4/28 - 4/29/2024

In my last update I wrote "I'll probably just crumble into dust" and while that was not actually the plan it was a completely accurate premonition. For posterity (and because I'm still sitting in this airport at demise o'clock, utterly incapable of doing anything I actually need to do), documentation of various memorable stages of dustmaking:

Stealing half an hour in late March to write about seven actual words because most of it was just sitting with the concept mentally, but it was such an indulgent wondrous slice of time. And then I deleted it all because it doesn't actually belong, but it was still an INCREDIBLY EXCELLENT TIMEEEEEE

Not thinking about Bleach or fanfic at all because there was no mental space available to it

Feeling great despair because the idea of remembering what Bleach was seemed like a lot of work, to say nothing of *having to reread my own fanfic to remember what that was*

Going to a conference which, inasmuch as it was Extremely Full of Conference, was single-track enough--in the sense that all I needed to think about was Conference, as opposed to "other people and all their problems"--that it was very easy and pleasant to Bleach LARP things.

Standing in a TSA line for so long I did, in fact, have plenty of time to start mentally drafting dialogue for three chapters from where I chronologically am in this fic, and then writing it out while taxiing on the runway! 🎉🎉

In exciting news (to me, I know Tumblr does not care whether I live or die), I do not have another major deadline until May 15. If I'm being realistic it's probably going to take that amount of time to catch up with all the regular work stuff and life stuff that's been deprioritized in favor of Big Deadlines, but I think I want to try building back my writing habit starting next week. We'll see how this week goes before I decide whether "next week" means "next Monday" or "next Saturday."

I am also eight billions years behind on fanfic I am reading and Other Posts. I wish that were something I felt capable of doing now, since I still have two hours to kill, having only killed one so far, but if it's not a rambling and inconsequential bulleted list I cannae

A Collection of Joe Shinigami Who Definitely Exist

It is currently some godforsaken hour in ORD and my connecting flight does not leave for another three hours, I've crossed into the twilight zone, and I only feel mentally and physically capable of two things: composing a ranking of every airport I have ever been to, or listing "actual people I've experienced in the last 36 hours that would make for excellent Joe Shinigami."

I don't think the airport ranking would be that interesting, because most airports are "idk? 2/5 due to their being an airport," so:

Joe Shinigami who has, over the centuries, composed a definitive ranking of senkaimon he has experienced, despite the fact that aside from the gate facade they all open into very literally the exact same liminal space (but is liminal space ever the same? oOoOoO)

Married Couple Joe Shinigami who operate two identically named tea shops on two parallel streets separated by only a couple of blocks, and routinely call each other and send customers between the two, creating their own strange parallel universe/temporal-spatial wormhole in the Seireitei's commercial district

Joe Shinigami standing on an urban doorstep describing supernatural encounters to each other, until one affects a comic sitcom voice and says "but it's nothin' compared to comin' home to the missus!" (I feel like these are probably bottom-ranked 4th Division goons that Unohana has sent off on "fieldwork" in the vein of Af-san.)

Joe Shinigami who has comprehensive knowledge of all the points multipliers and Gold/Silver/Platinum/secret Titanium membership clubs that comprise the complicated world of the Gotei's Hollow bounty system. (Seriously, I had dinner the other night with a guy who had comprehensive knowledge for American credit card and hotel rewards programs. It sounded like Pokemon and he talked, with a straight face, about working his way toward lifetime Platinum status with some hotel chain because "all you needed to do" was spend 500 nights in one of their hotel properties over the course of X years, without falling below a certain threshold Y annually or failing to re-up in consecutive years. It sounded like gacha for hotels.)

Joe Shinigami who runs a tea shop and partners with farmers in whatever Rukongai's equivalent of Taiwan is (in my version of Rukongai, I guess this is somewhere in East Rukongai, but not the part of it that either line of the East Rukongai Soul Train runs through). She refers to both tea masters and Gotei captains/VCs as "weird creatures" and has strong opinions about Rukongai farmers' cooking, specifically because if you don't like the dish one night and there are leftovers, they just serve the same thing the next night--literally the same thing, and they don't believe in refrigeration out there, so it's taken on a flavor. But this matters substantially more to a shinigami than it does to a soul in bumfuck Rukongai, because only one of these entities needs to eat it.

This is getting away from Joe Shinigami profiles, but re: Taiwanese Tea Joe Shinigami, the way she talked about tea reminded me very much of how I think some people would talk about reiatsu, and I feel like Reiatsu Appreciation Class at the Academy takes the form of the instructor having a selection of upperclassmen assistants wrap/infuse their reiatsu into cups of water, because pairing it with the water makes it easier to externalize/conceptualize and ultimately practice evaluating and eventually manipulating, in terms of reiryoku/reiatsu fluid dynamics, and in terms of the ways reiatsu (like tea) can change the experiential properties of the water, making it feel more "slippery," or dry, or move differently in the mouth, etc.

I know you care deeply about pivotal scenes in Bleach where characters are not wearing shoes, so when I was looking up something in the very first chapter, I thought of you immediately when I realized that during Rukia and Ichigo’s fateful first meeting, Ichigo is wearing these cute little stripey numbers (personally, I would have colored them red):

“Of course he is!” one might say, “he’s indoors!” BUT it’s what comes next that’s important—the action moves outdoors, but our boy doesn’t have time to pull on his sneaks when there are sisters to save!

I am already in love with the fact that Kubo has been doing Sock Fights since literally day one, but I also love the implication that this, the moment of truth, the scene that sets off the rest of the entire story and will be featured in every flashback montage from now until eternity…

To start; Bleach was the first show I'd chosen to watch on my own, and i watched it completely blind. Like, i didn't even know what anime was blind. I'd kill to go back and rewatch it the way I did at 10 lmfao

I guess to me the 3rd is like a childhood "time capsule" in the way that they helped me organize and place memories/feelings from those times. I started art, writing, cosplay, and fandom as a whole because of them.

I think I was drawn to them because I wanted someone to 'fix' me. They were 'scary' and 'rejects' like me. Headstrong and disciplined. They're still a source of comfort, my strength in adversity. The Third's ideals and sacrifices have stuck to me and guided me through life - as crazy as it sounds. They were the older figures I never had; cared when no one else knew how....

XDD The dutiful Mr. Queue has managing the shop here for several months, as we have also not been able to be around, and I'm sure he's reblogged many excellent things. And one day soon we will actually write any posts, too. This week I've been looking at Tumblr-in-March, though, and am very excited to have nearly made it to April! (We will politely ignore the fact that the calendar has nearly made it to May.)

Oh no, we don't actually know anything about anything listed in this post. 😂 Which, thinking about it, is kind of impressive. But we don't know what Shinji sounds like in English or what any of these characters sound like in any language! This post made us think long and hard about the terrifying degree to which we do not know anything about Sonic (and his personality, plot, etc.).
