This was a new menu item so I was excited to try it. It was not good. I had imagined that the patty would be stuffed with gooey cheese. But it was just a cheeseburger sans buns in appearance. But it couldn't even pull off a bunless cheeseburger in taste. That "cheese" can't even qualify to be fake cheese. I had no idea what it was. It was like a flavorless sheet of rubber. It didn't even melt.

I recently finally learned what "nanban" means. It literally means "southern barbarian."

Here's some etymology. In ancient China, the Chinese grouped non-ethnic Chinese people outside of China into Northern Barbarians, Western, etc. Japan was grouped into the Eastern Barbarians. The Southern Barbarians referred to SE Asians. Japan also adopted that term and it eventually evolved to mean Europeans, Westerners.

So, in context, chicken nanban means "chicken European-style." The word nanban is long obsolete, but it still has some remnants in certain words like chicken nanban.
