"I'm so bad at art." Actually you're doing well, because you've reached the first step in thinking critically about what you've created. Don't get angry cos it ain't perfect - work out how you can make it better to your eye! Maybe that means watching YouTube videos, reading books, and looking critically at other people's work... In class we're literally told to copy out other people's designs, to experiment with the techniques they've used. Learn the words, give yourself the tools to see all the elements of your work and how you can change them deliberately. It's pretty rare you'll be satisfied with something first try, so instead of dismissing it, work out why. I know it's hard. And I too have given up on many occasions, which brings us to point two. Everyone has different strengths. In school my drama teacher would say she was terrible at drawing, but could she act? Yeah. Could she sing insanely well? Yup. So is she 'bad at art' because her type of art is not using pencil and paper? Of course not! But she found the thing she enjoys and so that's what she does. I knit, I sew... I like formulaeic things, and feeling the material in my hands. As a kid, messing around with origami was how I unwound. I find comfort in being precise. On the other hand, that is the very thing my sister hates, but she's amazing at illustrating, at pulling images from her mind and drawing them down. Everyone's got their own thing; maybe you just haven't found yours yet. To me, art is what you make it. Art is for everyone. And maybe it's not your thing, and that's ok too. But don't ever let anyone - including yourself - say "you can't do art". Cos you can, maybe you just need to change the way you think about it. Art isn't just what's up in galleries, or on the covers of magazines. It's radical resitance, an expression of yourself, a thing that binds people across generations, oceans, through hardship together. Art is you.
