mike-centric; plot. this AU has so many layers that i don’t really know how to summarize them. it’s an aged-up S1 AU, but also an AU where mike lived in minnesota and didn’t meet the party until recently, but also an AU where mike went missing for a year, but also a werewolf mike AU, but ALSO AN IT CROSSOVER AU. it sounds insane and it is, but somehow it works??? anyway, u may or may not know that i am a little hashtag consumed with the need for more werewolf fics in this fandom so it’s not rlly a surprise i latched onto this one. multichapter, hasn’t updated in a while but not officially discontinued, u know the drill

I UPDATED IT!!! plot rewrite fic where will first experiences hanahaki at the snow ball, and it only goes downhill from there. if u like greek mythology (that tragic morbid shit particularly like orpheus & eurydice or hades & persephone) then congrats bc i’m gonna plagiarize the vibes and symbolism but not the narratives. it’s a bit bloody and it’s only gonna get bloodier bc i love me some tragic aesthetic gore, so mind if ur squeamish. multichapter, ongoing (for realsies like i pinkie promise-)

*pushes an ao3 link towards you* i’ve plugged this a million times, but! just a reminder that i have an active fic i’m working on, the artist and the writer, that’s only two chapters away from completion!

a normal high school au where the upside down doesn’t exist, TAATW is 12/14 chapters, and currently 22,387 words, featuring mike’s journey to recognizing what all the weird, cloudy feelings in his head really mean—and what that means for him and will’s relationship.

“Mm. Explains a lot,” Will commented, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

The gesture made something in Mike’s stomach twist, and he frowned instinctively. What the hell was that?

“What’s up? What’s with the frown?”

He shook his head, hair flipping into his eyes and sticking to the sweat on his forehead.

“Nothing! I don’t know. It’s nothing.” He cleared his throat. “Look, I don’t smell that bad-“

“Friends don’t lie!” Will called out, not even turning around as he made his way back toward the long cinder block building.

Will is leaning toward Mike, one hand on his shoulder and the other wiping his cheek.

“Mike”, he presses, “that is not what I asked.”

Well, Mike thinks, I guess this is happening right now.

“I’m glad. Really. It’s just.”

Mike takes a shuddering breath.

“I wish that it was me”

Its prequel, A bit of fooling around is all, is not byler-centric, so I didn't tec it, but this fic is readable without it.

(T, completed series, 20k) - byler soulmate au where people switch places with their soulmate for 24 hours at midnight on each of their 16th birthdays. there's one fic each from will and mike's pov as they navigate repairing their relationship and falling in love together :))

need, lie, mean, cry (T, 1/1, 1k) - my take on the s5 byler rain fight, and mike wheeler making some Very Important observations.

why you are always alone (T, 1/1, 3.1k) - basically, i do to mike wheeler what rick riordan did to nico di angelo in hoh. if you've never read pjo: vecna forces mike to out himself, and lucas is a good friend.

he's (just) my (sister's) boyfriend (T, 1/1, 9.7k) - mike arrives in lenora for spring break, and contends with his emerging hatred for will's new friend danny, and his lacking relationship with el. written pre-s4!

don't leave me here alone (don't go where i can't follow) (T, completed series, 31k) - ANOTHER soulmate au! this time, your soulmate's name appears on your wrist on your 15th birthday. canon compliant with s4, featuring lots of angst from will. part 2 happens on mike's birthday, who finds himself frantically following will into the upside down.

A Happy Ending was Imperative by @waroftheposes : Will reads Maurice and pines. I read this fic today, on the bus, and it was so good I forgot to get car-sick. Thanks to whoever recommended it on tumblr ^-^

are there still beautiful things? by @aceoflanterns : Will attends an open mic poetry night at a local cafe, invitation courtesy of one Max Mayfield. This turns out the unexpected effect of seeing one Mike Wheeler again… and maybe also sparking a conversation long overdue.

feedback loop also by @aceoflanterns : Other words begin to enter the feedback loop. The world is still a hazy thought, just a distant memory, but new things enter your mind—it’s not, it’s not my fault, it’s not my fault you don’t like girls! or, the destruction of castle byers.

and if I get burned, at least we were electrified by @blackdeathmamba : He presses his lips together and tries to figure out a subtle, non-funny way to say it, but he comes up blank. Fuck, whatever: “I almost kissed Will. Again.” A fun fic full of byler tropes!

The Pact by @starsarefire824 (JustMyName) : A pact between Max and Mike gone wrong gets them both unanimously voted out of the Party and they find themselves stuck with each other the summer after Graduation.

Mike discovers his asexuality, catastrophizes, thinks his relationship is doomed by learning the fact and despite everything his family still weighs on his mind. He deals with all of this (badly)

Just the ordeal of figuring yourself out, dealing with your family issues, all while thinking you are the worst person on earth. Hopefully he has a great support system with his friends and boyfriend.

Mike didn’t care. Maybe because he always managed, he made his own choices regardless of what his parents chose to preach and if he really was cursed with ice running through his veins, it didn’t matter because he would always love the boy across town until his very last breath and he had frozen from the inside-out.

or a cursed boy, his boyfriend, an idle town and them against the world.

The End of the World by eagle_ace

Post season 4, vaguely pre-season 5. Things fall apart, to say the least. After everything, the party's not really a party anymore. Mike wants to fix it, but he doesn't know how.

Mike's POV, lots of emotions, I tried writing in the present tense which I don't normally do. There's byler, there's an el-initiated milkvan breakup, there's the party (sans max unfortunately) being friends. Hypothetically this could take place between seasons, but I'm certain there'll be something in season 5 that makes that impossible.

“Oh.” Mike snapped his fingers, huffing out a laugh. “Oh, this is like that- that black and white movie my mom likes to put on at Christmas. The Jimmy Stewart one.” He stood a little taller, a wild look in his eyes. “Alright! I’ve learned my lesson! I can go home now, and appreciate my life, yada yada.”

Nothing happened. Mike snapped his fingers again, more urgently, before raising his voice in a yell.

“Lesson learned! I wanna go home!”

The world stayed as it was, broken and decayed, and Mike screamed into the cold, stale air.

Or: After a bad fight with his friends, Mike wakes up in an alternate reality that seems to be plunged into an apocalyptic nightmare.

“Everything's going to be fine, please don't freak out.” Nancy starts to say, which causes Will’s eyes to widen.

“That’s…not really reassuring, you know that right?”

Nancy huffs a laugh, “Yeah, it isn’t, sorry.” He hears shifting through the receiver, and he thinks maybe that's all she's planned to say.

“Mike’s in the hospital.”

Will sucks in an involuntary breath, letting the air back out, shaky. He nods repetitively, a little numb as he tries to process, before realizing Nancy can’t see him.

“Okay.” He aims for level but his voice cracks mid-way. He’s almost whispering, “Is- he okay?”

Mike's in the hospital, which kickstarts a drive to Boston and a worried Will as he thinks about Mike, the past, and love, all while conveniently held up by New York traffic.

Will knew the stages of Mike’s breakdowns. First came the silence, then the welling tears. They would stay there, perched on the edge of his eyelids until he began to talk, and then they would make their enviable path down Mike’s face. The tears would increase as his words trickled off, and eventually he would break into gasping sobs, unable to speak, unable to do anything but cry.

Or, Will tries to rip the bandaid off. Mike breaks down. They figure it out in the end.
