SHHH…APES
First conceived as an attempt to combine the captivating, soundtracky atmosphere of Portishead and Massive Attack with the intimate minimalism of Low, the debut EP from Shhh…Apes! contains all the beauty and weight that implies. However, on the five songs which make up ‘The Shape Of Apes To Come’, this Cardiff sextet have hit on a sound that’s highly personalised and evades simple pigeonholes.
Mark Foley, the founding member of Shhh…Apes!, is one of the busiest people in Welsh music. As well as playing in several bands since the mid-00s (among others: Vito, Strange News From Another Star, Martin Carr’s post-Boo Radleys project Bravecaptain and The Secret Show, with Matt Davies of Funeral For A Friend), he runs a rehearsal/recording studio called Musicbox and does the odd bit of globetrotting as a tour manager to boot. This schedule partly explains why Shhh…Apes! has existed as a concept for five years, but has only kicked into gear in 2013.

HEAVY PETTING ZOO
Since their secret formation in a GSCE history presentation, Swansea band Heavy Petting Zoo – vocals (Amy Zachariah) guitar (Ben Rodway) bass (Joe Rees) drums (Billy Horwood) and Jon (only one name necessary, think Cher or Sting…) – have fast become one of the most entertaining and intriguing bands; imagine The Cramps dogging with Siouxsie Sioux.
After recording and releasing a variety of strange lo-fi recordings championed by the likes of Adam Walton (BBC Wales), the group have finally released their first ‘official’ single Broken Bone. Recorded by Charlie Francis (Future of the Left) at Music Box Studios. The B-side Hunger was previously released in demo form and drew comparisons to the likes of a Tarantino soundtrack, the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, and a more aggressive Savages.
As anyone who has witnessed the band’s frenzied shows will testify, their reputation precedes them, even leading Huw Stephens to recommend them to their local MP after their storming set at Swn festival. The band are known live for the inclusion of a dancer – Jon. His outlandish moves at the front, and often off the stage, provide a unique spectacle which often bewilders audiences – unsure whether he’s part of the act or not, to which the band are still unsure…

WICKET
"Wicket flow. They’ll bear you along in their eddies of sound, sweep you to vistas new, if you’re prepared to jump in." - Adam Walton, BBC Radio Wales
"Their finely crafted melodies, basslines and intricate beats often begin gently, caressing your eardrums then building in intensity & complexity to a crashing climax only to return you safely from whence you came." - Altview Music
