“I guess it would depend on the time period, but pretty dreadful, yeah. I agree, a minute would definitely be the cut of mark.”

“I know! Oz is sort of a dreadful place isn’t it? Like I don’t think I’d last a minute before I went crazy. “

The brunette’s emerald eyes which had, after her question, diverted to the floor, moved back up to search his face as his voice filled the silence around them. It was a library, surely this should have been the place she was safest from this conversation. Still, his voice, uncertain and soft as it often was, captivated her -- regardless of everything, it still had that power. Crystal wasn’t sure she liked that quite as much as she might have in the past. Actually, she was sure she didn’t; it made things harder, just like it was making taking her eyes off of him hard at that moment. He wasn’t wrong though, things were intense and anyone with a set of eyes could have seen that. Things had always been intense, but since the spell and with hunters -- her included -- using this as a way to be rid of a problem, they had grown more intense. But, it was necessary, that much she'd convinced herself of since her mother’s death. So, would things get better? Probably not for him, for werewolves and vampires. Or maybe they would and things would go south for the witches and the hunters. Who knew? Still, Crystal nodded in agreement, regardless of whether she believed it to be the case or not. She had nothing else to say.
His question rang through the air and her gaze was allowed to move to her books -- away from him. “Something like that,” it was research, something that would help her out when hunting -- information that improved understanding, though she had been doing that a lot. They were supposed to help, but they never did. Whenever she was reading these books, whenever she was out there hunting, all she could see was her mother’s face -- her mother and the wolf that took her down. It was a case of holding onto the past, to the pain, but when you’re confronted with something so brutal, could you ever let it go? Still, she had to keep reading, keep trying. “And extra reading.” The reading that could actually take her mind to another world and captivate her. The reading that could actually, for a while at least, put her mind at ease. She’d always known a good book had that ability, but she’d never relied on it as much before. Her gaze met his again and for whatever reason, she asked another question. “What are you doing?” Perhaps a part of her wanted to hold onto the conversation for as long as possible, perhaps that part was winning out over the part that didn’t want to be around him. It was difficult to just throw memories away, to not feel the ache in her chest when she saw him, or now, when she was around him. Too difficult.

Her hand rested on the cover of one of the books on the floor, stopped in motion when her gaze had taken in the blonde. They hadn’t spoken since she’d distanced herself from him after her mother’s death. Of course, she hadn’t been actively seeking to speak to anyone, but it was more than that. She had been actively seeking to not speak with him, to not see him. She still didn’t like the concept. However, here they were now and it seemed unavoidable. She should have just grabbed the books and left -- she didn’t need to stick around in the library, it wasn’t essential. Her body didn’t seem to like that idea though, given the fact that she was still very much frozen in place, disregarding her eyes that insisted on watching him as he bent down to her level to help her. She didn’t want his help. There was a time when she would have -- there was a part of her that would still call for him when she was in need, but that was buried far beneath the part of her that couldn’t look at him without seeing her mother’s death again. No, it wasn’t directly his fault and sure, she had looked passed what he was when she was younger -- but that was a stupid mistake. Yet she still couldn’t make herself leave. His question didn’t help her in that respect, though it did aid in her finally grabbing the book her hand had been lingering on and placing it back in her arms.
“Fine.” Should it have been odd that she could only manage that one word? Before she could have spent hours talking about anything -- she had done. That was a long time ago, though. “I’ve been fine.” Better than him, she’d imagine. Of course she wouldn’t have added that. But, with the situation that had recently arisen, it was likely true. Before, Crystal might not have seen a need for any of it, but everything had changed. Regardless of that, a large part of her wished that Austin could have been exempt from the spell -- somehow. That was naive though, and she knew it. “And you?” She didn’t want to be having this conversation; it hurt, just like it always hurt to think about him -- or to see him. And yet, she had asked the question anyway.

Comfort In Books || Crystal & Austin
Three books piled high in her arms, Crystal tried to navigate through the library, searching for a space where she could sprawl out a little. Two of the books contained content she was itching to look over and another was just fiction -- something that she would be able to occupy herself with after looking at the other two. It wasn’t difficult to find an empty space where she could be away from prying eyes and find some time to herself and her chosen books. It shouldn’t take long to read through them either, not if she was efficient -- or at least that’s what she was hoping for. Her green orbs were fixed on the empty table, though perhaps that was not her best idea, because no sooner as she began walking to the table, she bumped into someone and two of the books fell to the floor. Immediately she ducked down, not bothering to look up before she spoke. “Sorry, I should know better than to rush to a table in here.” She looked up, meeting the person’s gaze.

“I wouldn’t say it’s an easy grade. Maybe a pointless one if you’re looking at it that way and aren’t going to bother doing anything with it. Long enough.”
Tumblr media
“Unfortunately it isn’t. Most people think that taking another language is an easy grade. See not that long.”

“Well, there’s no way you’re going to be any good at a language if you don’t at least try. A few classes in high school but that was a while ago.”

“No, but you could do with it. I’m not a fan of the nickname, either. And you were doing a good job at that, but there’s such thing as time off, and that’s something I need, whether you want to accept it or not. I’m doing both. Obviously. I know the dangers, but I also know the dangers of forcing yourself to do something you’re considerably less comfortable doing. It’s not good for the mind and it’s not good in the long run. Yes, working with your power might be a great method of coping for some people, but it’s not helping my mindset at the moment, so I’m not going to do it. And it doesn’t matter how much you try and convince me to. It’s better for me not to, at the moment. I’ve trained enough to know how to protect myself if I need to. We all know the dangers, I’m not blind to them, I just don’t feel comfortable training at the moment.”
“Never said I was here to be optimistic, curly top. I’m here to make sure you can defend yourself and that is it. As for immersing yourself in knowledge, immerse yourself in knowledge that will be helpful like controlling your power. Again I’m not here to sugarcoat shit. You of all people should know that there’s dangers out there and I would assume you would want to know how to protect yourself.”

“I’ll have to.” She nodded. “We didn’t speak much before now, so it will be nice to write to him.”
“That would be easier if he wasn’t so busy and we were granted more time online.”
He smiled at that, knowing that could be hard. “You could write him letters. Talk to him about your time once a week maybe?”

“That’s not very optimistic. Frankly, I don’t care if I never get to practice what I’m studying, it’s not the future prospects I’m worried about, it’s the learning itself that I want to immerse myself in. You’d think a teacher would appreciate that. Next time I’ll make sure there’s a disclaimer. I appreciate the help, but I don’t appreciate the judgemental attitude that’s coming with it now.”
Tumblr media
“So you rather waste your talent working in the library and studying something that you will never be able to practice because you’re never getting out? I wish you had told me that before I took the time to train with you. There are people that actually want to nurture their power to become better and not waste their talent or put it on the back burner.”
