Before College for Me
Before I entered college I attended a program through my school district that was aimed at students between 18-21 years of age who had completed four years of high school, but who were not ready to go onward in life. In this program there were classes that one is expected to attend such as cooking, where basic cooking skills are gained; financial management, where you learn to keep a bank account and budgeting skills; social skills, where you learn how to properly interact with others; job training, where there are teachers who help you get and hold a job; and much more. If this sounds like a program that you or your student may benefit from you should ask your home school if there is such a program.

The Struggle
People who have disabilities know they will inevitably face harder times ahead than those who do not have disabilities. I try to put on a face that I am capable of doing many things and most people will believe it. I have professors who feel I can do anything I put my mind to. They see the outcomes. They see my work quality. They see how much I am able of doing. What they do not see is how much harder I must work to do the same as everyone else, how much longer it takes, and how much more stress I undergo to get those results. This is not unique to my situation, anyone with disabilities will have to work much harder and undergo unique challenges. This is why I hope to provide some resources to make college education easier for those who have disabilities.
I have years of experience getting the help that might make it easier for someone else. I have been to public and private schools. I have been to schools that have a great program for people with disabilities and I have been to schools where you start to question if there is even any help for those with disabilities. Through all this experience I have learned what it is like to have help and have no help. I have learned of resources outside of school that can help you manage all the unique struggles you may be facing. Through this blog I want to share my experience, share resources, share stories, and share what schools are willing to do to help people succeed. The one thing I hope you walk away from this blog saying is, “I never knew that was possible,” or, “I didn’t know that was available.” If I can help you learn just a little bit of what is available I have done my job.
