what sucks for me abt science fiction/fantasy is that alot of the stories that interest me are fem-lead and as a trans guy ive been wanting to read more stuff with a guy main character, its even harder to find anything decent with gay main characters too
I'm sorry to say what I'm working on won't be of much help to you, I have queer characters out the ass but for book 1 almost none of the named characters are men, and of the ..... three of them currently (there will be more), one's a short term support character (may only appear in a single scene) and the other two are late game major antagonists.
There are proportionally a lot more men in book 2 but literally every named character except for two of them (the lesbian protagonists) would be considered antagonists or minor characters.
I've been wanting to add more male characters if for no other reason than there's already like 5 reasons no publisher will want to touch this if I don't put SOME men in there somewhere, but the main cast are DEFINITELY predominantly queer women.
Book 1 currently has at least 10 or 11 named women (all queer except MAYBE one), 3 named men (1 probably gay), and 1-3 named characters who are genderqueer in some way.
Book 2 has 3 named women (one never appears), 2 named men, and a bunch of currently unnamed men.

i will like forever stand by the fact that self-insert art is good and helpful honestly. call it cringe or whtever but at the end of the day you need to realize that drawing yourself or writing yourself into your favorite media that makes you happy can be incredibly healing. there is seriously nothing wrong with wanting to experience a bit of a reality in which u live a life that is with your favorite character ever even if its "weird" cuz honestly who the fuck cares. make urself happy. let yourself have that singular pleasure of imagining yourself with someone or something that brings you comfort outside of this world that is not nearly as kind

last chance to evacuate
as you may know, israel has begun its ground operation in rafah. they dropped leaflets last night ordering people to evacuate, and bombing in east rafah has already begun.
The border is about to become unreachable.
Tumblr media
Rafah is trapped.
We have literal hours until no-one, all the GoFundMe's you've scrolled past, all the people desperately begging on TikTok, will be able to escape.
Give now. Give whatever you can.
I am fundraising for the Odeh family, which is only 3k away from meeting its goal.
Tumblr media
you will not get another chance.

there's more things considered to be part of it than I thought (because I disagree) but the extreme majority of science fantasy as a genre fits into a few basic categories:
just regular science fiction with one or two kooky elements added. almost always space-heavy settings with something that could be considered magic/supernatural (Dune, Warhammer, Star Wars, Mass Effect, etc) or no magic and JUST aliens that are in some way biologically unrealistic, like the Alien and Predator franchises. this is the OVERWHELMINGLY dominant category.
pretty normal looking "modernish" (sometimes near-future) real-world setting but with one thing that's Weird about it. lots of "First Contact" stories like Arrival (whose alien language lets them experience time differently), or on the less realistic end of this category, kaiju/monster settings like Pacific Rim or the Godzilla franchise. Most superhero stuff falls into this category too.
ANYTHING involving time travel, which almost never has any major fantasy elements besides that (stuff like Back to the Future and Doctor Who, though you could make a strong case for Doctor Who belonging to the first category)
a lot of things that are actually just Speculative Fiction, especially "futuristic" depictions of artificial intelligence where AI is the only bit of science that far surpasses reality (Ex Machina). lots of AI and robots and some "realistic" space travel stuff.
a very specific kind of twist on a "realistic" setting, usually a "what if" kind of setting like Planet of the Apes. arguably this is also speculative fiction. often an Alternate Universe but for real life.
every once in a while a rare gem that actually leans into the FANTASY of science fantasy and does something REALLY weird with it like Annihilation. LOTS of the "new weird" genre fits into this category. Control would be in this group.
Overall the "science fantasy" genre desperately suffers from a very consistent problem: it's all just science fiction.
ALL of it seems to get sorted into the "science fantasy" category by accident. It's all just science fiction with SOMETHING about it that's JUST WEIRD ENOUGH that we can't pretend the future could look like that, and we slide it just a little bit to the left because it has one pinky toe that overlaps with fantasy.
It's SO HARD to find science fantasy that enters that genre from the OTHER DIRECTION.
I don't want Science Fantasy But Unrealistic, I want HIGH FANTASY WITH SCIENCE.
Space is to science fiction what Medieval European is to fantasy. Please for fuck's sake can we branch out a LITTLE? I'm so bored with "science fiction" meaning "space" and "fantasy" meaning "western Europe plus dragons".
Give me magic-powered tech and people who study arcana like it's a branch of physics. Give me alchemy and potions as branches of chemistry. Give me spells and rituals that can use matter, including the caster or their soul, as fuel like a runaway nuclear reaction. Give me protection runes and arcane focuses like neutron rods that keep the unfathomable, raw energy of creation from digesting you like the wet sack of proteins and carbohydrates you are.
Don't just give me science fantasy. Give me FANTASY SCIENCE.
I desperately want a robust Science Fantasy genre that isn't just the "miscellaneous" and "too weird" offshoots that just barely don't fit in with the regular Science Fiction.
Literally the single closest thing I can think of to the genre I'm looking for is Magic The Gathering. And I can't binge watch a card game.
I CAN'T be the first person to want stories like this, there has to be SOMETHING out there. Is it just all books? Because if so I need to learn how to find the ones that would interest me and start reading.
The main things on my reading list at the moment are The Locked Tomb (which technically IS science fantasy because Necromancy is a magic that they treat like a science) and the Grishaverse (i.e. the books Shadow and Bone were based on, which is probably solidly fantasy, but at least its setting isn't inspired by the usual European castles and wizards).
science fantasy is such a hard genre to be into because there's so little content and literally all of it sucks so bad
