i just can't believe that oda fucking create sanji, a stereotypical ladies man who simps to an embarrassing degree for women while having his hackles comically raised around everyone he perceives as a man - and most notably butting heads with the more obvious ~manly man~ of the crew. haha, classic anime running gag, the kind that gets obnoxious at times but still makes you laugh.
AND THEN, like a billion chapters later, motherfucker steeples his fingers and goes "soooooooo... what makes a person Like That?"
and the answer is that he grew up in fucking Toxic Masculinity, The Kingdom. the answer is that he was always Different, in a way other guys instinctively perceived as weak, and that made him the target of visceral scorn and violence. the answer is that he was sensitive, sweet, caring, nurturing - feminine-coded traits which are only valued by patriarchy insofar that they're performed by women in service of men. the answer is that in a kingdom comprised almost entirely by violent men, the only ones who were ever kind to him, the only safety he ever had, were a girl and a woman.
so cooking is for women and servants, it makes you less of a man. only women will ever really value you for your passions and dreams. women are also actively hurt by the way the world works, they are unsafe unless they comply with men's violence, and you have to protect them.
(men will always know what you are, and they will hurt you if you let them.)
and even after he leaves... at baratie he is cherished and respected, but even that is an extremely masculine environment. we don't talk about our feelings, we don't let our guard down, the only love is tough love. when he tries to express his artistry and express himself through his cooking, rather than just filling orders and making money, he gets mocked.
so here is a man who will not raise a hand to a woman, because he rejects the masculinity he was raised with and refuses to become yet another man subjecting women to violence. he is desperate for women's attention and affection because it's SAFE, it's the only kind he can trust. other men are potential threats and must be treated as such. he must at all times be snarky, tough, Not Feminine, because to be perceived otherwise is to be powerless, to be hurt.
like y'all. the queer coding of it all? the overtly feminist themes? the active rejection of toxic masculinity and the way it's shown to be directly tied to imperialism? what the fuck.

I don't see many people talk about Zoro being absolutely soft with Sanji once they get together. Like sure, they still argue and spar, etc, but Zoro is a protective and devotional person. The moment they start dating, he treats Sanji like they've been married for 40 years.
He might be gay af and consider tradition a detriment, thinking about Kuina here, but he still grew up in a traditional village and likes to do all the things he saw husbands do for their wives growing up.
He picks up flowers for the kitchen, he takes care of Sanji's knives, he carefully folds his clothes when he's on laundry duty, he uses cute nicknames when no one can hear them, he bathes and puts on cologne when they have a date...
Of course, Sanji, the man in love with love, would be shocked when he first realizes Zoro is an absolute sap and has many internal conflicts about it because he's not used to love himself but Zoro is so stubborn about it he's forced to learn to like it.

Thinking about how much the strawhats need Usopp.
His place on the team has always been weird and uncertain for him. He's a sniper but also he's an inventor and he fixes the ship but the thing he gets known for is mostly the long nose and the lying. He calls himself a great captain but he's not the captain and in fact he has very little decision-making power and even less actual confidence. He's the most cowardly. Or maybe he's the bravest. He's pretty sure they only keep him around because he helped them get a ship. He'd die for them anyway.
But the strawhats don't really need a sniper, or a liar, or a guy who gave them a ship. They need Usopp. And the reason has nothing to do with whatever his official role on the crew may be.
They need Usopp because they need a (goodhearted, clever, brave, talented, but nonetheless) regular guy. It's actually so important for the strawhats to have someone who knows what it's like to be weak, who has to really grapple with the consequences of every fight and crazy adventure, who has some semblance of being average and practical about things.
Nami shares some of this role of not being impossibly strong and unkillable the way the others are, but even she has solid close combat techniques and has random bursts of crazy where she'll do things like stab a 3 inch wide spike through her foot to win a fight and help Vivi. She's just pretending to be normal. You can see the glint in her eyes and know she's actually insane.
Also, Usopp is like. Actually nice to people. Regularly. He wants to avoid conflict. They desperately need at least one crew member who wants to avoid conflict. Nami does not serve this purpose quite like Usopp does, either. Sure, she doesn't want to get into fights willy-nilly and she'll often run instead, but she has a harsh and prickly personality that doesn't exactly set people at ease. Chopper also avoids fights but that's mostly for medical reasons and he has very little problem getting into them if he thinks it's necessary. Sanji is kind to people, but he's only nice to women, and will start fights with very little prompting. Luffy is friendly but completely tactless, Zoro doesn't even try to be sociable, and Robin thinks murder is a little funny. So again, between all these weirdos, they need a guy who's just like. Hey what if we said good morning like normal people. What if when some stranger is mildly rude and has a lot of weapons we just ignore it. What if we like. Got along with people. That would be neat.
Anyway I don't have a big grand finish for this post but just. The strawhats were genuinely in need of Some Guy, and Usopp solves that problem even though he thinks he's not special enough. Of course he's unique and talented and strong, but he's still an average human with average physical strength and slowly hard-earned skills. The strawhats without that have no tether.

Zoro and sanji as duo are special because they don’t act that way with another else.
Sanji prides himself on having manners, He isn’t needlessly rude. He plays the role of sensible and kind cook anywhere else. Zoro doesn’t engage in petty fights, he has deeply ingrates discipline. He plays the role of dependable and stout swordsman.
But they fight each other like cats and dogs, sanji disregards all manners and zoro lets go of his honor-based discipline— JUST SO THEY CAN FIGHT.
Zoro doesn’t let disrespect slide, but sanji can insult him everyday with out major consequences.
that’s why their dynamic is so good, and why almost any zosan interpretation works. They act their age together!!! They’re 21 year olds, they act as stupid as they really are. Best friends, pseudo brothers, husbands, pinning losers— it all works!! I love zosan!!!

something about franky being usually the first (or the only) hyper-masculine man bawling his eyes out openly being vulnerable after hearing the tragic history of the island the crew is in (fishman, dressrosa, zou). something about franky self-proclaiming as a pervert and yet he's the most gentlemanly out of all of them by never objectifying women (even if for a gag). something about franky being the total embodiment of non-toxic masculinity and this man should be praised more.

Sick TO DEATH of fan content maternalizing Nami's relationship with the other Strawhats. I know people see her as "nagging" but she really just gets mad when she gets scared, she tells them off for putting them in dangerous situations not out of Motherly Concern And Condescension but out of fear for herself.
I mean really her arc with them is THE OPPOSITE. She finally gets to stop worrying and goof off.
Tumblr media
I mean, even her outbursts are an expression of her lack of real worry. You never saw her doing anything like that when she was in Coco Village with the Arlong Pirates, because she was forced to put on a brave face. Not to mention cater to the egos of the powerful men around her.
Now she gets to make a fuss. She gets to be loud and silly and rowdy. She gets to be mean and un-witholding with her opinions. She acts grumpy too but she loves the goofiness of the other Strawhats, she loves laughing and joking with them.
So often I see her put into this role of the Mean Smart Woman Who's Above Them but that's such a disservice to her multifaceted character and relationships. She's having fun!!! Portray that!!!
