also i do think that the pervasive idea where "canon doesn't bother to respect itself, why should i respect canon" wrt comics is like. hm. the idea that the many different iterations of characters due to a variety of writers seeing them a variety different ways isn't a bonus actually....the variety means there are many different ways and opportunities for a character to vibe with you in a certain story or under a writer. rather than decry it all as useless because it's so inconsistent therefore you can do whatever you want because the characters don't matter, there is probably *more* opportunity than most within comics as a medium to find a characterization thay works for you. but in order to do so, you do have to interact with the canon to find it. because there's a difference between personal interpretation of characterization and just making stuff up.

In every universe, in every dimension, Dick is always forced to do things that he doesn't want to do.

He has to become a team leader not once, but twice, despite non wanting to (YJ). He has to give up Robin, a title his own mother gave him. He has to wear the cowl during Bruce's absence. He has to watch Bruce resuscitate the Joker. He has to fire Tim - for his own good, but knowing that he's inevitably going to hurt his brother. Not to mention, the whole Spyral arc, or Tarantula.

bruce WAS going to kill the joker. in a moment of weakness he was about to abandon everything he believed in if it meant jason would be avenged. a Big Part of batman's character is that he doesn't believe in vengeance!! he was willing to ignore one of his core beliefs just for jason! but it was his respect for jason's memory what held him back (no i don't believe in the stupid "joker has international inmunity and clark stopped bruce from killing him" thing or whatever that makes no sense at all and isn't Canon in my mind).

only that jason comes back and is so so angry that bruce didn't avenge him! he is so disappointed and he feels that bruce hasn't ever truly loved him. because he isn't the same jason from before! he doesn't trust in redemption anymore, he wants to handle things a different way. he is soso frustrated because from his viewpoint his death hasn't changed anything and bruce is still using the same shitty morals that don't get anyone anywhere.

and now bruce, who has been consumed by grief for the last ~4 years finds that the love he held for jason has become the main source for his misery. jason came back and he's different and he hates his dad and now bruce has to mourn his son all over again

and that's the tragedy lol bruce loves a past version of jason very deeply and doesn't really like that he came back Like This. he feels guilty about how his son turned out. he considers jason to be his biggest failure, the one time he spectacularly failed at Everything. in my opinion his attempts to rehabilitate jason or whatever stem from wanting to relieve his own conscience rather than from wanting to actually help him (this is why i kinda like gotham war lmao don't kill me). the love they had for each other has now rotted away forever ☺️

if you think too much about how it was bruce's love for a past version of jason what ended up driving them apart and turning his son into an angry and lonely person you'll start to feel yourself going insane

what is very annoying about the vast majority of batfam fans is the very surface level approach they take towards calling out racism in dc canon and fandom. yes, you want damian to be brown in the comics but do you care about how his mother’s character was butchered due to post 9/11 anti-arab racism? yes, you want cass and duke to be featured more prominently in comics but would you be okay with them displacing your own faves in order to do so? do you even read the comics they ARE featured in, or are you content with just reblogging their one panel cameos from your fave’s solos, extolling how much you “love” them (so long as they are second fiddle, that is)? you want jason or dick (whichever you prefer) to co-parent lian, all the while sidelining jade - you are content relegating jade and talia and shado and shiva to a joking “assassin moms” punchline when you talk about their kids while not realising the implications of their race and how it plays into their portrayal by dc.

you can’t just reblog a vague post about colouring damian correctly and wanting representation and then uncritically reblog another post about how evil his mother is - you’re playing into the exact same racism you claim to denounce, while feeling like you’re being so very progressive while doing it. it’s not like i’m expressing a particularly novel sentiment either, and i’m aware i probably sound like a broken record right now but it’s just so irritating
