I was so naïve to think,
surely,
all who looked upon me
would see
this prison --
but most first see
the gold,
and none first see the cage --
I was never a lover of things,
all shiny, pretty, and new --
I am not some pet
to be ogled:
I have no tricks
for you
to be entertained,
A home,
so pretty.
you've built
for me --
And when
one day,
you forget,
to lock that gilded door --
And if this
pretty birds wings
haven't forgotten
how to fly --
I'll take to the fucking sky --
For nothing with wings
wants shiny bars
and gawking eyes,
I want to soar, high,
where others may never see --
where I can be me
Just for the sake,
of having wings,
and being free --

Melancholy
It’s the worst feeling in the world
because it’s silent
You could hear the pin drops in your mind.
An isolated street after a midnight rain can’t compare,
A somber silence as one’s left to grieve what they never had.
The rain becomes a lonesome community for your pleasure,
silent and never one to judge–we cry all night long, they say.
Someone traces stick figures in the sand hoping for a friend to animate
Her name is Melancholy and she promises to kiss your tears away.
It means to scream but you can’t even hear yourself
Everything has made oneself deaf, an oral tunnel vision.
It’s branches and vines snake up your body and choke out a hollow sob
Oh love, you can’t hear yourself?
That’s just Melancholy, your best friend
She may never speak, so why should you?
