A general cane guide for writers and artists (from a cane user, writer, and artist!)
Disclaimer: Though I have been using a cane for 6 years, I am not a doctor, nor am I by any means an expert. This guide is true to my experience, but there are as many ways to use a cane as there are cane users!
This guide will not include: White canes for blindness, crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs as I have no personal experience with these.
This is meant to be a general guide to get you started and avoid some common mishaps/misconceptions in your writing, but you absolutely should continue to do your own research outside of this guide!
This is NOT a medical resource!!! And never tell a real person you think they're using a cane wrong!
Tumblr media
The biggest recurring problem I've seen is using the cane on the wrong side. The cane goes on the opposite side of the pain! If your character has even-sided pain or needs it for balance/weakness, then use the cane in the non-dominant hand to keep the dominant hand free. Some cane users also switch sides to give their arm a rest!
A cane takes about 20% of your weight off the opposite leg. It should fit within your natural gait and become something of an extension of your body. If you need more weight off than 20%, then crutches, a walker, or a wheelchair is needed.
Putting more pressure on the cane, using it on the wrong side, or having it at the wrong height can make it less effective, and can cause long term damage to your body from improper pressure and posture. (Hugh Laurie genuinely hurt his body from years of using a cane wrong on House!)
(some people elect to use a cane wrong for their personal situation despite this, everyone is different!)
Tumblr media
(an animated GIF of a cane matching the natural walking gait. It turns red when pressure is placed on it.)
When going up and down stairs, there is an ideal standard: You want to use the handrail and the cane at the same time, or prioritize the handrail if it's only on one side. When going up stairs you lead with your good leg and follow with the cane and hurt leg together. When going down stairs you lead with the cane and the bad leg and follow with the good leg!
Realistically though, many people don't move out of the way for cane users to access the railing, many stairs don't have railings, and many are wet, rusty, or generally not ideal to grip.
In these cases, if you have a friend nearby, holding on to them is a good idea. Or, take it one step at a time carefully if you're alone.
Now we come to a very common mistake I see... Using fashion canes for medical use!
Tumblr media
(These are 4 broad shapes, but there is INCREDIBLE variation in cane handles. Research heavily what will be best for your character's specific needs!)
The handle is the contact point for all the weight you're putting on your cane, and that pressure is being put onto your hand, wrist, and shoulder. So the shape is very important for long term use!
Knob handles (and very decorative handles) are not used for medical use for this reason. It adds extra stress to the body and can damage your hand to put constant pressure onto these painful shapes.
The weight of a cane is also incredibly important, as a heavier cane will cause wear on your body much faster. When you're using it all day, it gets heavy fast! If your character struggles with weakness, then they won't want a heavy cane if they can help it!
This is also part of why sword canes aren't usually very viable for medical use (along with them usually being knob handles) is that swords are extra weight!
However, a small knife or perhaps a retractable blade hidden within the base might be viable even for weak characters.
Tumblr media
Bases have a lot of variability as well, and the modern standard is generally adjustable bases. Adjustable canes are very handy if your character regularly changes shoe height, for instance (gotta keep the height at your hip!)
Canes help on most terrain with their standard base and structure. But for some terrain, you might want a different base, or to forego the cane entirely! This article covers it pretty well.
Many cane users decorate their canes! Stickers are incredibly common, and painting canes is relatively common as well! You'll also see people replacing the standard wrist strap with a personalized one, or even adding a small charm to the ring the strap connects to. (nothing too large, or it gets annoying as the cane is swinging around everywhere)
Tumblr media
(my canes, for reference)
If your character uses a cane full time, then they might also have multiple canes that look different aesthetically to match their outfits!
When it comes to practical things outside of the cane, you reasonably only have one hand available while it's being used. Many people will hook their cane onto their arm or let it dangle on the strap (if they have one) while using their cane arm, but it's often significantly less convenient than 2 hands. But, if you need 2 hands, then it's either setting the cane down or letting it hang!
For this reason, optimizing one handed use is ideal! Keeping bags/items on the side of your free hand helps keep your items accessible.
Tumblr media
When sitting, the cane either leans against a wall or table, goes under the chair, or hooks onto the back of the chair. (It often falls when hanging off of a chair, in my experience)
When getting up, the user will either use their cane to help them balance/support as they stand, or get up and then grab their cane. This depends on what it's being used for (balance vs pain when walking, for instance!)
That's everything I can think of for now. Thank you for reading my long-but-absolutely-not-comprehensive list of things to keep in mind when writing or drawing a cane user!
Happy disability pride month! Go forth and make more characters use canes!!!

We all got our own take to how Branch's brothers react to hearing about gis gray-phase. Here's mine in comic form
Script for those who can't read my horrible handwriting
Page 1
Poppy: Umm Branch I know you wanted to tell your bros about your grey years but what happening here?
Branch: *Siiiiiip* They’ve just reached the last stage of grief.
Poppy: The last part of what now?
Branch: Allow me to explain the-
THE 5 STAGES OF GRIEF
Page 2
The 5 stages of grief consist of:
Stage 1: Denial
Floyd: NONONONONONONO
Stage 2: Anger: You’re lying, say that you’re lying!!
Clay: YOU'RE LYIN', SAY YOU LYIN!!
Stage 3: Bargaining
Bruce: If only I had come back instead of starting my own family...-then he wouldn’t have turned gray and been so isolated
Stage 4: Depression
John-Dory: BWAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!
Page 3
Branch: And at last we got acceptance
Poppy: Wow, how long have they been like this?
Branch: About 1 hour. I give them 2 more before they try to beg for my forgiveness.

Oh I love the thought of Bruce patting Branch on the back, and Branch pulls out a shiv he has embedded under the table and threatens Bruce before realizing and going, "Oh! Just you! Don't do that again! haha!" And now the Bros are horrified that there are hidden weapons in literally every furniture item. There's a shower stake. Knives in each post of every bed. Flash bombs in the lampshades. Etc. He just seems like the type to make every furniture item with utility in mind. (I have a fic in drafts of Branch gifting Floyd a cane and the handle twists out into a knife. Floyd being touched and also scared that the blade was what showed the most craftsmanship)
But I agree. I'm dying for his brothers to see that Branchs capable leadership skills in distressing times don't go away... Ever. He's always like that. For John to see, for all his survival experience, that Branch is more capable and defensive than him. Realizing that John may have acclimated to the wilds, Branch lived and BREATHED it; and still does though he's better at the whole people thing nowadays. Branch bares his teeth when he feels scared or threatened, always on alert, could wake with a pin dropping. Bruce seeing how high-strung Branch is, and making him do nothing and try to relax for once only to notice Branch is fidgeting more than ever and looking around for something to do. Feeling like he's wasting precious time sitting here when he could be preparing. After all, a true survivalist never sits with idle hands. Every second is a blessing that you're alive, and wasted time can equal starvation. For someone laid back like Bruce? Would be a punch to the face. Clay and learning the more... Unsanitary ways Branch survived. Specifically the collection of his own sweat. I feel like it would be a matter of, "He's so prepared and capable, this is amazing!" To "Oh my God. He's trying to be so prepared he's saving his own sweat just in case.". And Floyd with the paranoia wall. Just staring at it and wondering how long it took him to do that. Was it one night? Multiple? Did he ever sleep in front of it? Meticulously carving the words he felt so they were tangible? How long was he alone that he had to carve his fears onto a wall so he'd be seen, if even by himself.
I am just so desperate to see Brozone learn about Branch. They probably think, oh he was on his own! But the village was with him! It had to not have been all bad! You know, denial! They deserve the gut punch and Branch deserves to be known, he deserves to be seen and accepted. I want them to find it jarring and love him anyways.
I Hope in a third tv show we see Branch back to his more crazier self like he was in TBGO as in Trollstopia he was maybe a little too well adjusted lol.
youtube
since it'd be overall pretty cute if over the course of a third Tv show we maybe saw the Bro zone members slowly learning more and more about the more crazy version of Branch.
like imagine if in an episode we actually saw maybe JD being shown more of Branch's Bunker and his weapons and Defences maybe how on alert Branch still is after all this time.
even someone patting him on the shoulder from behind is enough to get him to freak out and attack them pulling a weapon from his hair nearly striking them with it.
and JD in keeping with his personality probably finds it pretty cool at first thinking his baby bro is some sorta baddass and not really taking it all that seriously like the other bros probably would.
like imagine this scene from Brooklyn nine nine but with Branch freaking out on JD and pulling a weapon on him after he startles him from behind.
and JD just thinking its cool how baddass his baby bro seemingly is lol.
youtube
only for something to happen later on in the episode that makes him finally see it as more serous for how it affects Branch.
given he genuinely lives in a near constant state of panic a lot of the time and thus his reactions to things are more serous from his point of view which JD wasn't able to see before.
like seeing stuff like this in a Third Tv show would be good imo seeing Branch back to his more crazier self and his brothers slowly learning more about him.
and maybe seeing him as an oddball or even just a straight up crazy person at first who makes them kinda uncomfortable for the most part but they do slowly learn to understand him and vice versa.
plus Gary they gotta meet Gary and be weirded out by Branch's relationship with him before realising why he grew so attached to a Remote during all those years Hiding away. 😂😂😂😂
and of course there's other interesting dynamics to expand on more in a third show.
like Bruce and JD where maybe JD could still hold a bit of resentment over Bruce walking away from the family and never coming back unlike he did.
but he slowly comes to more of an understanding realising the negative effect he had on Bruce's self image and the stress he caused him.
and Bruce kinda understands more the pressure JD was constantly under having to mostly take care of them all.
as I kinda HC due to what we saw at the start of TBT that their Grandma was pretty passive in Raising them so JD pretty much had to do most of it and she only really stepped up when she had to for Branch after the others all left.
a Third show has so much potential I swear to god 😅😅😅😅

Branch's trauma is constantly on my mind right now. The depth of his abandonment issues and how it could be layered on top of itself.
For the longest time Branch was a character defined entirely by loss but with BroZone he's not only defined by his grief but his loneliness and guilt.
The death of Rosiepuff is so much more devastating in the context that Band Together offers. Not only was she all he had left but Floyd tasked him with taking care of her. Floyd's attempt to offer his little brother purpose only gave him more trauma to shoulder. Not to mention baby Branch had already adopted the idea that the band breaking up was his fault, what would that mean if he failed the one thing that was asked of him? He was so little when his brothers left and not much older when Rosiepuff died, he couldn't understand that it was all just a series of cruel coincidences.
Branch and how his past and his issues only get in the way of the healing process that he worked hard to start. How he's spent his entire life taking care of himself and preparing for the worst because he's sure that it's going to come, and how that means he struggles to ask for help even when he knows that he should because he doesn't need anybody. He never has before so why should he now? How it's so easy to regress into that isolationist mindset because it's easier than being vulnerable and allowing people that opportunity to either hurt him or be hurt by him again.
I have so many ideas I want to write really fleshing out how fundamentally hurt he is as a person.
