i kinda slayed with this one actually

one day i will finish the set maybe even update the art

my issue that i ran into was that on paper the lans fit the cloud village aesthetic but i have issues with assigning them to the village when the culture was very much an attempt at integrating black culture into the show which makes me a bit ehhh about assigning the famously pale rich people to but the setting definitely fits the best no doubt

i also considered mist but their main thing was being controlled by a terrorist organization and their culture seems heavily based on a caste system which i don’t know if that fits with the lan sect if anything that’s more jin sect’s thing which i also am considering assigning them mist

i know none of this is that deep but still anywayyyyyy

Mdzs: Naruto Au

This is probably the second most nerdy thing I’ve ever drawn but I had so much fun with it-

Also I spent a lot of considering this as I drew sooooo:

The Jiangs- byakugan

Wwx- originally a normal leaf shinobi before becoming apart of the Anbu

The Wens- sand village

Wen Ning- reanimated corpse bc ofc he is

Wen Qing: medical nin

The Nies: stone village

Nhs- bc he and nmj are half brothers his mother was an uchiha but no one knew that bc his sharingan didn’t awaken till his brothers death and even then he rarely uses it so no one is aware of it (really my friend and I just thought it would be super funny to give him the most op power and bc nhs is himself he literally wouldn’t use it besides like cheating on tests)

another dumb hc we devised was that the reason mo in this universe wears makeup is bc he saw wen ning’s makeup and assumed that wwx’s followers all wore makeup….. when in reality wen ning’s makeup is just something cultural to the sand village

Designs details:

- the jiangs all have their little bells from their og designs

- yanli was most inspired by ino and tenten

-i let jc keep his whip so he’d probably be a lightening type ninja

-wwx’s anbu mask is a rabbit bc obviously but i made the markings look like crescents moons to make reference to the way rabbits and the moon are linked in Chinese folklore

-wen ning’s kimono is folded left over right to represent that he’s dead and i considered dressing in white to further push the dead theme but in naruto canon they dress in black for the modern funerals so i opted to keep wen ning’s og color scheme

-wen ning’s make up is inspired by kankuro’s and i took inspiration from temari for wen qing

-in general it seems kishimoto gives ppl of the sand village more cultural elements to their designs so i leaned into that when designing the wen siblings

-nmj’s headband is inspired by jiraiya’s and originally i wanted to dress him in full armor resembling madara’s but what can i say i’m lazy… ig think of this outfit as his casual wear

-i also kept a solitary braid in nmj’s hair bc i enjoy the idea that braids are significant to the nie’s

-for nhs i took heavy inspiration from sai….nhs wears a single armor plate bc his elder brother insists he has to wear some form of armor so he compromises and uses it as a crop top

-i included a modest outfit as well which he likely wears around his brother or for more formal events

-i gave nhs piercings in both his ears and face and lemme tell u the hunting i had to do to make sure pain wasn’t the only character with face piercings… i wanted to give him a bridge piercing but i wanted to also stay canon, however i now can confirm konan has a lip piercing soooooooo

neji’s whole story is so…. fucked up and the show brushes over it so quickly like you’d think it would be a bigger plot point but they sorta are just like “this is why he’s mad” then he has one conversation and he’s not mad anymore?? and then he’s not important again till he dies

look, I want a Meng Shi Lives AU for many reasons, but at least partially because I think if NMJ met her it would... not necessarily solve things, but I just feel like he'd struggle to hate JGY with the same veracity once he sees firsthand how much he loves his mum. and if NMJ showed Meng Shi even the tiniest ounce of respect and or basic kindness, or if Meng Shi happens to think he's a Very Nice Young Man, then...... JGY can't very well kill someone his mum likes, can he???

Watching Bojack and being ace and not liking Todd that much is quite an experience.

I really liked Bojack, I thought the writing was great and this definitely includes Todd. He’s some of the best ace representation in television.

But here’s the thing; the humor in Bojack…. I don’t like it. Not because it’s bad, I just don’t find it funny. To me it ranged from mildly entertaining to downright annoying. I remember sitting through the last season and hating the bit between the two journalists and the dawning horror of realizing it was gonna be a multi-episode bit. And the thing about Todd is that he was usually the front-liner for the show’s comedy alongside Mr. Peanutbutter. So yah he wasn’t my favorite. I loved his arc and the real moments he got to have. But the thing is… his ace experience doesn’t match mine at all.

This of course doesn’t make him bad at all. People on the acespec or just people in general are going to have different experiences. I didn’t get to have the sort of connection some of my peers did but that’s okay. Todd acted as a lot of people’s first exposure to aceness as a concept, which no matter what is super cool. My real issue is how people treat me when I say I didn’t relate to his journey.

I have a friend who had been telling me to watch Bojack for years. She watches once a year (the masochist) and she knows I’m a sucker for good writing about complex issues. So I watched it on her recommendation despite not loving the first few episodes. And yknow what yah I did really like it. I could go on and on about Bojack and Diane and Princess Caroline, but everyone already has so I won’t. Anyway, after I finished I came back to her and because she knows I’m ace she (in good faith) asked about how I felt about Todd, to which I answered honestly. She was genuinely shocked. At first she also took it as criticism of the show, but she couldn’t wrap her head around me being ace and not relating to him. Which really irked me.

Tons of people in the queer community complain about how media and culture in general act as if there’s a single narrative for what being gay or lesbian or trans is supposed to look like, yet the same queer people turn around and can’t fathom that an ace person might also have varied experiences. Not every ace person is sex repulsed and it’s especially laughable to me that it’s assumed that aceness only has one “mode,” when—unlike most other sexualities— the spectrum is always the core part of the discussion around asexuality. I’m not mad at my friend for not knowing this, it’s just frustrating.

Sometimes I read back my own posts that I remember feeling like I was giving a hot take as I was typing it out, but as I reread it i’m like no actually this was just basic “I consumed the source material and understood what I was being shown.”

Someone said in the tags of one of my recent posts that they were surprised ppl were saying Stede was a good father and it’s like… yah you should be surprised bc it shouldn’t be a hot take that something explicitly in canon is canon?? That’s just one example but I see it all the time. Just bc the character never turned to make direct eye contact with the camera to state that they were in the wrong doesn’t make them not in the wrong??? And it all goes back to people’s deep-seated need for their favs to be the most morally upstanding citizen of all time bc “what does that say about me if they’re not?”

I have no solutions I just get annoyed.
