I always took the term ‘skin’ very literal when thinking about applying it to art and sculptures. I had never considered the different ways these ‘skins’ can make a piece feel. Had I been given these canoes and asked to create a skin for them I would have only followed the form. I would have never considered having something erupt from them. I really enjoy looking at pieces like this because they make me re-consider how I would approach situations.

Re-imagine
In our last class, we were introduced to a new project. We were asked to re-create an object with either a new texture, or some other aspect that would completely change how the object is viewed. We were shown a few examples to get our minds working, and one stuck out to me over the others.
Tumblr media
This piece by Meret Oppenheim is the one that stuck out. In this image, it is clear that the typically expected smooth, porcelain of the teacup has been replaced with an eerily real set of fur. I love how unsettling this piece is. Most people eat meat, something that, when alive, is covered in fur. When we place fur, or feathers, in the context where it would be consumed, or aid in the consumption of our food it becomes extremely disgusting. While tea has nothing to do with meat consumption or the use of furs, I believe this image guides the viewers mind to consider the discomfort that comes from the misuse of something so commonly seen.

Sculpture inspiration
At one point at the beginning of the school year, we made sculptures based on found objects. In a different course of mine, we were asked to re-create a master artists work. I chose to re-create a painting by Jack Shadbolt. When I look at this painting it is easy to imagine it as a found object sculpture, with its wonderful colours and it’s odd shapes mixed with the biological structures. Maybe at some point I can turn this lovely piece into a sculpture.

Plaster hand cast in paper
We got to experiment in class with paper casting, we could cast any object we wanted. I chose to cast another cast of my hand to get this almost ghost-like appearance. This experiment has lead to a few other ideas for casting sculptures, while I may not be able to use paper as it takes a long time to set, I am excited for the possibilities of re-visiting this idea.

My sculpture piece for the Light and Sound project. While I think this is a good start, I wish to re-work some aspects of it.

Weekly inspiration
Recently in one of our sculpture classes we were given a lesson on paper casting. I had the idea of taking a plaster cast of my hand and then casting it with paper, removing the plaster at the end. The result was a lovely, almost ghost like, cast of my hand. I think it would be very interesting to try and cast a full figure. Different artists use casting in incredibly varying ways and I love to see their results.

Feeling very proud of myself for cutting and sanding these boards to the necessary angle (mostly) by myself for a project I recently finished. They created a great triangle structure for an installation project that involved both light and sound aspects. It was a challenging project, but our entire class did amazing. I personally hope to re work some aspects of my piece after receiving some great constructive criticism. Once I am completely satisfied I will post a photo of the completed structure.

Decisions
Looking to create a sphere made up of sections shaped like orange slices. The plan is to have them open almost like they have advertised in the “Chocolate Orange” ads. Now to pick a material.

Weekly inspiration
While trying to work on my ever changing sculpture project, I’ve been trying to think how I could incorporate light. Since it is a necessary aspect of the assignment I cannot just leave it, and I don’t want to do just an ordinary spotlight. I looked up strobe lighting to see if it was something possible to use for my assignment. Now that I am completely in love I guess I will have to find a strobe light and something to spin my object on. Here is the video that inspired me. Caution: it can be nauseating.

I found another video that was shown to us in class one day. This sound installation by Janet Cardiff has multiple speakers, all of them projecting one person’s voice in a choir. You can stand in the middle of the room and listen to them all, or walk around to hear the individual singer. Video here: https://youtu.be/ncWFLzVrwU4

I have recently been toying around with the idea of working with broken glass as a medium. Which may not be the best idea considering I’m clumsy. But nevertheless I decided I would look up some other artists who have, which led to me finding a video about Marta Klonowska. In this video she uses shards of glass to re-create the animals found in old masters paintings and brings them to the light. I love the idea of taking something as harsh and violent as broken glass, and using it to create something typically seen as soft and loving. Video here: https://youtu.be/j2ZqLTWJ1HI

I really liked how the glass caught the light with this deforative bowl but the adhesive did not. I would like to find a strong enough adhesive to be able to use something this opaque in my future sculpture. Here’s to hoping I can get my sculpture to remain strong and sturdy

For my weekly inspiration I started with a google search for artists who use discarded books as their medium. I came across the contemporary artist Brian Dettmer. He uses books in a variety of ways to create a wide range of different types of sculptures. Hopefully the use I have for my supplies can be nearly as interesting.

Some more sparkly goodness that resulted from a light and reflections experiment day in class. Hopefully I can use some of these reflective figures in an upcoming project.
