she's pale and smiling and holding her brother in her lap, immortalized, shoved in a dresser drawer because somebody couldnt handle seeing her face.
she's that important. she's that important.
she's a lockwood, she's a mirror, she's lucy joan carlyle and anthony john lockwood and a reminder and a child and doomed, doomed, doomed in such a way that she could save everyone else.
she's the boxes lockwood couldn't open. she's the right time. she's warm feathers and stitches purposefully undone.
in her childishly wallpapered room, she is sitting, watching, cross legged on her bed.

Okay but the way the series cut out the part about Lockwood getting ghost-touched by Annabelle Ward, and low key I can’t help but wonder if maybe they were saving it for later, because oh my gosh, could you imagine the absolute freak out Lucy would have over Lockwood being ghost-touched with all the added backstory they gave her with Norrie? And could you freaking imagine a scene acted by Cameron Chapman where he’s literally DYING of ghost-touch but refuses to get help until he’s made sure Lucy is okay??

OMG Lockwood came in and started his intro wishing to give Lucy the necklace...!! And she actually cut him off cause she thought he was there about the stupid document signatures 😅
I only noticed now, but i am 100% sure it was like that.

Lockwood: Anyhow, no matter what you do life is meaningless and I daily think of the empty grave waiting for me.
Lucy:
Lockwood, jumping over his mother’s grave: Are you in the mood for Chinese food?

I just started reading the third book for Lockwood and Co and my favorite thing is the first case they are working on. Like there’s so much chaos...George manages to set Lockwood on fire and then Lucy chucks a water bottle at him to put it out and it hits him in the head and knocks him out the window. They’re more of a danger to him than the ghost at this point and it’s hilarious.

Here's a little something I drew to celebrate this momentous occasion 😊. I didn't even realize what a special day today was until I checked IG and saw the Stouds' posts and a few others celebrating. My mind immediately went into hyperdrive so not only did I draw this but also a few dozen little ghosties that I hope to transform into stickers someday soon. How did you celebrate our dear Lockwood and Co.'s birthday?

You know what's so great about Lucy leaving Lockwood & Co for a little bit?
She had literally no one. From childhood, apart from her one sister she got on well with, Lucy had nobody. Not a single person.
When she started out as an agent, that was a chance to connect with other people and maybe find her place in the world. What happened instead? Her team died and her supervisor blamed their deaths on her.
So her leaving her family to go to London *was* a risk, but also not really. With her talent, she was basically guaranteed some sort of job (last resort being part of the Night Guard), so it wasn't a huge financial risk. Nor was it a social risk--again, note that Lucy had literally nobody. No friends, no close family. (I hear show lucy was different but unfortunately I am a book-elitist so.)
The point is, when she was hired by Lockwood, she didn't just get a job, she got family. She got George and Lockwood. She got two people who understood to a significant extent what it's like to be a kid in a world where kids are like adults in situations where there isn't a super secure family safety net to fall back on. She got companionship. She got people she could wake up in the middle of the night, people she could depend on, people she could share meals with. People she could share her life with and who shared their lives with her, too.
And then she leaves.
And do you know how much it takes leaving somewhere you've put down roots? To leave people you've grown close to? To leave somewhere that's so safe? A place of comfort and familiarity and security?
It's hard. It's really hard.
But she did it.
Maybe her reasons for doing so weren't the most sound. But she did it. She had the guts to leave and survive and carve out a place in the world for herself. Sure a life without Lockwood and George was kinda miserable, but she made it work.
And I respect her so much for that.

Underrated detail in the L&Co books is they have sources in the high security store room and because of that it’s quite cold so they put food in there, which is so funny to me. It’s like warming your tea on a nuclear reactor. 😂
