Writing advice from my uni teachers:
If your dialog feels flat, rewrite the scene pretending the characters cannot at any cost say exactly what they mean. No one says “I’m mad” but they can say it in 100 other ways.
Wrote a chapter but you dislike it? Rewrite it again from memory. That way you’re only remembering the main parts and can fill in extra details. My teacher who was a playwright literally writes every single script twice because of this.
Don’t overuse metaphors, or they lose their potency. Limit yourself.
Before you write your novel, write a page of anything from your characters POV so you can get their voice right. Do this for every main character introduced.

I wonder what Debbie and Frannie’s relationship will be like when Frannie’s a teenager. Feel like they’d have the type of mother-daughter relationship where they tell each other everything

really love dynamics that are like 'it honestly doesn't matter if you view them as romantic or platonic, the point is that they love each other. the type of love is inconsequential, all that matters is that it's there'. gotta be one of my favorite genders.

Petition to allow more female protagonists to be:
- selfish
- short-sighted
- irrational
- weak-willed
- unintelligent
- misguided
- egotistical
- untrustworthy
- superficial
- anti-heroic
- someone you wouldn't want to hang out with in real life
- someone you would want to hang out with in real life if only for the entertainment value
- realistically flawed
without these characteristics turning them the villain.
Petition to give them even stereotypically female flaws that are explained not by their gender, but by their human lack of perfection.
Petition for female characters to be allowed to be shitty without giving up their status as the hero of the story.
Petition for female characters to not have to be stronger, wiser, and smarter than their male counterparts in order to be considered a "good" character. To let them do boneheaded things. To let them hurt people when they aren't trying to. To let them hurt people when they are trying to. To let them be not naturally skilled at caretaking, motherhood, and emotional support. To let them be damaged.
Petition for heroines to be allowed to be *humans*

So Debbie is an irredeemable monster for what she did when she was an uneducated 14 year old who was being groomed? But we should have sympathy for Frank, a grown ass man who emotionally and physically abused his kids?
Cool, cool. Just admit to yourself that you hate teenage girls.

i don’t understand hating on season four debbie when that is so obviously a child. like, if her stating that she’s “only (acknowledging her youth) thirteen” wasn’t enough for y’all, there’s so many things about her that scream child, because… she was. the opening scene in 4x01 when she and fiona are getting ready and it cuts between the two of them and we see them both applying mascara. fiona does it flawlessly, debbie does it messily and practically shys away from the mascara wand. her makeup is done poorly. her fashion choices are questionable. she can’t walk in heels. she uses words like “cray”. she listens to marina and the diamonds, talks about boys with her friends, gets scared of doing anything with a boy, acts awkward and says weird shit, makes cringe art when she’s angry, giggles while she texts her “boyfriend”, she acts cool and tough and like she doesn’t need her sister, but melts and starts to cry in her sisters arms at the sight of her. and yes, all of these things adults can do and have done, but she’s CLEARLY a kid. the way that she says and does things makes it obvious… y’all think that hanging out with bad influences and being with an older guy and, well, having a chest makes you an adult, but it doesn’t. again, she uses the word ONLY before saying her age. and season four takes place in the winter while her birthday is canonically in december so she isn’t even going on fourteen she is FRESHLY thirteen. and y’all will confidently say she was in the wrong with everything that happened with matty… be fr.

rewatching shameless with my partner, and am on s6 rn. in the whole media literacy talks going on recently, people forget parallel scenes. and boy does s6 if shameless have SO many parallel scenes, especially comparing Debbie to Ian and Caleb. (And anyone who didn't see the teen pregnancy part genuinely doesn't understand the reality of low income/poverty areas, generational trauma and trauma)
if i’m being completely honest, one of the best, most fitting decisions the writers ever made for debbie was having her become a teen mother. that and having her be a lesbian. but people who admittedly tuned out after season four will tell you both of those things came out of “nowhere” (the teen pregnancy has been hinted at since the fourth episode, and the lesbianism since episode ten).

if we look at the original timeline (aka annabeth and percy being born in 1993) then 2009 was a big year for annabeth bcus not only did the battle of manhattan take place and she finally started dating percy, but also minecraft came out and i think that would be a big deal to her

Sally names Percy for the happy ending she hopes he’ll get. she spends hours researching demigods and their ends. Heracles, poisoned and given immortality as a leash. Bellerophon, revered for his deeds and killed for his hubris. Achilles, feared by all yet slain in battle. none of those would be her boy. She names him Perseus, for his successes and his long life, and she hopes it will help protect him, this name.
Percy is thirteen, recently returned from his first week at Camp, when Sally calls him by his full name. what had caused it, she can't remember. all she can remember is her strict, "Perseus Jackson––" and her son's poorly hidden, full-bodied flinch.
Sally knew––gods, she knew––that he would face hardships. she knew he would have to learn to fight, to protect himself, to kill––but that knowledge hadn't been enough to dim her hope. it was that flinch, that fear that he'd quickly cleared from his eyes at hearing his own name, that started to eat away at her hope like rot.

The mischaracterization of people from PJO is so funny, but ESPECIALLY from HOO onward like.
“Hazel’s such an innocent little angel. She’s always nice and kind and confused.”
Hazel, who’s always ready to fight in the same way Percy is? Hazel, who made it explicitly clear she probably would’ve rocked Octavian’s shit had he not been blackmailing her? Who gets so angry on behalf of the people she loves, to the point where she doesn’t forgive those who have wronged them? Who Percy described as cursing up a storm in one of their first interactions? Who’s been shown time and time again to be FAST to anger? That Hazel?
Or Nico, who’s “a misunderstood emo. A small bean. Cute like a wet cat and innocent like a bunny.”
Nico, who’s cannonically described by most characters as “scary and unnerving?” Nico, who, for a long time, is one of the angriest characters in the series? Who’s only sassy and sarcastic because it took him FOUR YEARS to mellow out? Who’s described as being one of the most powerful demigods, who a lot of people still consider the scariest? Who’s come into his own as a character from TTC to TSATS? That Nico?
Or Annabeth who’s, “cold and calculating. Doesn’t show emotion or express herself”
Annabeth, who’s the most expressive person in the series? Who cries in EVERY book in the OG series? Whether it be for Luke, or Thalia, or Percy, or Chiron, or a literal DOG? Who expresses passion like no other when it comes to architecture and her other interests? Who’s expressed compassion for people she didn’t know? People who at times posed a threat to her? Who isn’t afraid to be angry, or happy, or snide, or rude, or excited, or scared, or ecstatic? Who’s been unapologetically herself since the moment the series started? That’s who doesn’t show emotion? That’s Annabeth?

Mickey deserved an arc like Richie’s in the bear. where he finds a job/hobby (tattooing maybe) he enjoys and gets really good at it and people believe in him and they tell him he’s really good and so he starts to believe in himself
